That chart illustrates a rough estimate of roughly how many points the average player will have -- on the extreme end -- by the time they get promoted across seasons. It does not represent a cause of promotion. Also worth noting is that no similar chart has been published for Heart of the Swarm, and the league populations (and therefore the associated breakpoints) have changed since Wings of Liberty.

I was masters last season (or the one before) and havent played much since then. I come back and to get into the swing of things I am playing unranked, and it is pairing me against gold/plat/diamond (and one masters) players. I played a gold ranked player and he lost 12 points to me (sorry ). I havent lost a game yet, but I also havent been pressured at all really, and I am afraid I am getting to be lazy now.

And that promotion/demotion is only determined by the movement of your MMR based on strength of the opponents you win or lose against but MMR is a separate issue from "points" and bonus pool? Or are they linked in a way I don't understand? What you stated is correct, but it sounds like MMR and points are linked in a way you don't understand. When you play a game, how many points you get depends on the difference between your point score (adjusted for what league you're in) and your opponent's MMR. So, if you play a bunch of games, your point score will converge on a place determined by your MMR. What this means is that ranking in division follows MMR for active players, but inactive players will tend to drop down the list as they fail to use up their bonus pool. So, over a number of games, points tend to follow MMR changes around, but they're not locked to it.

Basically, since no one leaves a league once they are in it, can a league become full and it become very difficult to get promoted into it?

To be specific, does the fact that a league might hit its target population effect how many people are allowed to be promoted into it? League populations are not enforced at all. If you are in Diamond and playing against Master opponents and winning, you can be promoted into Master if there are 2%, 5%, 30% of the population in Master because the only thing that matters is whether you cross that Master MMR threshold.

If this is true, masters should grow over the course of a season and bronze shrink. Has this been occurring?

I don't know about Bronze but generally Bronze isn't very active anyway so when players get into Bronze they tend to stay there unless they're playing games to try and get out. When I was doing activity research I found that only about 1% of Bronze players even have less than one week's worth of unspent bonus pool. At the end of the last season, they've reworked the master league to be around 2-3% again.
