I was playing one of the campaign missions and learned something pretty awesome. I had about 8 idle workers and they were all over the place so I figured something out. If you have 2 or more idle workers if you click the idle worker button once to select the first then hold shift you can click it again and again until all idle workers are selected then you can re-assign them as fit. I always used to click it once then tell that worker to do something then again and again telling workers to do something one at a time. this is a time saver for sure and I'll be using it in multiplayer now no doubt.
Edit: I realize my idea is not clever, thanks for that.
Ctrl+F1=better.

Why don't u just drag a box and tell them all to mine then take 3 and put on gas?
or, you can press Ctrl + F1 and select all idle workers
Well I don´t know how far spread that is but i´ve been doing that since the secound week of beta. Had a lot of idel workers back mostly then and dunno just did it without thinking and it worked.
You could also hold Ctrl and click the idle worker button, use that one all the time.

^ This o_O

Most of the time all my idle workers are spread out so dragging a box doesn't work. Sure if your ran out of mins and they're all there then that's great but otherwise no. I wasn't aware of Ctrl+f1 but I'm on a mac with other functions assigned to the f-keys so this trick works well for me.

Nice tip OP, thanks.

I believe he's assuming that all the workers are spread throughout the map where it is not easy to drag/select.

Finally someone thinks it's nifty ^-^ I was starting to feel stupid.

any tricks can be helpful in some situations, but honestly when will you have idle workers?
All F1 does is select the unit. It's the same as left clicking them. So Shift+Select = add/remove from group and Ctrl+Select = select all.

This isn't a healthy way of thinking in a game that revolves around strategy.=P

I honestly hardly ever have an idle worker, unless I send some scv's out with my army. Thanks to shift-queuing, you can just have your guy build something, then have him go straight back to mining. Or have him build several things in a row.

It also revolves around APM.

^ This. Also, try using select worker -> build something -> shift click back to minerals... Less idle workers is key.
Control F1 is the best. Also use shift button back to minerals after the building is complete. It saves TONS of time and greatly decreases the amount of micro you need to do while building your base.
ctrl - f1 is great, but if you hold shift and click minerals after sending an scv/probe to build it will go back to mining immediately after building.
then you won't have idle workers in the first place
Let me blow your guys mind, don't let your workers go idle. Use SHIFT beforehand!
I always start the game by pressing ctrl+f1 to select all workers, that gives me time to point the mouse at the mineral patches. After that: build worker and split before the workers are at the first mineral patch.
oh nice i wasnt even aware of ctrlf1
ctrl - f1 Oo! DAM why nobody said this to me before....
dont know whats the problem with idle workers .. in the whole game maybe one or two idle workers exist for me, thats maybe some scouts .. not nearly game changing
you can shift queue commands .. so if i send a worker to build something i send it with shift back to some minerals instantly ..
i dont know where you all get your idle workers from?!?
Wow I never new about the Ctrl F1... cool thanks
I would recommend that you change you keyboard settings to allow the function keys to work correctly while you play. Trivial to change under they system settings and then change back. Then your function keys will, well, function.
We zerg dont have idle workers -_- :D
how do you have idle workers over the map??
edit- must be a non z thing

Ctrl + click works fine, you don't need the f-key. And it's just holding Ctrl + clicking, a lot faster than 8x shift + clicking.
by the way, how do you freaking center the camera on the idle worker ?

And it's just holding Ctrl + clicking, a lot faster than 8x shift + clicking. If and only if all of your workers are idle. If some workers are working, then use ctrl+F1 to only nab the idle ones. Also, ctrl click won't select offscreen idle workers, so remember to use ctrl+F1 in these cases.
