Hello Team Liquiders. Today I come with a very peculiar problem, which I can't quite seem to find an answer for. I play SC2 and am in Silver League(not very impressive, I know), but I find that I have trouble sitting down and just playing many games of SC2 in a row. I find that I'll play one, and it doesn't really matter if I win or lose, I just don't feel like I can play another game, as if I'm scared to click on the button to find another opponent. I originally played fps shooters, and have no trouble playing those for hours on end. I also can watch streams for hours on end as well. I believe I watched about 10 out of the 12 hours that BigT streamed yesterday. I don't know if its a strange fear.. or if I'm just mentally exhausted.

Does anyone else feel like this or am I just stupid? Tips would also be helpful on how I can play more than one game in one sitting.
The end of an era.

You have the same problem as EVERY SINGLE other player. There is a lot of stuff to focus on in sc2, and it takes a lot of mental processing. In other games, you focus on one thing and let your natural reactions handle it. It takes a while for you to do everything naturally in sc2, but once you do, you won't feel stressed about sc2 anymore.

LoL me too me too. All my friends feel this way too. Especially on Ladder.

Only solution to this i say, is don't care about your stats. If you get a IRL practice partner, you will find you can chew up 20 games no problem.

I get the same thing. I could play UMS (assuming the custom game systems gets fucking fixed so I can play something other than Nexus Wars, Battlecraft and TD) all day, but I don't like laddering because I winding up below .500 (27-26 atm, I don't want to drop 2!) and I hate custom melee's because I feel like I'm accomplishing nothing as they don't go on my stats or anything.

i think a lot of people feel like that, laddering can be intimidating. most normal human beings love statistics and love to see progress (positive ratios/stats) and fear losing of course.

but its best to get over that fear and just play. easier said than done ofcourse

lol i felt the same back when i was playing BW ... i created a game and prayed that no one joined so i could give myself a pat in the back saying "at least you tried" ... but someone came ... and i was like "holy shit what am i gonna do T_T" ... then he's like "gogogogo" ... im like *click Start* ... and 10 minutes later i typed out feeling like someone just fucked me in the neck ;_;

though in SC2 it's much easier since there are so many wow newbies around so i could just spam dddddddd then stim then a-move then lolgg then feel good about myself :3

I'm brain dead after a bunch of games of SC myself as well. I'd start to play sluggishly, wouldn't be thinking about the game, would make stupid mistakes, forget what was coming next in my BO, etc. Go blast your quads or something and come back

Yeah I have the same problem. When Im winning, I just get this satisfied feeling and I don't feel like playing anymore. My suggestion would be to get a rival or a friend and try to beat his rank or his score or record.

Perhaps SC2 is not really the game for you or maybe something you don't want to take in a competative light. I mean i can be completly wrong but what I do on my down time is watch TONS of replays and take a lot a lot of notes. Also get a practice partner,on this forum their is a thread where you can probally find people on your level. You have to be motivated to play and to get better. For me its just the fact that SC has been in my life ever since the early BW days and i've always wanted to get better and better at it. Just find a reason to keep playing. If not just go casual and play custom maps :D. But yeah it can be a fear that you may have (nothing personal). What I would do is watch replays to get pumped and practice build orders. And you should really care if you win or lose because it gives you motivation to become a better player. Already not caring is making you develop into a casual player which I am not sure you want to be. If you do then all the power to you .

I get this sometimes too... Sometimes after a bunch of games I just feel like I can't think and my contacts are all hard and hurting my eyes.. I usually go eat something or go smoke a bowl or watch some porn or something then come back to sc2.

That's Awesome.

As for me, in the beta, even though I loved SCII I kept avoiding 1v1's. I made the rule that my first game could be a 2v2/3v3/4v4 or a custom as a warm-up but the next ones would have to be the dreaded 1v1. Just force yourself to have to do what you fear the most as much as you can. It's kinda exciting to be so into something and at the same time have such a strong feeling against it.

Yeah, I like to warm up in team games as well. It helps the transition into 1v1's, for me at least.

I always make sure I complete a few build orders as perfectly as I can in YABOT before I go to ladder. Helps with warming up while making sure you know you got your main BO's down.

A lot of people don't really like massing games... I personally like to play 2-3 games at a time, then taking a break. Works well when I practice with my team so we can take turns.

I do the same when I ladder... 2-3 games every few hours, and if I still feel like playing sc2, i'll play some challenges/campaigns.

It's too mentally demanding to play a game and actively improve for hours and hours.

If you're playing for fun, then just play whenever you want. If you play to get better, play until you don't feel you benefit from it anymore.

For anyone who finds it difficult to play because they don't want to lose their precious >50% ratio, my advice to you is to tank your record. Switch to random and just play a few games with crazy strategies. Once you are 20 losses in the hole, it doesn't matter any more and you can just relax and focus on playing the game, having fun or getting better, whatever you want.

In the long run that semi-intentional lose streak will just be eaten up and disappear, but in the short term it may give you the mental relaxation required to enjoy the game.

Don't think about it, just do it, then it's too late. If you are super worried the ladder will probably be reset one day for some reason anyway.

i get the exact same thoughts after ending a match

what i do is i boot up the replay and analize my own preformance, allowing myself to calmly process the match

and then entering the next one with a calm mind and a couple reminders for myself

get a real-life friend to play you.
then you only practice one match-up.
(ex. i am terran, my friend is protoss
i play him, i practice TvP, he practices PvT
then we go play other people or watch replays/vods, learn new shit, and throw in our regular matches and we both get better
the secret is finding some1 closer to your skill-level as having a too-good-for-you sparring partner or a too-bad-for-you one is helping neither. One wins too easy, the other does not understand why he lost)

the down-side of my way is that i tend to beat protoss quite often, but i suck in TvZ and especially TvT.
just join a clan, who has at least 2 from either race and practice all 3 match-ups like this.
Trust me, watching replays/vods will do you better than playing ladder noobs all day.

i came from hard core fps as well and had this exact problem. I stuck through it and now I can play for hours on end and most games my heart is racing. It just takes time getting used to, but once you do you can't quit.

I find that watching streams here on TL helps to relax.

just like playing basketball for too long will drain u physically, starcraft will drain you mentally. It is a mental sport and the only way to get past this is to build up ur stamina. How? same way as any other sport. Just play more and practice harder.

Motivation is hard to keep if u play alone on ladder or aren't on vent/ts/skype with friends.
I myself am very motivated and last week I played for 20 hours straight on ladder after that I was so tired and demotivated I didn't touch sc2 ladder for few days :D
Just went out and chilling

I like laddering with my friend (not 2v2's). We whine when we get 4/6 pooled 2 times in a row, laugh at something weird/odd that opponent did, and then play a 1v1. Its much better than laddering solo.

Yep I agree OP.
Every game presents a different challenge, slightly unique in how it outcomes and I guess I have a fear of the unknown. I'd love to be able to replay the same game afterwards and refine my play, rather than play a new game in a different matchup / opponent and do something silly there too.

It's not AS bad once you have 3 different openings in your mind, depending on seeing the race at the start, random can go fuck it self though.

I feel exactly the same way. All the time.

It gets easier, just play a couple a day and eventually you can play 5 or 6 in a row (or more!) without getting nervous. Even after playing BW ladder, all of beta, and now release, I STILL get the jitters before and in game. It'll go away though. Just play for fun, and don't worry too much about losing, go lose a few on purpose! Not like sac your workers, but in base proxy gate, hatch or bunker rushes win only half the time, so play cheesy for a bit just to get the fear of losing out of the way. IT'S A GAME, HAVE FUN! (and good luck :D)

One question for you guys. Do you guys only feel this way when playing on ladder, or do you feel this way when playing unranked 1v1s as well? Maybe it should be something you could try.

I actually feel the exact opposite (most of the time).

I have to be in a certain "mindset" to ladder.. but if I am in that mindset, I need to play like 15 games in a row. I cant play just 1 or 2 games, it makes me feel like I didnt play any at all (as far as skill retention)

But theres days where I cant pull together the strength (weither it be physically tired or emotionally tired) to do it, so often days I just 2s or something else and wait for a period where I am in the zone to ladder hard. Sometimes its only 1 or 2 days a week, sometimes its like 5 days straight. Lately its been only 1 day a week haha.

irs very common to think like this. starcraft puts all the pressure on u and if u dont perform well, ull think that oh darn...i lost the game (u lost the game btw) and this negative reaction (even if u win ull be like, can i risk another? like...drugs) will take its toll on u after a while because ur afraid of losing progress.

this is all mindfuck.

u can never seriously lose progress or experience in starcraft by playing starcraft. just keep playin regardless of skill and ull be where u should be. once starcraft becomes natural 2 u ull be like hell yeah bring it on 1v1ers my protoss bawl will stomp ur face and sc will cease to blind u

p.s. counter strike 1.6 is...da bomb
p.s.s. this tends 2 not happen in regular games as regular games dont change anything so the pressures off

I have this too. It's really annoying because you start to associate these "negative thoughts" with the game which makes it even worse sometimes

I'm still not really sure what causes me to be really nerveous to push the "PLAY" button.
I've played a lot of games, and I only get these kind of "jitters" in online RTS games, i can play any kind of FPS hop in and just have fun without caring whether i win or lose.
But when it's an RTS I'm somehow really nervous about doing something really stupid, or losing in a really cheesy way.

I remember playing SC2 beta for a while, and in one of the games I got cheesed so badly by a P that did a proxy pylon with 2 Gateways. I was terran and I did wall in, but when I get pressured I mentally shut down and I start making these huge mistakes. Like in that game, i forgot to keep making marines to defend my wall in. And it's so frustrating. I mean i can understand that I get outmicroed by a better player, or that i forget to play my macro game and forget to use MULEs on cooldown when i'm pressured. But forgetting to make offensive units when you're gate is being harrassed by chrono boosted Zealots is like a total blank out xD

The ironic thing is, that again this only happens in RTS games. Because in a game like counter strike (which I played a lot) my favorite part of the game was when (i always played in like 16v16 servers) was the only one left on my team vs 5-6 opponents and still managing to win the game. That adrenaline rush and being pressured made my game even better; yet in an RTS i totally blank out and lose focus under nearly the same conditions

I guess it's just lack of experience.

It takes a fair bit of mental power to player for long periods of time so its natural to play a few then take a break, there is also the fact that you are doing a lot of repetetive actions in games so it can get quite tiring in that respect.

I've been playing SC for years and never gotten over this. I can't string together more than 5 competitive games at any time. I don't think it's that big of a problem to be honest.

I've always felt pretty much the same as most everyone else description, the game truly does drain someone after a few matches, especially the ones that are losses lol. But time and practice will fix all of that just as with all things in life glhf!

I usually hit about 2-3 in a row then break for a bit. I play wow, read the forums, something OTHER than Starcraft for like about 30 minutes to an hour, then go back and hit the grind.

Helps keep me mentally fresh.

I kind of equate it to learning to drive. To begin with you have to concentrate on everything you do and nothing comes naturally and at the end of an hour you can be exhausted but gradually over time some of the things you do without ever thinking about them.

Day9 touched on this a bit with a recent daily when he says dont be afraid just play and think of how much harder it is for him knowing how well known he is.

since these kinds of threads popup almost daily, i have to say it might be worth it to buy 2 accounts, play one when you are mentally refreshed and want something focused, play the other one for fun and with off races where you don't care about your stats and what not.

Have a warm up routine, I promise you 100% it will help.
Experiment around to see what works for you.
you could for example...
-watch replays
-watch streams
-play campaign
-play against an ai
-play a team game
-think up a build order/strategy you want to try
-any combination of the above

I used to come home after school, microwave a chicken pot pie and watch replays until I finished my meal to get in the starcraft zone
