+ Show Spoiler [ -.- Yeah this might be me] +
[image loading]

I have looked on quietly with some curiosity, and eventually consternation, regarding this whole debacle (and by "this debacle" I mean the PR and commmunity response following the announcement of Slayers_Eve).

A few things were immediately clear as events unfolded:
Slayers_Eve was picked because she is a woman.
She won that tournament, and is a skilled player.
This is a good thing.
Haters are hating. In force.

I'm a very, very new member of TL. I came here fleeing gamefaqs and battle.net and other terrible forums, hearing of a real community of people who poured their souls into the game. I heard that TL was about Hard Work and Honor and Good Moderation and Good Manner and ESPORTS. I was right. If I ever thought that the other forums were acceptable, it was through some horrible obfuscation of the truth, the truth that you CAN have a forum of positively contributing members who care about the community.

I thought: Here alone is a community entirely comprised of hard-trying competitive types, of all skill levels, with open minds and hearts.

Oh, how uninformed I was. The haters really came out, for this one. Most of them made me smirk. "Oh, that guy has even fewer posts than I do," I would think, "He's not a real member of the community."

But as the hate poured on, I came to realize that this is the other face of TL. I am usually confined to the strictly-moderated Strategy Forum, in the somewhat terse Simple Questions, Simple Answers thread. Sometimes I post blogs in the lighthearted, friendly Blogs section. I suppose I was insulated from the worst of the bads (trolls, uninformed people, angry people, 8 year olds with keyboards, etc) that the mods do battle with regularly. It is due to these people that you hear so much from the TL veterans of the "old days."

A world without the flood of bads. A world without sin, if you would.

I understand, now, what once was. I'll never experience it, but I understand. And my heart weeps to know what was lost, but also fills with joy to know what is to come. TL will remain strong, as ever it has been.

Haters: If there is any honor left in you, wherever you are, lay off the hate for Jessica and Eve. They don't deserve any hate. They're good people. They're good for ESPORTS. They're good for the game. Female Gamers need a role model, and Jessica went and found someone with a lot of talent and potential and put her where she has the possibility of learning the most. This is what BoxeR wants. This is the growth of ESPORTS.

Well, that was wordy of me. Here's the main deal:
------

Haters need to stop hating.
Or, How to tell if you are a sexist.

Women are drastically underrepresented in the gamer community, and in esports in particular, for a number of reasons. Culturally, fewer girls get into gaming at a young age-- and those that get into competitive games find themselves in a hostile male-dominated environment. The number of women who play gets more and more thinned out as you get into more competitive games like Starcraft or CS:S where men are, in a word, pigs.

It doesn't take that many pigs to muck up a room, either. I was once in a CS:S game (it was on an Italy server, I think. God I hate that map) and as soon as I joined the server, I realized that one of my teammates was female. Voice Chat gave her away, since without voice chat CS:S is incredibly hard to coordinate-- every tryhard uses it. I also realized that, of the remaining 6 players on our team besides her and myself, 5 were well-behaved young men who had no problem playing beside an equally-skilled young woman. The other one was a woman-hater.

I won't reproduce here what he said. I can only say that the woman I played with is one of the bravest people I've met on the internet for continuing to play. I wasn't man enough to initiate a voteban on the harasser, but I was man enough to vote to ban him once it was started. She left after a couple of rounds, though, because we never got together enough votes to get rid of him. Another great female player moved on, out of that server.

I can't possibly imagine what it must be like to be a skilled female starcraft 2 player. When people call you a "fag" or a "pussy", and berate you, usually it's just because they're mad. What if, through some horror of horrors, you are a streamer? What if people KNOW you're female? I can't possibly imagine how bad that must be.

If you're hating on women, you're part of the problem. If you are unfriendly to, harass, or generally dislike female gamers, you're part of the problem. And nobody here really WANTS to be part of the problem, right? Wouldn't things be better if women gamed as much as men, and it wasn't such a sausage fest all the time?

Just, just stop hating. I mean, I know that "Haters gunna hate" but like cmon guys. Stop hating.

in short:
although there are legitimate criticisms to be levied for this decision, the fact of the matter is these threads are clogged by new TL members with 3-digit post counts and 2-digit IQs who are alarmingly misogynistic. Those few even-headed criticisms, accurate though they may be, are drowned in the sea of, well, poorly worded arguments.
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

Omg, I actually was in the dark about a lot of the stuff going on throughout this. I can't believe people actually sent her hate mail. Like i said in the thread asking if she was over reacting, i don't know how her doing that would make these posters stop, but if it can in korea (and it seems like it apparently can) then she should absolutely do it.

Although i must say this made me feel a little guilty as a TL member for something i didn't do

Also surprised to hear there are people with the audacity to trash boxer. I wish the best for Slayers Eve, Slayers Boxer, Slayers Jessica and the team.

Although i don't think you're over reacting jessica, i think it would do you some good to not worry too much about it. Most of the people that think boxer should retire and that a girl is unable to play in esports are mostly unreasonable as it is.

It is unfortunate that people can get away with all sorts of bad shit online just because they always retain some level of anonymity, they feel they can say/do whatever they like with no consequences, which unfortunately is the case many times. I'm glad to see you're not letting that happen here, and big props to you for writing the post

Its troublesome that some people dont realize that Eve was recruited onto the team to PROMOTE the esports female world and make it so that there would be no gender barriers separating women who want to be progamers.

Fantastic post, to take the time and effort to post that on this forum shows how much this clan and Jessica care about the scene and the foreign fans.

I am now officially a Slayers fan.

Good luck to Eve and the rest of Slayers in the future.

I understand that in Korea it is all about image (derp that is why everything in korean before adulthood and even a little bit afterwards is practically the same) I know its much harder to be an asian female than asian male as there is a huge gap there.

However this does not give the right to anyone to demand that respect be given to anyone based on their race/sex/whathaveyou. Sure its cute that Jessica jumps on the backs of everyone for putting up trollish behavious against Eve, but isn't that what we do? Isn't that what most of the internet is made up upon? Sure it sucks, but to be a try-hard "Imasavetheworld" person by stating that its wrong or improper to do so against a very good starcraft 2 player who happens to be a girl is just bogus. There is no respect gained for being female, and definitely none for ranking to masters on Korean servers or NA or any server for that matter.

To say that because she is famous on the internet and that because she lives in Korea, somehow makes it improbable or somehow "more wrong" to make fun of her, or poke fun at her, or disgrace her, or to do some troll/flame against her.
I think it is very illogical to try and save the world by mass changing trolls or to try and point your finger at them and state that "How dare you make fun of someone you don't know anonymously?" To think that this post in any sense repulses people to make fun of women in general or to stop making fun of Eve is just very narrow minded and niave. To be completely honest I see a lot more trolls coming out of the woodwork because of posts like this, than pushing the trolls away. If you want people to respect someone that you hold dear, you have to prove that they are respect worthy. Being a girl, being asian, and playing starcraft 2 professionally doesn't warrant immediate respect.

I don't understand why anyone would try and troll another human being, I think that is very foolish and pathetic. However just because its foolish, or just because its pathetic and just because so many people do it, it just means you have to deal with it. You could make as many "Please stop trolling me because I am a girl, or because I am Asian" posts as you want and there will be no less trolls out there trolling.

So you can either accept that there are trolls, let them troll and live on. Or you can try and stop trolls by constantly wasting your time posting hilarious "full of trollfodder" posts. Either way you are going to get trolled, at least one way you have your pride and time.

Oh btw I don't think that you shouldn't support your players Jessica, but I think that you have to understand that things happen in life that we can't control and getting trolled on the internet is one of those things.

I sincerely hope that the roar of the crowd cheering for BoxeR at MLG will sow how much people love and are thankful for what BoxeR did all along his career. haters are always louder on the internet, but at the end of the day you shall only remember the people putting much effort to come and see their heroe! BoxeR is the greatest of those heroes

don't give up Jessica, you got many supporters!

Now talk about confidence. SlayerS_Jessica has her heart at the right place and is a really strong woman. Huge respect from my side - I guess she's the only one that can handle the emperor? . I am really impressed of how passionate she is about her team.

SlayerS is a team full of talented players, and who knows, maybe we will see Eve at the side of MMA & co, winning tournament after tournament? She has yet to prove that she can do it, but with the SlayerS team at her side she has the best chances.

Good luck to SlayerS and their players.

Really well written!

Sad that people act the way they do when they hear a girl has been hired to the team. Who cares what league she is in? If SlayerS want to hire her then so be it. Start your own god damn team and exclude all women if you want but why the hell do people attack SlayerS because they hired Eve?

For whatever reason they have her in their team it doesn't give the right to all the "keyboard warriors" out there to hide behind their computers and act like idiots.

Good luck to Eve and SlayerS.
