So a friend and I decided to push the limits and attempt to crash our game via extensive overlord exposure.
And by this I mean... Well... Just look at the pictures.

There was a counter for the overlords as he made them. It bugged out around 1000 and reset. We estimate around 1500 overlords.
At this point the game physically will not let him make any more units. It is just ridiculous how many overlords there were. With that amount of units on screen, hell even on map, its obvious that the lag was intense. We got about 2 fps at all times.

lets assume we have a 4vs4, there is a unit limit needed from 1600 supply (4 * 2 * 200), theoretically this could be 3200 zerglings, not counting mass ovis.
Is it even possible to MAX OUT a 4vs4 when the unit limit seems to be at 1500?

We tried to make them all poop. But at 2fps and a max of 255 or so per unit group, it just wasnt possible. We had a good amount pooping.

I've run into a max unit cap when playing risk. Couldn't move half my troups and couldn't make any new ones. Was kind of hard to win when nobody could attack.

in bw when you had CCMU on overlords and scourges in the air it would bounce around the map because units pushing against themselves trying to get to 1 overlord. Does it do that in sc2? Or does the mass just sit still?

one time i was winning so bad i just made mass overlords and sent them to his base. He complained about how he couldnt click on any of his buildings. At first it was funny, but then i realized how sad it really was.

I decided to try and do this myself, and my results were well over 1500. I never noticed a "cannot create more units" message, but it's entirely possible I missed it.
I have the game still running now, with 8 full control groups of overlords, an additional group of 90, 144 drones, 1 Nydus Network & 2 Worms, 22 hatcheries. Each of those hatcheries has three ready-to-hatch overlords that refuse to hatch and no larva.
So if you include the hatcheries & nyduses and exclude the eggs (I'll explain why in a moment), that's 2299.
So I destroy a hatchery. 1 of those ready-to-hatch overlords comes out, and all my hatcheries now have 1 larva. However, I can't use any of them. All of the portraits to build a unit are gone. The icon to create a new Nydus Worm is there, but when I try it doesn't work. If I cancel one of the won't-hatch overlords, all my hatcheries get another larva, but I am still unable to use it.
So buildings count towards the final amount. Larva and eggs do not, and eggs will simply not hatch if you're at the limit. Minerals don't seem to count either, because I still had some on the map when my hatcheries stopped producing larva, and when they were gone new overlords didn't hatch.
As far as lag, it's really not as bad as I expected so long as things are standing still. If I move all my control groups of overlords it doesn't even lag that much at first, until they get to their destination. The act of them spreading out practically locks up my computer, but once they are it's not that bad (all things considered).
Edit: It seems I was wrong about the non-hatching overlords. They did count to the total, as canceling some causes others to hatch. So the total is somewhere between 2300-2400.

theres atleast on the EU servers a fast map with basically infinite resources AND no supply for any unit. having 100 broodlords flooding the screen with broodlings or like 200 sentries activating guardian shield isnt good for your fps

I saw a video on youtube back in Phase 1 of the beta where someone did a 1v1, maxed population limits with speedlings and then went at it.
It was pretty insane!

Re uploaded the pictures, sorry for that. As to the poster a few posts up. 2400 is crazy.
It may be that we miscounted, or that the lag just stopped us from making more units, but pressing the buttons, the hot keys, etc wouldn't create the units unless we killed off other things.

kkkkk, reminds me of 3v3 games on hunters. wall in the last guy standing and create 20,000 minerals worth of overlords and send them all into his base for the fun of it.

I built a bunch of creep tumors once, and it would only show a certain number of units on the mini-map and remove everything else (buildings, etc.). Can't remember how many though, exactly.
Might have been around 1000 units total, not sure.
Interesting how there'd be only a 1500 limit though.
Edit: Makes sense that that 1500 wasn't a real limit. I wonder if values around 2250-2500 are per player or not.

ok i just did some testing on that map and i got this amount of units

i can also say at this moment new spawned units and larvae are locked, u cant do anything with them (the mutas and lings u can see on the screens here)

in addition: - u cant have more than 21 larvae at a hatch, if u spawn more, some die to keep the number at 21 - max units in a group is 255

We had someone do this in the fastest game map a while ago and I happened to have archons... seeing a grouped up bunch of overlords being popped at the same time by archons is great.
