I'm wondering where many more notable SC2 players have gotten their names...

I'm mostly curious about:
DeMusliM (apparently his original bnet WC3 name was DeMusliMhobo or something t.t)
CauthonLuck
TheLittleOne
White-Ra

Any of these players care to shed some light?

I thought it had to do with what Nazgul and his team/clan at the time said to him at that one LAN. Pretty sure there's a thread about it.

They signed a tshirt for him with something along the lines of "Even small ones can accomplish big things".

This is all IIRC.

So one thing I must know, what's with the ID?

Made the nick because it looked cool, and at the time I saw Muslims as boxers such as Muhammad Ali - I was very young, the ladder name stuck - I do plan on changing it, dunno what to - as I have been invited to events with the demand to change it, or excluded entirely because of it.

CauthonLuck is from the Wheel of Time series. There's a character called Mat Cauthon who is ridiculously lucky.

The T-Shirt story is independent from the nickname, however by coincidence it has a striking similarity.
It was basically like this, we both shared one account in Supreme Commander at start and as we bought a 2nd copy we thought it would be nice if we had similar nicknames. At start it was TheBigBrother and TheLittleBrother but there was a clan called The Big Brothers already and I wanted to avoid any confusion with them, so we changed it a bit.

So TheBigOne, any plans of moving from Supreme Commander to SC 2: BTL?

You mean totally independent as in he didn't go by that nickname yet? Because then I know why Nazgul is so good, he can predict the future!

TBO and TLO, I like it One should always pay attention to the acronyms which can be made from your nickname.

It's unbelievably ridiculously that DeMuslim's name could offend anyone.

"Not Muslim" oooooh it's got the word muslim in it, can't say that!

Would any other religion care if his name was DeTHEIRRELIGION? Would anyone at all care?
Don't you see how the prohibition of the word causes more issues than the word itself?

CauthonLuck is from the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan. Cauthon = Mat Cauthon = a character in the books that has unusually good luck! He becomes famous in the book and thus people call ominously good luck "CauthonLuck"

If so, CauthonLuck is a pretty clever and catchy name. I believe in an interview he said he's in the casino business as well so it's very suitable.

There was an interview at one point of how the name "IdrA" originated, though I believe he said it doesn't hold any significant meaning. Wish I could find the link...

IdrA is that a joke? Haha - if so or if not - awesome.

When I first saw DeMusliM's I was just as curious about his playstyle as his name.

At first I was like The Muslim? Alright!

Then I was like, wait... anti-muslim? That bastard!

And then I read that it was an ode to the boxxers he knew when he was little... (and now mainstream muslims are rappers) and it's chill.

As a muslim I don't see it as offensive in any way, it's a good tag.

As for Idra: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idra

I know Idra looked jewish.

As for DeMuslim you clearly can tell he ment it as "The Muslim", not "Not Muslim". I still don't see how people could be offended.

And Christian is actually a fairly common first name so that wouldn't be offensive.

I'm obviously not a notable Starcraft 2 player, but my name's origin is simple: I actively thought of a new name and since I liked the saying "Deus Ex Machina" at the time, I decided that I wanted something in Latin.

Despite having studied (well, got it at school) Latin for three years, I butchered it: Theoretically it should be "InNomineDei", since that means In God's Name. I wanted to make it "Out of God's name" because I'm anti-religious, so the Ex is excusable (see what I did there...) but the Nomen / Nomine thing it pretty stupid. Then again, ExNomineDei sounds horrible.

Anwyay, I think names are made up at the spot a lot for most people, but a lot of people also actively think of a new screen name to pick and just base it on something they think sounds cool or has a nice theme. Pros were normal players once, so they just chose a name and stuck with it.

Look at the power rankings:

1. Flash 6. Kal
2. Effort 7. Fantasy
3. Jaedong 8. YoonJoong
4. BaBy 9. Midas
5. Snow 10. Shine[Kal]

Flash, Effors, BaBy, Snow, Fantasy and Shine are all just 'cool-sounding English names', especially for Asian people who in general love everything American (I am European btw), the other names are a lot more Korea-centric: Jaedong, YoonJoong, and possibly Kal are probably simple-sounding things that work in Korean well (and just sound awesome in English-speaking countries for the same reason English sounds cool in non-English speaking countries), and Midas, well, that name has popped up in books and tales quite often. Greek mythology is probably the oldest rendition of it, iirc.

tl;dr:

- Names chosen randomly (DeMuslim, etc.)
- Names chosen because they sound cool (Fantasy, Flash, etc.)
- Names chosen for a certain theme (TheBigOne, TheLittleOne, etc.)
Trying something wacky, expanding it, adjusting it, perfecting it -> Build order

'Strelok' literally means 'rifleman', 'archer', or 'shooter' in general, in Russian; I'm pretty sure he's from that area as well. I don't know whether the nickname has any additional significance.

For Artosis... it's art + the suffix -osis. He was really into arts and crafts when he was young. Actually he still is: when I went to Korea, he asked if I could bring some uncooked macaroni so that he could glue it to papers and make pretty designs.

Maybe I should rename myself "DeJew" and since I'm german it's even more offending to people

-.-

Rofl "DeJew". Dunno why that sounds soooo wrong.

CauthonLuck is abbreviated to Cluck because nobody knew how to pronounce Cauthon. As to why NonY hasn't changed even though nobody knows how to pronounce NonY either, I cannot say.

I believe it's pronounced "Kaw-Thin" and not "Kuh-Thon" like many pronounce it. If I had to take a guess, I would say your name was intended to be pronounced as "New-nie".

Yes, he is serious. It is impossible to get hold of uncooked macaroni in Korea. -osis means process, so it would mean 'Art process'.

Um... Jaedong and YoonJoong are their actual names.

How did Day9 get his name?

I was watching a daily the other day when my girlfriend strolled up and curiously watched a little bit of it with me. She asked how he picked Day9; I told her I didn't know.

Aren't some of the names like (T)Light not able to translate that well? We go sure his name is Light but the korean word means something a bit different? I am probably wrong but isn't that why a lot of the korean player names in english are very basic?

Bratok is the accurate english translation of the english term "bro".
Dimaga is just a different way to say his actual first name "Dima". That's like daying Jim instead of James... only it's not shorter.
Strelok means shooter in russian.
I remember this story that White-Ra was supposed to be the white (non-asian) version of Nal_ra, but I don't think it's actually true.

you dont actually believe that story do you.
How young did he have to be to think all muslims are boxers, especially in the light of all the british muslim tensions that have arisen in the last couple of years.

I know I'm bumping a very old thread here, but I ran across something I had to ask about and I remembered there were a couple of threads on this and I figure it's better to bump since this is not thread worthy by itself. (though it is confusing/awesome)

Anyway is Losira named after the Star Trek character of the same name? This is really bugging me, there's no information in either liquipedia about his name. I've tried googling this and surprisingly cannot find anyone who has brought up this link before.

Does anyone know for sure? Am I the only one who thinks this is completely awesome?

Lol.

Dear Losira,

Are you named after the commander of a super secret military outpost whose commander configured a defense computer that almost killed Kirk right before her entire race was wiped out by a deadly plauge a few thousand years ago? It was in a cheesy 1960s American Sci Fi show.
Thanks.

I like the way the walls go out. Gives you an open feeling. Firefly's a good design. People don't appreciate the substance of things. Objects in space. People miss out on what's solid.

First post. \o/

Anyway, about white-ra, I do believe it's because he likes the colour white, and Ra was the sun god for the ancient egyptians or something similar.

I have to ask this though. As a swede I've reacted to something about ThorZaIN's nick. Because if you take away the capital letters, the word "hora" is left, which in swedish plain and simple mean "whore". No trolling. Does anyone know more about this? Is it even intentional? It's been boggling my mind for so long, but I've never know where to ask, nor how to google it. ^^

Thank god for this necro. I read on liquipedia he retired the name because of mispronunciation issues so I've been scared to say it out loud haha.

Because he used to be Ra from the Egyptian God, and then he was in some clan in BW called White-Ra. But because those fitted so well together he decided to use that name.

I dunno about Ret but I seem to recall IdrA saying that he got his name from a bastardized version of someone from Hindu mythology I think.

I could be wrong, but I don't think I am.

As far as I know, you're right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indrajit

That's why he's Idrajit on Twitter.

Idra said once on his stream that his name was actually based on the Indian deity Indra but that he accidentally misspelled it.

For those asking about Artosis and his name take a look at his Real Talk episode with JP.

At 20:45 Artosis mentions how he started out with a name that was something like "Artmage" and how for a time that was his main name. Then, I believe its through a friend or something but he comes across the name of a KoRn song (from the Follow the Leader album) called "Cameltosis" and really likes the second half of that name. So he combines the first half of Artmage and Cameltosis and he gets...dun dun dun: Artosis.

EDIT: Its actually pretty cool how early in his life Artosis realizes that he wants to make a career out of video games in some way and that part of doing that successfully will involve having an original and recognizable name. I highly recommend watching his Real Talk episode

I thought I was hearing Arcmage but for some reason I couldn't reconcile the name combination without hearing it as "Artmage". Silly me. This chronic is really top notch though so you can't blame a negro.

Or can you?
