The lack of formation buttons gives the game a higher skill ceiling, the guy who can manage to keep his units in formation and separated is going to beat the one who can't. Starcraft 1 made auto-formations with magic boxes, but suddenly that would remove "skill"? StarCraft 1 never had auto-formations. You have to manually make a formation and apply the magic box. At least that one had more skill.

I'm more talking about how people in this topic seems to like blobs because it forces one to position your units properly yet in most topic about why Starcraft 2 is the worse game ever people mention the blobbing of units. Starcraft 1 had more automation in this regard than Starcraft 2.

And magic box itself required some precision to use and the casual players didn't even know it really even existed, try creating formations like you can in some other games in SC1 and keeping it in that form with magic box alone and see that its nothing compared to those.

so the multicasting, automining, unlimited selection, and auto surround would survive the same arguments people are mostly making here?

I'm just one of those people who likes to position my army really well and it is so gay when they just revert to blob mode especially when it's range units. or the pathing just decides to have them walk around uselessly at the back of a group. Obviously, I don't have very good control. Maybe I just need much more practice, but I've definitely seen vod's of high level gamers struggling with this sort of thing as well. If you're positioning your army close to the enemy you can at least lessen the glob blow in two ways: Either seperately attack move chunks of your army, or the easier way, attack move your army to the far side of the screen. Units will try to walk a line from where they stand to where you click. If you click attack close to them they'll all clump onto your mouse cursor. If you click at the edge of the screen they'll wall walk pretty much in formation until they get close to said edge. Not optimal, but it's what some people do to move their roach line closer to the enemy so the guys in the back can fire without clumping the entire army up into a ball.
