Being a huge fan of Blizzard, SC1 was highly anticipated as well as SC2 (Warcraft 1/2, and Diablo).
I remember waiting at home for my parents after school who bought 2 copies (1 for my bro and 1 for me). I also remember my cousin calling to inform me that he got his copy as well and going nuts. I then opened it and proceeded to play ladder games immediately non-stop. My first game I did the equivalent to the now 1:1:1 build because I wanted to see all of the units. I originally thought missile turrets could attack ground for some stupid reason and lost because I massed them.
However that was over a decade ago and I'm now killing time at the office instead of grade school. Waiting at work or school, they are both still excruciating knowing the game is so close to being in my hands. Also my cousin now won't even be getting the game... he said it's a waste of time I tried to remind him how much fun SC1 was but he doesn't care.
As for me I'll be at the midnight release in Toronto. I'm one of the minorities that don't care much for the campaign but will play it eventually. I'll be laddering like mad as soon as I get it at midnight just like when I was a kid.
So where were you and what were you doing as you waited for SC1 and how does it compare to now?

I was too young to look forward to Starcraft 1. Barely 10 when it was released. Though I played the demo back then, like a maniac. Got it on some random game magazine... without knowing about the game.
|
I wasn't as well versed about the gaming scene back then, I was quite young... 12yrs old. I had been playing a lot of Warcraft 2, and barely heard about Starcraft at all. I didn't end up getting it until a few months after it was released... but after that, I was hooked :D
What actually drew me into the original SC so much was the map editor. I spent TONS of time and was really good with that editor. There is something fun and rewarding about working with such a limited editor and achieving the results you want with little tricks.
|
I only started playing rts with wc3 starting around the middle of 2008 but this is my first time every actively anticipating a game release. (Besides, how often does a game thats not a brain dead point and click game get released here anyway )
|
Hahaha thinking back i don't think i even knew the day it came out i was 8 at the time i think, but i got it a few months after it came out and boy was i terrible. feeling a little better about my abilities when i get this game
|
There were no midnight releases for Sc1 or BW where i'm from. Anywhere?
I walked into futureshop, and there was a whole shefl full of StarCraft 1997 i think..? I thought, this must be a pretty good game to have so many, so i picked one up.
|
I played a wc1 demo from a macworld demo pack cd. When I noticed the WC2 battle chest next time I went to Sam's I couldn't resist; at first I was just playing WC2, but I soon discovered how great Starcraft was, even though I didn't know anything about it at first, partially because I was 9 years old. This was in 1999, and SC has been an interest ever since.(somewhat on the backburner during my WoW years, but still present) Edit: cleaned up grammar and flow

I was 6....I got it from my aunt from the US....I didn't even ask for it,though I've only been playing seriously since the age of 16.

I was too young to actually have a clue when it released. All I know is my and my friend loved playing Wc2 over lan. Then one day we got a hold of a demo version of Starcraft, and as soon as we were done playing through it we both went and got ourself a copy. After that it's been SC1 on and off up until now.
Picking up my copy at around 10 am tomorrow, can't wait

haha wow wc1... i actually played wc1 after playing wc2 to see how it was like. not being able to right-click move was frustrating. and you had to build your structures along a cobble road which was frustrating. played a ton of wc2 on LAN too and over the modem.

I was too young as well, and let that fly by. Not this time though!

My cousin introduced the game to me in 1999. I remember hating it at first telling him "this game sucks". Now, whenever we meet, and whenever he tries to get me into another game he always says: "Remember what you said about Starcraft?", quoting my exact words. I have no retort to such verbal ownage...
But then for some reason, despite hating it and after two weeks of abstinence, I began feeling an odd urge to play again. So I begged and pleaded to my parents to buy the game for an entire month (I must've been annoying as hell).
When they finally bought me the game I was the happiest man alive.
|
I was super young so the excitement went away as soon as mommy gave me a lollipop or whatever. Honestly I didn't even pre-order or plan on playing until a couple weeks after release because I am out of town on an internship but I have anxiety and can't wait to see the streams pop up again and day[9] tonight!!!

I got SC1 cause I was bored in a Costco waiting for my parents to buy something and saw this awesome looking box and bought it.
|
This will be my first midnight release of anything. I have to keep this raging erection going for another 13 hours. :s

same, well for a game I have gone to movies before, and Harry Potter

I remember knowing about SC, but not being really excited about it. I really liked WC2 and all, but to me SC was just warcraft in space at the time. After falling in love with the game immediately after playing it, I've pretty much played it pretty consistently throughout the last 12 years until the SC2 beta went live.
I was 13 around the release, my brother's friend had brought over the game during the first week of release. We spawned a copy and played some stuff on SP before he took the disks away. After about 3 days playing on a spawned copy with him on b.net, we went out and bought the game.
we were sharing an account because we only had one computer at the time. he was working at the local library and I was doing odd jobs around the neighborhood to get some income, like cutting lawns, taking out trash, etc... We eventually got enough money to get a boxed copy and a 2nd phone line, which cost about 10 bucks a month. Our parents would get very agitated when we tied up the phone-line with our dial-up internet connection to play starcraft (which would pretty much be occupied from 3pm to 12am everyday).
When I wasn't playing the game, I was usually just watching my brother play. It was so addicting. I don't think my 7th-grade grades dropped, but I distinctly remember being pre-occupied with the game. It was basically the only thing I thought of for a few months.
Been counting down the release for Starcraft 2 for the last month, and the wait is getting pretty difficult during the last hours. The last title I got undeniably antsy over was HL2. SC1 was a very dear game to me. I am going to miss it very much, but, hell, its about time.
EDIT: so my post doesn't look like ass
|
Never really experienced the Starcraft hype back then, was too young. I had heard a lot about it before I eventually got it though.
I didn't get Starcraft until like 2002, when I bought some collector's thing with Diablo, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft/BW. I initially got it because I loved Diablo 2 and wanted to see what the first one was like and I'd had some fun times playing WC2 over LAN with some buddies before. But in the end it was SC that really got me hooked.

LOL, i told my brother the same thing about Xenogears on the psx. I've never regretted anything like the words I said that day.

I got StarCraft on day 1 and was really excited to get it since I loved WC2 so much. Now I'm at a totally new level of excitement however lol
|
I remember trying out Starcraft in an internet café near me when it was just released. I didn't have the money to buy it but since I was a regular at the place they let me try the campaign for an hour. I thought the graphics were awesome. I was just sitting there staring at the jets blowing out of the back of the SCV as it collected minerals competently stunned. I loved the game since that moment.
|
I wasn't. I knew it was coming but that's it. Didn't even buy it the first few weeks so yeah little different for sc2 :D
|
I am now 19 years old, so i didnt play starcraft when it hit the stores in 1997"people above". My first computer games i can remember was, Doom 2, War2, Heroes might and magic 2, and then came starcraft. It took 6 minutes to just enter the game:O.
Now i have played it for the last 7 years, with breaks sometimes, played wow "which sucks big time".
Hope Starcraft 2 will be as good as SC 2. People need to wait for SC 2 to develope. Same as it did for Starcraft / BW
|
It was fairly nonexistant: While I played a lot of War2 when I was even younger, I was unaware of SC's existance until I went to visit my future stepdad. The wait for Brood War was a bit tense, but I was always in trouble back then, so I knew I wasn't getting my hands on it until someone else in the house did.
|
i didnt actually did anything similar for sc1 first i was 15, second i was a warcraft player, but i played sc on a demo i dont recall if i downloaded from blizz page, so i just went to the store to get it and i just loved the game, now i have been playing beta, being hyped all the time with the news and i loved every single day of the last couple of months waiting for release, now i even got preordered the CE so i am just exited to be on the store in a couple of hours to get it :D
|
Sadly I was one of the bandwagon jumpers who heard about the game a month or two after it was released and then decided to play it for the first time. It was my first RTS ever. Bought it at futureshop here in Canada.
I still curse myself for throwing out the box years ago. I wish I had kept it then. If I recall, at the time I bought it there were three versions available, I chose the Protoss box cuz I thought it looked cool. There was also two blizzard memo pads included (also thrown out, curses!!).
However, I'm glad I kept the original starcraft and broodwar cd discs after all these years. They're a little scratched up but still playable, 10+ years later!
The vast majority of sc players that I knew back then were college age (18-21), they would be in their early 30's by now. I wonder if they're still interested in sc2 and if they have time to play it (most of them have families now).
|
I didn't know about Starcraft until my friend lent me a CD ROM with demos on it, despite playing Warcraft 2 lan style in my high school's computer Class. I snuck my dad's work laptop into my room after my family had gone to bed (they didn't want me playing PC games on week days) and played the SC demo until early, early morning. I too was blown away by the awesome graphics, and voice acting.
|
didn't wait for sc1. Just started playing it randomly in 1998. I was pretty noob back then, i used to kill my probes for calling me a "moron"

I played WC2 and loved it so I grabbed SC1. It was BW that I was most excited about.I ended up getting in trouble and my parents got rid of my SC games shortly after BW came out. Soooo sad. Maybe that is why want to play SC2 so much now. Childhood repression or something like that. I am sure Freud would know.

haha wow kali ... i used to play on something called case's gaming ladder for AOE and WC2. did well in both. bloodlusted ogres FTW!!

That was back when I didn't have to wait for games. They just came out as if by magic, and I played 'em. Nowadays, I have to wait three years just from the date of announcement. By extrapolation, by the time I'm retired and I actually have time to get my ass regularly handed to me, I'll probably have to wait 20 years or so for the games I want.
|
Same story for me with SC1 haha. Me and my cousin just sat an played LAN at my house for hours, till he inevitably had to go home Q.Q. Now Sc2 is a different story as i already have it XD. Courier came an hour ago to deliver it. Baller.
|
My parents bought me the battlechest for my birthday (I dunno I must've been 10 or 11)
I just remember my friends and I playing against people in 2v2, and 3v3 and massing Carriers/Battlecruisers/Gaurdian/Devourer. We'd always kill our opponents then unally and start killing each other before going into allied victory.

well according to this thread... everyone on TL was too young to go to a midnight release of SC1 (if there was even one)...
and it's also funny how to so many, this will be their first midnight release. Oh well, there's a first for almost everything i guess.
EDIT: i was 5 when the game was announced, didnt start playing SC or BW till about age 12

it would be interesting to hear from someone who was old enough to do the midnight SC1 release.... or can tell us if it even existed back then?
anyone?

I adopted SC1 shortly after it was released and bough the expansion a couple days after it was released. I was young and didn't really understand things like I do now. Back then it was all about the game. Boy life sure is complicated nowa days .

Well for SC2, Ive been waiting basically since BW 98' 99' around that time. (actually add a couple of years since I was still thoroughly enjoying BW, probably until Ghost was announced.)
For SC1, I woke up and watched my brother play it. But I had to wait until he was done, so, Im not sure, not too differently?

I remember having to convince my parents to let me tie up the phone line all evening long so that I could download the 18MB demo for starcraft. They were never enthusiastic about that. Thank the deity for cable internet.

He he, Starcraft 1 was one of the first games to reach our god forsaken country shortly after the release. I was in high school and didn't have much money at the time (even to get the pirated copy, buying a legit one was then unheard of), so I and two of my friends decided to buy it together and make two pirate copies of that pirate copy ourselves
I clearly remember that we were so proud to have a game that was released the same year that we got it, I think we got it around Novermber
Brood War came much faster. I had an acquaintance among the guys who imported pirated CDs from Russia, so I was among the first in my country to get a copy. Damn, the game was hard, I was already struggling with the second zerg mission :D
I didn't realise that the multiplayer can be so exciting until the final exams in high school. We stayed after the informatics exam in the computer class to play Need for Speed, because at the time it was one of the very few places where we could get so many networked PCs. Then the guy who worked there as the network administrator offered us to play Starcraft instead, 1v7 :D I couldn't believe he was serious, but he went on to easily own all of us with a bunch of carriers.
I still didn't start to play it competitively until a couple of years later. Counter-strike was the shit those days and everyone was playing it. One day we were in a PC bang and got bored of playing CS, so we decided to try something else. Starcraft happened to be one of the few other games installed on the PCs there, and we gave it a go. After one game, my friends went back to CS, but I was hooked Then I met other people in the university who were into SC, and we have spent countless hours in the nearby PC bang playing it, instead of attending Kyrgyz language lectures :D

I cant remember what I did on the release date as I was way too young to remember... but I'm sure I'm gonna be just this exited when SC 3 comes out...

I didn't buy SC1 on release, but I was very hyped about it, reading tons of articles about it in magazines such as PC Gamer prior to the launch (I was 12 by then). Eventually grabbed it a few months after the release. I basically played though the Terran singleplayer campaign and then shelved it for several months... Frankly, I was more of a C&C guy back then.
I eventually started to play BW a few years later, and though not ever getting any good at the game, I started to get more and more involved in the eSport scene surrounding StarCraft, and eventually, spent more time watching VODs than actually playing the game.
For the release of StarCraft2, things are different. After playing the Beta for quite some time now, I'm about to burst thanks to the hype and anticipation. Unfortunately, I'm currently unemployed and totally broke, and it was just pure luck that I managed to get enough cash together to cover both rent, bills and two copies of SC2 (one for myself, other for my girlfriend). I will however be able to play it on release, and this time around I'm more hyped about the multiplayer aspect than the Terran campain

I think I waited about a week to get sc1 after a friend told me about it. The wait for SC2 has been what eleventybillion years? Three quarters of which I had nothing but bare faith that there would be a sequel.
Having said that another difference is this time I spent the build up in beta from day one getting more excited, having more fun and getting better, I was a bronze SC1 player I am now a Platinum SC2 player. So the wait wasn't totally waisted ^^
|
I was 13 when it came out... but at that time.. starcraft didnt really interest me.. so I didn't pick it up until much much later... Got it for christmas I remember :D

Back then, Blizzard was still too small to get anywhere near the hype and anticipation that SC2 has.
Back then, I felt like, "Yea, this game looks pretty sweet, can't wait for it to come out."
Now it's like, "I've been waiting for this sequel for twelve mother f*cking years. If Gamestop screws up my delivery and I don't get it tomorrow, shit's gonna get real."
|
I was 12, and was super excited by the box art/description. When I finally got it, I played a lot of the campaign and vs comp, but often succumbed to using cheats. Usually, I played big defend against the onslaught 7v1 type games with unlimited resources. In fact, I kept doing this sort of mindless thing off and on into my adulthood. It's only been with beta that I've really challenged myself and play vs real people. I'm low level diamond, but that's only because of all the commentaries that I watch. It's too bad I didn't get into the real game of Starcraft, but I see another decade of play to make up for lost time with SC2!

I was the basically same age (11) and had already been playing Diablo 1 and WarCraft 2 since they came out (started at age 7). However I could not anticipate the release of SC1 simply because I never knew about it. The first time I saw the game was the day it came out at my friends house (but I had no idea it was supposed to come out) he told me it was from the same company as WC2 and Diablo and after playing a few games I promptly called my parents and went and got my own copy.
The rest of the story need not be explained, I've been an avid gamer ever since. I find it best not to get anxious about game releases though its coming out when its coming out, and as of right now tomorrow morning, I and all of NA will have their copy. I really don't see what the heavy anticipation is needed for, the game is coming, its going to be good, thinking about 'oh its only X hours till I can play' is only going to make the wait harder.

On SC1 they only ranked the top 1000 players in each region (at that time USEast, USWest, and so on) so 'bronze' back then would have to entail not being ranked in the top 1000, and having a win ratio at or below 50%. I really wish they would bring out a non-region specific league that ranks players from rank 1, to rank bottom (however many players are there) for pros to really compete against each other and show their stuff. Yes Blizzard has hinted at a pro league of sorts but it can't possibly come soon enough.

My dad bought me the game while we were on a trip to Vancouver. I sat in the truck mesmerized by the pictures, when I got home played enough of the campaign to figure out the cheats. Went online and immediately typed in all the cheats, I promptly got ling rushed :\. Then I went to UMS because the game was to hard otherwise

I was 12, so like a lot of other people, that game was a funny dividing line between halves of my life. I don't think I got it the day it came out, but I definitely had one of the "m" rated copies when there were 3 different box types, so I must have gotten it pretty early. Played the campaign about halfway through and then started multiplayer and never looked back. I remember people doing 3v1 and 4v1 "comp stomps" in order to get the rating needed to join leagues. Man, we were collectively terrible back then. Also, everyone would ally at the end of matches, even if they won. Now that is something you don't see these days!
I might have played a demo or something, not sure. Was really excited to play "command and conquer in space," and was blown away once I realized that the races actually played differently (as opposed to having different sized tanks and one or two different infantry units but otherwise being entirely similar). This should be fun!

To be honest my attitude to the release of SC2 is not one of anxiousness or anticipation but more of an attitude of 'its about god damn time', because well quite simply we've been waiting absolutely too long for a sequel to a game and after it being in four years of near vapor-ware status its really astonishing its actually coming out at all.
|
I found out about SC from some kid in 4th grade. I played singleplayer on a burned copy of his disc, then played the freeware TvT multiplayer (and learned what "stfu" meant). I eventually bought a copy and all my friends would 3v3 tvb nr20 it up.
For SC2 I've played the beta since march, been in diamond, and have been watching vods and the KOTB frantically since P2 ended, as well as arguing on forums about the game. And I'm going to a launch party (Day9's). So I'd say the two were pretty different.
|
I was 7 when SC1 came out 12 years ago haha. I didn't get into it until much later around when I was 12 or so, but even then it was mostly custom games like turret D and what not haha!
|
I was 12 years old when Starcraft came out. My Dad had the Starcraft demo that he had a hard time figuring out, so he asked me to play it and show him what to do. It was the first and only game that I literally could not stop playing and my Dad would watch me play it so he could understand it better. My Dad took me to Best Buy (or perhaps it was Circuit City) the day after it came out and bought two copies - one for him and one for me. I immediately logged on to battle.net with my six red bar, 56k connection. It was fun since nobody knew what the hell they were doing, myself included. I started off with terran because that is what I played in the demo but quickly fell in love with zerg.
Now I am waiting at work until it is 5 pm. I took tomorrow off. I will be getting my copy at midnight. I won't be able to recreate that nostaligc, amazing feeling that I got when I first started playing starcraft, but I will be doing the best I can! Friends, family and fiance have been advised not to bother me for the first 24 hours after release.
|
I was 5 when it was released, but I remember my brother getting it with my mom a few days after it was released.
|
Heh it's alot different for me. I got sc1 from my cousin who got 2 copies of it when he bought a new computer. I had no idea what it was, but was like "cool free game lol." Then I played it and it was awesome. So basically the difference is: sc1: no anticipation, sc2: OMG levels of anticipation.
|
My wait? I was like 5 or 6, had played WC2 and saw Starcraft on the shelf. I begged my mom to get it for me because it sounded like Warcraft and she bought it. Quite different than my years of anticipation for the sequel. Wish I hadn't gotten the lame Protoss cover though =/
|
I just remember being SUPER psyched as I was a War2 fan when SC1 was approaching. Geek4Life imo
|
well basically im just way more sexy now.
|
lol, I don't think I ever actually owned starcraft. I found a cd case so I could digitally download it about 3 years ago, and I never actually played it until about a year and a half ago.
so... it's a bit different from me trying ridiculously hard to get a beta key until I got one from pre-order, and then feeling slightly depressed every time the server went down.
|
Well, I first saw SC at a friend's house around a month after its release; I still remember the game my friend was playing zerg on the hunters and massing zerglings, hehe. I had never seen warcraft and SC was my introduction to an RTS game and of course it immediately consumed me. Being 13 and playing SC with 38K (?) modem through AOL was classic.
In contrast with SC2: I've been waiting for this game for who knows how long and honestly I don't think I've ever been so hyped with any other game. If only I didn't have these damn finals to worry about on Tues and Thurs!!!!

I'm ashamed to say that I didn't even know about starcraft 1 until after it came out. I ended up loving it though.

didnt know about sc1 till it came out for about a month. This time around, I'm all ready for the ladder thanks to beta practice :D
sc1 kicked AOE and CC red alert's butts at the time(my other top3 games at the time)

Didn't even know about starcraft as a kid. Played AoE2 over lan with my friends though. It never occurred to me to make more than1 of any production building, and I don't think it did to my friends either because our armies were about the same size.

I was playing runescape with my friend and one day he ditched me to play starcraft. And I was like, wth is starcraft, noob, play runescape.
Turns out I'm the bigger noob. I didn't play SC that much. But now I'm at work, and although I excited, I must finish this sh*t first.
