Pro gamers should wear costumes, like Gwar.

This may come off as an incredibly retarded post, but while I was laying on the floor of an apartment licking ranch dressing off the floor on the weekend, a thought popped into my head.

I'm not sure about all of you, but i've seen a decent amount of interviews with top level starcraft players where the players look kind of... dirty. Or sickly. Or completely fashion-ignorant. I was wondering to myself, "Is this an obstacle for the growth of e-sports?"

Is it going to be harder for north American and European audiences to buy in to the whole starcraft craze when the stars of the show look... well... bad?

I mean, I'm all for inner beauty, individuality, and not valuing petty things in society like fashion or good looks, but frankly, the majority of people out there don't seem to be on the same page. If eSports ever want to become a fully accepted 'sport' in western culture, it's going to need to cater to the petty values of the average individual.

So I'm wondering TL, do you think that the top level pro gamers who become the recognizable part of the scene should be obligated to make a little bit of an effort to look good? Of course, there are plenty of well dressed, healthy looking, badasses that have been making strides for this community, but there are also many who don't seem to take care of themselves very well.

I realize this topic is a little... out there... but I think the core issue is a valid one. I hope I am not crucified for posting this.

Wait no one bothered to even question this?

Still....no one bothered to question this after 4 pages.

Gaming is inextricably linked to the stereotype of the ugly/wimpy nerd... to bring "e-sports" to casual viewers you'll need someone to repudiate that i.e. someone good looking.

If "e-sports" remains a niche, then it doesn't matter.

Whenever I see NaDa I can't help but let a little tendril of, highly manly, drool run out from between my lips.

if you look at big fighting game tournaments, like evo... its interesting to note that people usually look pretty good there fashion-wise...

maybe its a pc thing as when youre not at a tournament, youre generally not in the presence of other people either, as opposed to fighting games where good players are at arcades/each others' houses etc.

Wow, Idra looks way different in this picture than any other ive seen of him.

I think physical presentation is going to be huge for the growth of esports. Like the guy above me said, i read this post thinking of the qxc video from day9s lol.

I thought that was frickin Harry Potter lol

well most of the koreans look kinda "good". but i guess thats because they are prepared to go on stage and look ok.just like mr sumozerg looked like a boss on stage even tho he was nothing but a chubby korean kid.

outside of that... some just are natural beauties (some1 link the wcg day9 pic with the fuzzy hair please) and some will always look like cliche basements nerds like idra.

There's a reason Bisu and Jaedong have more fan girls than Flash.

If you ever want e-sports to become acceptable to mainstream society, you need to adopt some of mainstream society's values, mainly making yourself presentable in the eyes of your peers.

Korea is much more professional than NA for example, which is mostly scrubs in t-shirts and hoodies who need to comb their hair.

I don't know about "fashion" but it wouldn't kill them to shave, wash their hair and wear a shirt for an interview :/. Anything else is just bonus but I think trying to be presentable is within everyone's reach.

Hygiene should be a must - and that is not even a pro gaming requirement...you should just always be clean and presentable no matter what you do (or don't do).

I think personality and style would really get the eSports movement out there. Find one top tier player with some quick wit and a handful of charming affection and all you need is to make him/her look like the guy/gal-next-door type. People respond to that.

once the money was big its easy to make nerdz sexy before game, look at korean like bisu, hsawin, Julyzerg could also be sexy :p, so they just need gosu hair dresser and other pro to make them look good

Pressured? No, it's really too irrelevant from the game. Is it in their best interest to consider looking their best when they get interviewed or play an offline showmatch/tourney? Yes, it'll likely benefit them somehow. For example, a sponsor is more likely to pick up an attractive player, if he's in the same league of skill as the other pros.

Yes. Absolutely. The leagues should pressure the teams, and the teams should pressure the players, assuming we're going by a system similar to the Koreans. Regardless, pro gaming should be a career, and should be treated as such. Professionalism is what's going to bring e-sports to the mainstream.
