I really support Jessica in her choice to add Eve to SlayerS team. As said, the progaming scene doesn't let a lot of chance to female players, and it's even more obvious considering all these bad reactions. I really don't care if she's gold or diamond, because if she has won a tournament, she has a lot of motivation and now being in such a powerful team she will improve very fast.

I personally can't take a stance regarding the legal actions she decided to peruse, because I don't know the Korean law well enough. Still, I wouldn't like to see people getting sued just for what they say - though this seems to be the course many counties around the world started taking.

As far as whether or not Eve is "worthy" for such a position - I believe the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and until she succeeds in a major tournament or two, people will keep criticizing her(and Jessica, for choosing to pick Eve for the team), and with good reason.

As far as I know, according to a Korean acquaintance of mine, they probably have her phone number and exact address by now. It's a phenomena called "the human flesh search". In fact, SlayerS might actually be receiving more physical forms of abusive action from members of the public.

Also it's too early to say how SlayerS_Eve will perform. They are looking to groom, not to buy and field. Of course, this public backlash was probably unexpected. Taking all that into consideration, I don't think they should be criticised too much for their decision to show her.

Worthiness has nothing to do with it. She is part of a team. She was chosen. If she was male, and he came out to look at some games in the GSTL, no one would've said a word. I also don't think that she should be criticised on the basis of joining a team. And no, people do not have a good reason for criticising SlayerS_Eve. It's just stupid to criticise her for coming out smiling.

- all it takes for good evil to prevail is for good men (in this case women) to do nothing -

I commend your protective actions, and know that the people who do abuse and hate, are the jealous haters that are bad for the sport anyways.

I agree that women pro-gamers in the scene will only lead to greater things for e-sports.

Always good to have visionary leaders on the scene~

If you condemn her to be unworthy for not becoming a Master in under a month, how would female players anywhere ever even attempt to make it in Starcraft?

It's like saying "we need 20% more minorities in our company, even if they are the worst applicants ever". And no, I'm not mad at the fact that she is female, I think it's a fucking joke to say "yeye, she sucks, but the others are worst". Nice PR action tho, still ridiculous.
PS: I'm diamond myself and diamond players suck in general. That's why they are in diamond.

People are not criticizing her smile - people are criticizing her definition as "Progamer".
This is not about whether or not she's female - Destiny got a lot of criticism right after it was announced he was chosen for Root Gaming. It wasn't criticism about his gender(obviously) or his personality, but rather that he hadn't won any major tournament. That criticism dwindled down once he started winning a lot of good matches(on ladder, minor tournament, getting into the IPL, etc.)

Don't get me wrong - I want to see a female progamer winning the mlg just like the next guy. Overall my point was that respect(as part of a progaming team, playing the game, not in the sense of having your photo-shopped face on pornographic images, which is just disgusting behavior) is to be earned - and the only way for her to do this is proving that she can.

I dont get why people are so upset over this. They took a girl on their team. So what? Girls stop being icky in 5-6th grade. grow up. Ok she is not has good has the guys on the team but who care, its not like she will be their ace in the gstl.. they are not idiots.

If you follow these trolls warped logic they would be 2 sc 1 team, Team Flash and Team Jaedong, everybody else are lesser player and therefore they should uninstall sc and go play pokemon, sc2 should not even be on store shelf because its a game for lesser people because it has automining.

Honestly, after hearing a TON on this whole ordeal, I feel like it's just being blown way out of proportion.

I heard all the debates on destiny's stream, all the various opinions on if it's right or not to recruit someone based on just gender, and how it's unfair to others, etc etc.. but I think everyones really just looking at this whole thing in the wrong light.

For starters, the post itself isn't really that great with giving all the details of the situation. What I could make of it tho, was that this girls being recruited not as a pro player, but more or less as a team mascot, and won't be taking up any spaces that a real pro being recruited would take up.
For example, if slayers wants to have 10 team members, then she would not count as one of those 10 members, but something else all together.

Infact, the way I saw it after thinking about the situation, was that slayers might eventually use her once she's a solid player to create a launching point for an entire female branch! Maybe even try to make female pro houses, and try to do something somewhat ground breaking over there in korea.

So yeah, her recruitment could have been a very good thing if everyone didn't get so upset about it so fast.

If this girl got the slayers tag, learned from them, and then got to show the other females of the korean community that the waters were infact safe and even rather nice, then it coulda helped the e-sports scene in korea a ton probably.
However, they think very differently over there (I have a korean friend who I play DNF with), and at times it can be a very horrible way of thinking.. but it's just who they are, and how they handle their culture.

I don't think the idea of trying to bait more females into the community is wrong tho as a whole. I do however feel that NA teams don't want or need these types of mascots. We just need to show the female community that there's alot to be offered here, and that the majority of us will refrain from being assholes to them.

I mean I can really understand why a girl would think "hmm, im awesome at SC2.. I could go pro, but screw that, I'd rather keep my sanity", simply because I was paying close attention during blizzards initial REAL ID system iterations to see what was gonna happen, and there was this huge movement of females against blizzard (forgot the name of it), with all this information on why they needed to stay hidden.
The harassment they get is often times brutal, and simply uncalled for. They can't win with it, all they can do is lose a little sanity from it and move on.

I wish I had the links to the sites and old topics about it, but apparently all the gamer girls were just gonna boycott all blizzard games if they had their real names shown once everything was said and done.

So yeah. I really wish there were alot more competitive SC2 female players out there and all, but I can understand why they wouldn't really wanna get in on it due to that stuff alone, and feel really bad that they're put in such shitty positions alot of the time. :/

I believe there was even a topic of discussion on one of the state of the games (maybe 4-5 weeks ago?) that destiny was invited to, where the girls from G4 were there, and they were talking about how it was even hard for them as just general public figures in the gaming community to deal with all the shit they keep getting.

To wrap this up tho, I know everyones upset because they have to actually work for their place in e-sports, while this girl simply got her spot handed to her because she has boobies and a moderately attractive face.. but I don't think it's right to cause all this chaos and brood all this hate over the whole thing.

Hell, I have a terminal illness (Cystic Fibrosis). I can't practice 90% of the time because im laid up in bed, so im literally stuck in diamond.. but you don't see me complaining that I havn't become some pro teams pet project! lol.

So just relax guys. Let slayers do their thing and see what happens. At the very least, it'll mix things up for a while! :>

I like that you posted detailed informatin about this here. Many people keep talking falso statements just because noone feels the need to inform the community.

I also like the idea of recruiting SlayerS_Eve for the reasons you explained above. Having female (pro)gamers can't hurt and if people get interested in your team because of her it's just fine. Also she may be able to improve quickly with so many talented players around her 24/7.

Now I just hope that Eve, you and your team get over this situation and be able to concentrate on SCII again.

Best of luck for the future

On July 22 2011 05:01 SlayerS_Jessica wrote:
Hello. I am SlayerS_Jessica.

I would like to first say that it's such a pity for SlayerS and Lim Yohwan to have had bad words directed at them just because of certain material that Mr Haeun_Cielu decided to personally post on TL.
That is why I wanted to tell you the exact context for the things that Haeun_Cielu decided to post without even saying what happened before and after them.

Firstly, as you are all aware, the incident's origin is the appearance of the player SlayerS_Eve.
Many people are brushing her off as insignificant because she is in the Gold League.
(She is Diamond)

Please, think for a minute.
It has been less than a month since Eve joined the team. She was not selected through the pro-gamer casting system, but she is someone I selected for the team to help start having female competitors in Starcraft 2, after seeing that she had sufficient potential.
That potential is shown in the fact that she was the champion of the Female League.
You might brush off the Female League as being insignificant because the players are Silvers and Golds
but in reality, it is no mean feat for a female to reach Master level while laddering against males.
It is difficult for the average male player, too.
This is like the first steps being taken by a toddler, so it's inevitable that the starting level is low.
But if she trains and receives training, I believe that she will achieve the match ability to at least give you all entertaining matches to watch.
That is why I selected her.

She was not inducted so that she would achieve incredible feats in individual leagues like the GSL.
She is here to make the game more entertaining and to show that unlike in Starcraft 1, female players can easily do well in Starcraft 2.
If you condemn her to be unworthy for not becoming a Master in under a month, how would female players anywhere ever even attempt to make it in Starcraft?
The team SlayerS is a professional team.
I believe she should be called a pro-gamer as long as she is a member of the team, because despite her skill level being that of an amateur, it would not be right for a team member to differentiate each other as "the amateur" or "the professional".
I hope that you will be able to think of her more generously and watch over her quietly so that she may be able to enjoy playing Starcraft 2.

Haeun_Cielu used twitter to put together our my tweets and those of commentator Ahn Junyoung (out of context) to imply that the commentator had criticised my decision to show Eve during GSL.
He was manipulative, driving the mob mentality for his own benefit, and used banmal [informal speech used to social equals and inferiors, never used for someone older than oneself] to ridicule me for "not being able to speak English". I thought that as an adult, I should tell a high-school girl to remember his manners, which he then called it a "keyboard battle" and then used irritating language saying things like I "had fled twitter".
Having stumbled across this, I warned him in advance, in case he made the mistake of going too far, that current Korean laws on cybercrime allow punishment for those that circulate rumors about another person, whether the rumor is true or not.
rS, and is trying to spread his story everywhere.

I have never told this person that I would sue him.

Perhaps he thinks he is being sued because he saw his tweet on a page at the top of the pile of documents prepared in relation to the legal action.

Actually, legal procedure requires that any submitted evidence must include all surrounding events or contributing incidents occurring at the time, which is why all materials must be submitted.

Haeun_Cielu, that top page you saw was the first page of results given at the time when "김가연" was searched on twitter.

If he kept tweeting it, then of course wouldn't it be inevitable that he would keep coming up on the first page?

The point is that it was just material that I had to submit as part of evidence for the surrounding environment at the time for legal action. And having seen this, Haeun_Cielu, like how a thief feels when cornered, claimed that I was suing him and that all he did was to criticize SlayerS.

And he must have believed that it was better to spread this on TL instead of trying to do it in Korea.

(He says that someone on TL independently posted his claims. I find this hard to believe.)

And with TL unaware of his actual situation or what he had actually done, he managed to create a critical atmosphere that called all of it an overreaction.

Thanks to him, I am receiving hatemail from foreigners on my twitter, too.
This saddens me.

In Korea, there are very dark consequences due to our online culture.

Many celebrities are persecuted with hateful words without reason and there are incidents such as the false controversy over Tablo's educational record at Stanford.

Because of all this, there are so many celebrities that fall victim to depression and some that choose to take their own lives.

Perhaps, due to cultural differences, it may not feel so real but for Korean society, it is such a big problem.

It is impossible to know what it feels to be persecuted online until you have been a victim.

This case is a sexual crime.

They photoshopped a young female onto a pornography actress.

They humiliated her.

They wrote profanities and sexist remarks non-stop...

There are things that they are doing that you couldn't even imagine.

I am the manager of SlayerS.
I must protect our players.

I was able to ignore hateful messages during all this time that I have been a celebrity.

After all, all it took was just me to endure it and swallow the insults.

But Eve is different.
With Eve, her parents and even those who care about her have been hurt.

The only thing she has ever done, is to have been seen on television as a member of SlayerS.

She has never done something that affected society. She has never harmed anyone either.

No longer shall I stand on the sidelines and watch the bloodless murder committed by those sending messages of hate through a messageboard that, through the misguided Korean Internet culture secures them some anonymity.

To those that call this an overreaction, I ask one question.

If someone in your family was the victim of cyberbullying, would you tell them to stop overreacting?

Persistent online bullies are not "users of the internet" but "serious cyber criminals that call for justice".

DC Inside is a place that is place where such schizophrenic hate messengers reside online.

Lim Yohwan is a man who has always walked together with e-Sports in Korea.
His ability may not be at the level it was at his prime, but he is still full of passion
and for the sake of the fans that still cheer for him, he refuses to put down his mouse.

That passion alone has led him to give up all of the joys of life to do nothing but play the game to make up for the shortfall in his ability.

But he is hurt so many times every day by the bullies that abuse him like a punchbag, refusing him the courtesy that he deserves as a pioneer, instead calling him a has-been, a reject, telling him to retire and the like.

The thing that I had always been thankful for from TL was that even if his performances were lacking, you were always there with us to cheer him on together.

Because you became the force from which he could take strength.

But I am hurt that even some among you would attack us without the full evidence.

This lawsuit will progress as planned.

Whenever they are sued, Korean cyberbullies always come to the police station in tears and beg for forgiveness.

But that is always the limit to what they do.

They never stop their attacks.

That is why I accept that they are criminal and want them to receive their punishment as criminals.
You don't have to hit someone for it to be assault.

These people are a menace that launch assaults against people in cyberspace and even commit murder.

Haeun_Cielu deleted the tweets that he had sent me saying that he had jumped to a false conclusion and his tweets of apology.

I, too, have apologized for losing my temper and we have reconciled.

I have now shown to you everything that has been on my mind with sincere honesty.

If you still wish to call it an overreaction,

There is nothing more that I can say you.

I am grateful to those who read this long message.
I will take the sluggish performance of SlayerS as being the result of my own shortcomings as a manager, and will try to work even harder.

Thank you. - Jessica -

Thank you for your side of the story, I'm a SlayerS fan and have been following the situation with interest and I'm relieved about your side of the story.

I feel sorry about the treatment Eve has received, her debut in gstl ended in her head being photoshopped into pornographic material which is in no means acceptable (I'm sure everyone here would be furious if Eve was your sister for example, it's easy to disregard these things as overreacting when its not happening to your immediate family or close ones).

Thank you
