Puma's skill level will drop like mad. EG will solidify its reputation as a joke team. TSL loses its best member arguably. The fans will have second thoughts about supporting Puma.

Imagine Boxer's reaction to this!

Except it helps EG, who now have a second competitive player. EG can now actually go to major tournaments with a decent chance of winning (and thus getting better sponsorships) and set themselves apart from other foreigner teams -- at least until those other foreigner teams clean up their lineups and get some Koreans too.

If teams wish to keep their players, then write a contract. The player gets room, board, a modest salary possibly in exchange for 6 months to a year of loyalty.

Problem with this is that a contract won't help if your player wants to leave. Sure you can keep him and keep paying his salary but he won't perform to his normal level. That's also probably the reason TSL straight out decided to release him from his contract.

Let me fill you in on Koreans.

Koreans have a level of kinship deeper than westerners. If you get together as a team, you will become very close. The coach is a father figure and he wanted what would make Puma happy. If Puma wanted to go and join another team then the coach would let him.

This doesn't change the fact that EG is a complete joke of a team who didn't respect TSL as a team, didn't respect SC2 as a sport, didn't respect the Korean culture and they certainly don't respect Puma.

The worst part is Puma had such a bright future ahead of him too.

lol my korean genes are kicking in for the whole respect thing ==;;

I was going to speculate blindly on how the Korean teams seem to just have very close relationships between their players, but I can get behind that speculation if I have someone more familiar with Korean culture confirming my suspicions.

From what I've seen in the GSL, read in interviews, and just gleaned from following the Korean SC2 scene for almost a year, it seems that players on a Korean team are extremely close to one another. They have a level of intimacy that I don't really think is typical in western culture. So, the outrage is far more understandable from a different cultural perspective.

Wow. Just wow.
Sucks that it had to come this way, but good pick up for EG and best of luck to TSL.

If this keep happening it will be hard to the mainstream audience to accept eSport as a sport.

We need more professionalism in esport :/

Pretty messed up how EG picked up puma. That's gotta suck for the TSL coach... You see your player come home from oversees to congratulate him on winning the tourney and Puma's like "Leavin' for EG PEACE!"

LOL..you guys getting upset over this and mad at EG are so silly. You realize this happens all the time right? Minigun, Cruncher, Grubby (during wc3), and an endless stream of other players have left their team for another in the past. What makes this case special? Because he's Korean? It's a brilliant move by EG. Puma will actually get a respectable salary now and be able to fly around the world playing video games and having a good time.

If anything, this is an indication that Starcraft 2 is going to be the biggest e-sport to date.

it wasn't okay then and it isn't okay now, maybe?

You guys are overreacting way too much, lol. Yeah, it's definitely sad news that Puma decided to leave the way he did, but it's not really EG's fault that they decided to contact the player first just to see if he was interested. It's hard to contact coaches on the other side of the world, and if Puma was interested in EG then he'd clear things up with the Coach. Anyways, good addition to the team from EG. You guys are awesome.

It has been hinted that TSL is far from innocent in this matter.. I wouldn't be surprised if this is only 'the top of the iceberg' in terms of drama that will come out of this

He already had a contract with TSL? (Assuming that is fact, based on them 'releasing' him)

Low blow. Just for that, we wont be buying any more swedish fish OR meatballs. How do you like them apples?

Yeah, it's not like any swedes was involved in the CS1.6 affair with gux, delpan, fnatic & SK.

Similiar situation this; like gux-thingy if it Puma wasn't under contract and like delpan if Puma had a contract... either way sirscoots commented on in on Lo3 in a pretty critical manner then so I would assume he has an explanation.

some reading for those interested: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=227816

I don't remember what episode of Lo3 this was discussed, one in may I would assume... anyone know?

I'm very aware of the fact that the players were Swedes. What does that have to do with it? I don't blame Puma for this. I blame the company behind, I understand if Puma wanted to go to EG cause they obviously offered him more money. But EG should've handled this much better, for example, talking to the TSL manager? Or atleast letting them know before Puma did?

You brought up US thats why I pointed out that we Swedes can be just as $$ about e-sports, so don't make such statements, it's inflammatory to discussions.

has there been any official word from EG yet? i've clicked on 20+ pages and there's only about 1 page worth of original comments, the rest is just copy paste and people thinking they're clever.

edit: any chance of puma going to this MLG?

I love how there needs to be a system to prevent foreign teams from stealing korean players, but its fine that we have to move to korea and live in their houses with their teams to compete. No respect for this coach, with one-sided comments like this I can see why some people choose to leave TSL. Grats to EG, hope Puma does well, I loved seeing him play at the NASL finals and he was really teary-eyed after his win there because of the love the foreign scene showed him.
He saw how civilized men behave, he never forgot and he never forgave.

Well, at least Puma won't have to practice 12 hours a day to get a paycheck now. Too bad he'll probably end up perpetually a runner up.

How can people make such baseless comments saying "Typical EG"... What was EG done shady? Have you ever looked at SK,Fnatic, or MyM? If Coach Lee didn't put him under a contract(In which case if he did he could take legal actions against EG) than let EG take him.

I thought in major sports, teams couldn't just approach a player who's already under contract? Isn't it tampering? Don't teams get punished for that?

You say that as if it's a good thing. Professional sports are a corrupt, evil industry who profiteer massively off players and treat them like cattle to be sold.

The fact that SC2 players are allowed to actually hear about better opportunities for themselves is great.

Are we rooting for players here, or is this another case of "we want our nerd sports to emulate jock sports so we look cool"?

players are completely allowed to persue better opportunities for themselves. if eg was respectful at all about this whole thing and went to tsl about recruiting puma, if he really isn't under a contract of any sort, this thread wouldn't have been made

And if he was under contract, and EG went to TSL with a far better offer, and TSL didn't relay the amount to Puma, and said "no, he's ours", a thread wouldn't have been made either.

The player should decide where he goes, and whom he talks to. The fact that special interest groups for teams (i.e. professional sports associations) call this "tampering" and prohibit it doesn't actually mean that "tampering" is unethical. If anything is unethical it is prohibiting a person from even speaking to other prospective employers.

These "ethics" lead to Kespa.
Not supporting teams who take robber baron money.
