Thanks to Nade for the banner!

So, I absolutely love the potential of the SC2 Galaxy Editor. To be completely honest, I never liked UMS that much in WC3 or even in SC1, but from what I've seen in SC2 it is impossible not to be super stoked about the potential.

I am making this thread for a couple reasons:

1) To review cool UMS maps that I find with a quick video, description, review, and link to where you can download it.
2) For others to share their UMS maps and to request I review a specific map.
3) Because the Galaxy Editor is going to be crazy!

Remember, this will be updated anytime I make a new review. Lets get this started!

1) Mara Sara Outlaws

I am going to start testing cool looking UMS maps. The map editor has so much potential, might as well start now!

Map Name: Mar Sara Outlaws

Husky Rating: 6/10
Reason: I give this map a 6 because the map editor is so new and this was quickly made to show some of the BASIC stuff you can do with it. Quite a few cut scenes for such a new map editor as well as some pretty simple controls. Well made for how new it is.

Pros: Good basic idea. Easy to follow and understand. Pretty fun considering its the first third person game I've ever played made on an RTS engine.

Cons: Super short. Overall lacking much content (due to how new the editor is).


2) Supply Depot Tetris v1.1

Here is my second UMS test. I am going to be doing these a lot. There are so many cool maps!

Map Name: Supply Depot Tetris v1.1

Husky Rating: 7/10
Reason: In it's current stage there is still much room for improvement. However, to do this much coding in a few short days should be commended and overall the look of the game is great.

Pros: It's Tetris! Released very quickly and the bulk of the project is done. Nice score screen, 'next piece', controls, etc. This version definitely has a huge start on any other SC2 Tetris map out there.

Cons: Still lots of bugs. Can rotate blocks when you shouldnt be able to. Game resets when you're on a new level (unlike 'real' Tetris). Sometimes blocks go out of bounds. I WANT TO MENTION that every bug I've found he is aware of and fixing.


3) Top Down Shooters v7

It is time for my third UMS test

Top Down Fighters is a.... well.... top down shooter of sorts. Reminds me of the old school NES games that I grew up with as a kid.

Husky Rating: 6.5/10

Reason: Now that the map editor has been out a couple weeks I'm going to start being a lot more tough on my score rating. For that reason it receives a slightly lower mark than my last review.

Pros: Very old school feel. Very responsive controls and simple interface. Super easy to understand and follow. Point...Click... Boom!

Cons: Super short. A little too easy at this point. Camera doesnt really keep your guy centered so there is lots of dead space behind where you're moving.


4) Big Blue

UMS review number 4! I decided to stick with the arcade theme again as they are classics.

Big Blue is a classic top down view flying shooter game. I'm sure there is a word for them but I always forget. It has the exact same feel as all those games we played growing up as a kid.

Husky Rating: 6/10

Reason: I want to be honest about why I gave it a 6. It all comes down to content, enjoyment, replay value, and completion. I'll talk about that below.

Pros: This game feels JUST like ones you'll play in the arcade. Very easy to understand and the controls are great. The map as a whole has TONS of potential and I cant wait to see it fully develop. VERY strong foundation for a super epic map! Read the cons carefully!

Cons: There just isnt much content atm. The first 3 bosses are Overlords/Overseers and the first 10 minutes of mobs are one of two skins. There is only one type of weapon. Only 3 ships. BUT, all of this stuff is a work in progress. This game would easily reach an 8 had I reviewed it a month from now. I am super excited about this map I just simply have to rate it for its current state.

Wow, it's pretty great to see what can happen in just a short week. There really is going to be some huge stuff with this. I can't wait until they can be published.

sc1 ums helped keep battle.net alive imo

anyway, i hope they do something adding background in the game. it kinda sucks that you can have this well made map and the backdrop is just black

I don't think reviewing UMS would really work right now. The editor is so new and most maps are WIP. Maps are currently unable to be played in customs as well.

I think it would be best to review once all features in the editor are available. Though, some of the newest ums maps are totally kick-ass

The place that I have been going to is sc2mapster.com. They have a channel on freenode of the same name.

They've already created a working WoW UI that you can create for yourself. People who have Macs can also playtest the multiplayer maps with a program they made that auto-switches the .SC2Map files with whatever you are hosting in the lobby. If you and everyone else do it in the Lobby together then you can play the map.

Galaxy Tower Defense

I found this on SC2Mapster, and it's pretty fun! I can send you instructions on how to fix localized data issues (i.e. everything shows up as Param/...) It was made with the EU version, so yeah.

Instructions on how to fix the Localization <<< Alternatively, you can just click this link. It's VERY easy to do, and you shouldn't be deterred by having to do it; it takes maybe a minute for your first time.

Bronze skipping straight to Diamond in 40 games retail release. Bnet 2.0 ladder really takes it's sweet time to think about that league placement.

Hi Husky, really like the videos, but I have one suggestion/criticism.\

When you are going over a map, can you please avoid using a weird voice or saying "blah blah blah" when reading a dialogue. The map author has probably put hard work into dialogue or considers the dialogue an important part of the map. It is often very difficult to come up with dialogue for roleplaying games that doesn't kill the mood of the game.

It's just a minor thing, but a lot of UMS roleplaying maps are made or broken by the maturity and grammar of in-game dialogue. To gloss over it or read it out loud in a silly voice kind of works against what you're trying to do with the videos, methinks. In that first Mar Sara video, it felt like you were making fun of the map at times.

But that's probably just me and i'm about to get hated on. But overall, me likey and look forward to more!
