In Starcraft II, Prime was formed in the early days of the beta as a Clan filled with ex-War3 Pros. The beginning line-up and founding members included GerrardPrime, current coach of the PRIME Team, longtime GSL contenders MakaPrime and CheckPrime, and DayFlyPrime who was considered the best Orc player until Zacard. Throughout the early beta, Prime , along with oGs, was one of the premier Korean Clans.

Prime was officially established as a Professional Team on October 13th, 2010. During the GSL Season One Open, 14/64 players who qualified were members of Prime. The first season of the GSL , albeit unrefined and unpolished, proved that Prime was filled with talent. Strong performances in the RO8 by Maka and Check, with stunning upsets by PoltPrime and LotzePrime, who knocked out oGsMC and IdrA respectively. During this time, Prime was considered to be the only challenger to oGs for the status of the best team.

"During the GSL Open Season One, Artosis said that he had talked to the Spunky, the coach of oGs, and was told that everyone should watch out for Jang Min-Chul (oGsMC). Polt then proceeded to demolish MC in a one sided 2-0 series. "

One of the most surprising stories of the 2010 Sony Ericsson GSL Open Season Two was the run of Lee Jung Hoon "BoxeR", a member of Prime. Being a former Brood War Pro under the alias Clare[Shield], Boxer's mechanics established him a position at the top of the Korean Ladder. MarineKingPrime , his current alias, showed the first true display of Marine Micro in a GSL game, using only Marines to fight off the Zergling/Baneling/Muta force of KyrixZenith , which was unheard of at the time. Lee Jung Hoon tore through his bracket and pushed Nestea to a 7th game in the Finals. (Which is the only time someone has ever taken a game off Nestea in a GSL Final).

GSL Open Season 3 , we saw the consistency of Prime in the later rounds, with 2/8 Players in the RO8 being Prime, and HongUn making it to the semifinals of the tournament. While oGsMC may have won a title, HongUnPrime won the hearts of many with the first usage of Carriers in the GSL.

With the 3rd season ending, the GSL ranking points accumulated from all three opens by the players were added up and the top 32 players were seeded into Code S. Prime had 6 players seeded into Code S. The only team surpassing them in number was oGs at the time.

The 2011 Sony Ericsson Global Starleague January started off with Prime losing 5 of their 6 seeded players in the RO32, being sent into the Up/Down Matches. MarineKingPrime , also known as MKP, was the lone member of Prime still left after the Round of 32. The rounds progressed and MKP held strong, going 2-0 in the Ro16, beating NaDa in some of the most exhilarating base-trade TvTs 3-0, and winning over Jinro 3-1. This season established MarineKingPrime as the perennial 2nd Place Finisher, being compared to YellOw of BroodWar Fame, and being the successor to the Kong Line. (Started by Yellow, members of this line would be known for their 2nd place finishes). IMMvp decisively won the finals against MKP 4-0.

The 2011 Intel GSL Code S March started, and both MKP and Polt fell and do not advance further than the RO32 in this tournament. However, longtime GSL Players Hongun, Check, and Anypro proceed to advance into the Round of 16 of the tournament. The consistency of Prime's Protoss lineup is shown as Hongun reaches the round of 8 and Anypro reaches the round of 4. (Out of the 9 GSL Seasons, 6 Seasons have had a Prime Protoss advance to atleast the round of 8)

As May came along and summer began, the LG Cinema 3D GSL began in full force. Stunning upsets that included finalists RainbOw, MarineKingPrime, and oGsMC getting sent into the Up/Down Matches. Prime unfortunately had a subpar showing during this season, with only Anypro advancing out of group stages to fall in the RO16.

Leader of the Autobots

Starting late May, the GSL Super Tournament was announced. Boasting the largest prize pool to date of any GSL, it is one of the most important Seasons that have been played so far. 64 of the top ranked GSL players played during the span of one month in order to have a chance to win 100,000,000 Won. (92,000~ USD). Seven Prime Members were seeded into the brackets. Anypro, Creator, and Check fell in the RO64, but MKP, Maka, Polt, and Hongun surged onward through the bracket. Hongun fell 0-2 to Revival, but was avenged by fellow teammate MKP in the RO16 with a 2-1 victory. Maka proceeded to play Polt in a friendly teamkill where Maka encouraged Polt to advance further.

In their Round of 8 matches, both MarineKingPrime and Polt demolished their opponents 3-0 in some of the most one sided series to date. Many people predicted that the Prime Terrans would hit each other in the finals. Polt beating TOP in a 3-2 series, however MKP fell to MMA in a 2-3 series where he was reverse-sweeped. As disappointing as it was, Prime was not to be denied another championship. Polt won 4-0 in what Artosis has stated to be "Probably the most one-sided finals to date". Polt then changed his name to OptimusPrime due to his victory in one of the most stacked GSL tournaments that has ever happened.

Continuing Prime's Protoss Legacy

2011 GSL July began, 4 members of Prime began their Code S matches. However, what would a GSL Group Stage be without upsets? MarineKingPrime placed last in his group and was knocked down to Code A. Optimus/Polt and HongUn proceeded to the RO16. While Polt fell to Bomber, Hongun was predicted to falter and was not even expected to get out of Group Stages. Even his mentality, and his wrist pains, Hongun did not think that he would do well himself. Going against MC with a 0% PvP winrate, the future of Hongun's run looked bleak. However, the community was shocked as Hongun dismantled MC 3-1 and made it to the round of 4.

One of the most popular additions to the GSL was the GSTL. The Team League was first started in Feburary, where 8 teams competed in a quick 3 day league at first. Prime unfortunately had never won a teamgame until months later, even though sporting a extremely strong lineup.

While they've been slow to getting their momentum, their latest match versus SlayerS, Prime rallied behind their Protoss Ace Hongun and newly transfered player Terious in order to take their first GSTL victory ever.

Player Spotlight : MarineKingPrime

The beginning of Marine Micro

Lee Jung Hoon , also known as MarineKingPrime/FoxeR/BoxeR/CutestTerranPrime , started his progaming career in Brood War. Under the team MBC Game Heroes, he was a B-Teamer who was known as Claire[Shield]. He would often give replays to Foreigners of Korean Players he played against on iCCup. Many people first saw him as a GSL Open Season 2 player named BoxeR. Foreign and Korean fans alike were angry and confused at why someone would try to impersonate the legendary Lim-Yo Hwan. His first series against BabyWerra was a sloppy , unrefined series where MKP had tried some nuke play.

He was slated to play against FruitDealer, the best zerg and current GSL champion at the time, where he was predicted to completely get dismantled. A no-name imposter versus the GSL champion? Easily FruitDealer's win.. right? MKP would then proceed to roll over FruitDealer with a Stim Marine/Marauder timing that showed one of the first cases of stutter step micro and marine splitting.

MarineKingPrime would gain his name and a following in his RO8 match against KyrixZenith. Using only Marines, he proceeded to counter a Roach/Ling/Baneling force , which at the time was unheard of. Showing brilliant marine spreading and control, fans around the world looked in awe as Terran play evolved with just one game.

Going against Nestea in the finals, barely losing 3-4 to him. MarineKingPrime was the only person to ever take a game off Nestea in both any GSL finals and in that season aswell. This would be his first step into joining the Kong Line, almost an initiation. Lose a close series by one game, be forever known as King of Silvers later.

MarineKing would prove to be a contender for any GSL Code S Championship. Taking the RO8 after his breakout season, taking 2nd place the season after against IMMvp, and an overall impressive record throughout the early months of this year. MarineKing established himself as one of the top Koreans.

In the GSL World Championships , that included foreigners from around the world, MKP would then reach the finals again. Where he lost in a 2-4 series to IMMvp again. Yet again, MKP would take home another silver trophy.

While recently, MKP has fallen out of Code S and is currently fighting for a spot in the Up/Down matches. His play has looked less and less dominant, no one can deny how he has influenced Starcraft II. His micro intensive bio playstyle has always been exciting to watch. Marine Splitting, a resurgence in Marine/SCV allins, and even stutterstepping can be attributed to his play in the GSL.

While he may not have won a championship, he has won the hearts of many.

The GSL will continue as the most popular tournament in Starcraft II, with each passing season being better and better. Prime has been one of the most consistent and long-lasting Teams in Korea. With players like Polt, Maka, MarineKing, and Hongun, Prime has proven itself as one of the premier teams in Korea and a contender for any season of the GSL.

Prime has always stayed up there, but never won a GSTL. Feel they are a bit like oGs with great players and a lot of Code S material but their teampicks aren't always the strongest.

Anyhow, great writeup!

i like the writeup and i love MKP !!
But i belive some of your facts might be wrong as iam pretty sure that the Prime.clan already existed in WC3 (they played in NGL W3CL) and they merged with World Elite for SCII.

I see. I edited to beginning to put in that Prime as a clan in SC2 was formed from ex pros. Not like.. being newly formed just from SC2.

no. there's no Prime team in wc3 scene. It's an exclusive SC2 team, formed by three super oldschool day-one wc3 pros aka Gerrard.werra , Check and DayFly. I believe the tag "Prime" came from the name of a prestigious wc3 tournament way back then called MBC Prime League.
