Recently I found myself playing and realising that I'm often torn between which is fastest or a more accurate way of getting from one view on the map to the other, minimap clicking or screen scrolling? Obviously for a long distance, minimap clicking is wise but for those short distances it can be a toss up between these two, or maybe you use a hotkey to get there.

I was also wondering what screen scrolling speed top level players use? Is it just preference or is there more to it? Mine is currently at 20% and I feel this is possibly too sluggish, especially with dealing with stuff like going from controlling units at the front of your main to dealing with a drop at the back of your main. Of course I also don't want to go whizzing past the desired target and misclick on the other side of the map!

I am sure there are others that have wondered this but I couldn't find a similar thread about scrolling speed, just how you prefer to move around the map, so great players or even players that feel very comfortable with their scrolling, please let me and any other curious players know what you think is best!

I use 90%, by no means am I a pro, but I feel that's what works best and any more is sacrificing accuracy.

However pros do more hotkeying and clicking on the minimap more than anything.

What he said. Used to have it at whatever the default value is, but after changing and getting used to it I never thought of going back. If you use the scroll at all you will be better with it at 100%.

96% not quite the try hard 100% (j/k :D) no real reason for the 96 just felt perfect not TOO fast but just slow enough.

i have mine set for 74%.... dunno thats just the one that i'm most comfortable with and been playing with.

a while back i would slowly increase it by 1-2% every few days to get it to what felt "perfect" for me, as it's all in individual preferences, and 74% is where i ended at!

Mouse scroll at 75%. I have a hard time controlling it if it's faster.

I use mouse click + minimap to jump to specific places if they're far away.

But I hardly ever scroll. Only if it's something within my frame of vision on the screen do I scroll to it. 95% of the time I'm using the minimap, hotkeys, and location memory with the F keys. Scrolling just makes my movements feel choppy and slow.

Thanks everyone for the input, general consensus is about 75% and above so I really should raise mine up and see how I go with it, though I'll probably be out of control for a while Are there any good players around that use low screen scrolling or perhaps almost none at all and rely solely on screen capture and other hotkeys?

Look at Day9 Daily #252 - Sean talks about exactly this thing. And I agree with him. You should use the minimap 95% of the time for screen movement.
Rest you can do with your Screen hotkeys.

Only use screen scrolling for when you are in a battle and are moving with your army or if you are already really close to where you want to scroll to.

This minimizes the time you waste on repositioning your screen.

And seriously, watch that Daily, it was a real eye-opener!

wtf I played around with this setting yesterday and I had it on 40% which is really slow but its accurate for me, so I tried to increase it because its obvious it needs to be as fast as possible. So I tried and 65 and had to go back down to 60 because there is no accuracy what so ever. In milliseconds I overshoot screens and end up with only an edge of the screen I was aiming for. Edit, granted I still need to get used more to 60 and play around with it, but even with 60 if you go on minimap and accidently hit the side while you move your cursor back to the main screen, it shifts a ton, il actually check it out later, because maybe I have it all wrong.

Assuming it's a modifier setting, it would be interesting if people post as much of their mouse settings as possible. Because that is gonna relate to the actual speed somewhat and can be used more accurately in comparison. Aswell as make me not feel like that much of a noob or force me to adjust to a higher setting. Because I feel, esp with people being maxed out which means their optimal setting is most likely even higher than 100, it has something to do with the mouse having a lower sens input wise.

So, Razer Lachesis, up to date drivers, on 1500dpi, 10/10 driver, 6/10 windows, no accel. and if the windows cursor speed is the one being used as the input for starcraft its on 5.5 on the driver slider. And if the mouse speed setting in starcraft is being used for the scrolling speed aswell its on 49.

I'm really curious because I feel my mouse can be quite fast, so for FPS for example im using 0.9 sens which is a 333% decrease from the default which is 3 I believe. Atleast for CS:S that is.
Anyway I'm just interested to see if the people with the 90-100% settings have really low sens or a lower dpi mouse. So that it will equalize more compared to my setting.

I doubt 100% is standard. I know Huk uses a really low scroll speed (20% or so)

I myself prefer around 30%, but use hotkeys more then anything.

If you have a high scroll speed, that generally means you don't use position hotkeys (f2-f5), building/unit hotkeys, or minimap clicking enough.

Ideally, you want this low because when you actually use it, you don't want to have to scroll back or forth to find a position on screen.

I doubt huk uses 20%, what's the point of limiting yourself that much? So you need to scroll just 1 screen and you gonna take 2 sec to scroll there? lol

70%.

You don't need 100% or something ridiculously fast like that.

Rely on your hotkeys more than jerking the screen around, trust me.

Obviously. People are not discussing the use of hotkeys to get around vs scrolling. Everyone scrolls many times throughout a game. The topic creator wanted to know what other people set their scroll speed too and maybe some insight as to why.

If there was no accuracy drawback and just the benefit of speed then 100% would be adviseable for myself or other players? But how hard is it to adjust to that kind of speed?

For those people talking about using hotkeys to view most things ingame, do you think this is a more optimal way of playing/moving around? Do you find that screen scrolling is more obsolete the more you play? I think I screen scroll far too much with my play personally.

I use 100%. My mouse is 2500dpi and I use 50% mouse speed in-game and in windows.

I don't see the point of NOT using 100% once you learn to be accurate with it. I use the minimap always for 1+ screen length movement and scrolling for under 1 screen length movement.

I learned to be accurate at 100% from BW. I had it at 50%, then 60%, then 70%..etc until I can be accurate at 100%. After that point, I could use 100% mouse scroll for all RTS games.
