If this topic belongs in another board please move it there.
I tried watching GSL in Korean today. And I realized that unlike the Brood War days where "AAHH PLAYGUUUU" and "AAHH CARRIER!" were plentiful, there are plenty of units in SC2 whose unit names are completely different from their English names. And even using Google, it's pretty hard to figure out the unit/abilities names in other languages (believe me, I've tried).
I already knew that "Buul Gome" (phonetic) = "Fire Bear" (translated) = "Marauder", but It took me a good long while to figure out that "Sa-shin" (phonetic) = Reaper. Wasn't able to figure out what Hellion meant at all, but did hear "Jii yoke buul" (phonetic) = "Hell Fire" (translated) = Infernal Pre-Igniter (that's an awesome name BTW, much better than Pre-Igniter).
So I was hoping that there could be an effort to add the the names of units and abilities in other languages to Liquidpedia. Not only to help people who view matches in other languages, but because it's just kind of interesting/cool to know what the unit names and abilities are and mean in other languages. An example of how it could be set up on Liquidpedia would be sort of like how cards are set up in Yugioh wiki: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Summoned_Skull
Notice with the flags/language and spellings and all that? Except adding pronunciation to all the languages is what I would be aiming for. As well as what they mean, because in SC2, not all translated meanings are the same. I don't know how to code wikis and all that, especially if one were to add the all of the non-English spellings, phonetic pronunciations, and meaning translations in "spoiler tags" like I will demonstrate in this topic.
I would eventually want the things on this topic be taken over to Liquidpedia, but to get this project started, I think I'll start it off on this topic. Add spellings/translations to this topic and I'll add them to the OP, and hopefully we can get this project moving to Liquidpedia.

Marines are 'space marines' in german. LOL

The SCV sounds in the german client are horrible! I played it on german for the first days and still can't get over the bad voice over :/

Assuming this is correct, I've added it to the OP.

I just want to know if fungal is pronounced FUNGUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. That way we can still have epic korean screaming like in BW where they screamed PLAGUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU. I have to say I still don't understand why they call marauders firebears...that just doesn't make sense.

Purposeful reference to 40K? Probably not but still kind of funny since SC was kind of born as a result of the Warhammer 40k universe.

Here are some, german:
SCV = WBF Marauder = Marodeur Reaper = Rächer Tank = Belagerungspanzer (But really EVERYBODY here says "Tank") Battlecruiser = Schwerer Kreuzer PF = Planetare Festung Point Defense Drone = Verteidigungsdrohne
Probe = Sonde Zealot = Berserker Stalker = Hetzer DT = Dunkler Templer HT = Hoher Templer Observer = Beobachter Warpprism = Warpprisma Immortal = Unsterblicher Coloss = Koloss Phoenix = Phönix Void Ray = Phasengleiter Carrier = Träger Mothership = Mutterschiff Cannon = Photonenkanone
Drone = Drohne Baneling = Berstling Roach = Schabe Corrupter = Schänder Infestor = Verseucher Broodlord = Brutlord Broodling = Brütling Queen = Königin Changeling = Formling Infested Terran = Verseuchter Terraner Spinecrawler = Stachelkrabbler Sporecrawler = Sporenkrabbler
All I didnt write down, are similar to the english ones (Sorry if I forgot a unit)
I don't know how to explain the pronunciation, sorry :/ And most of the german words, are only translated from english, in the client, so nothing special. Oh and one last thing: most of the german casters won't say any german names

Either I don't understand the formatting or something isn't quite right about those. Pretty sure all the units/structures that appeared in Brood War retained their names in the Korean version, as casters still refer to them as "Es she vee", "Durone", and "Puroebu". Not to mention i don't see one "Fire Bear"/"Buul Gome" for Marauder, and I'm fairly sure the Reaper is pronounced "Sa Shin".
|
I think most people just stick with the english names of the units it seems like every languages calls a "Stalker" stalker in each language.

There're a few like that in the latin american (spanish, dunno about portuguese) client:
Reaper -> Yum-Kimil Baneling -> Uetzi
Not sure if there's any other. Anyways, we usually say "baneling" or "reaper", not the name in spanish xD

Those words mean anything in Spanish? Also, added to OP.

"Buul Gome" (phonetic)
What is that phoentically? Is it like "bull" or is it like "b yewl." Just saying that "buul" is not intuitive for me so it might not be for others either.

They don't have a translation to english, but according to Wikipedia in spanish:
Yum-Kimil: "En la mitología maya es el dios y rey de Xibalbá, el inframundo." ~ "In mayan mithology, he's the god and king of Xibalbá, the underworld".
Couldn't find anything for Uetzi though.

Like "Bull". Or "Bool", but softer.

Reaper -> Yum-Kimil Baneling -> Uetzi
I can confirm you won't find those in a spanish dictionary.
|
I don't know if I am missing something here, but the spanish ones are completely wrong, Reaper is translated as "Segador", which is quite the literal translation, Banelings are translated to "Pestelings", "Peste" would mean something like "Stench".

女妖 NuYao dubbed Athena (Chinese) Banshee 攻城坦克 GongChengTanKe (Chinese) Siege Tank 死神 Shinigami (JP) Si Shen (chinese) Reaper 巨象 JuXiang (Chinese) Colossus 水晶 shuijin (chinese) Pylon

"Yum-Kimil" and "Uetzi" are names for the latin version of the game, so spanish version (EU) don't have these names for reaper and baneling respectively.
However, "yum-kimil" and "uetzi" are names of gods of pre-Columbian cultures like the Aztec or Maya.
In my humble opinion, i hate those names anyways haha.

No, in Brood War all the units were simply their names converted to Hangul but now they're real Korean. Like SCV is literally 'construction robot' and drone is 'worker bug'. The post you quoted looks extremely incorrect, though. Whoever made that list just spent a few minutes on Google Translate. Also, even if the official name might be actual korean, the casters may call them different things in casts if that's the more common word or whatever.
