I'm into vintage games, lords of the realm is one of my all time favorites. I was noticing how in combat when you have a group of 16 archers they automatically form in nice rows of 8 facing the enemy and when you move them, as long as you send them forward by clicking ahead of them centered on there formation, they maintain there rows quite nicely. I think something similar would be nice in SC2 instead of the "unit blobs", my idea is to have a "lock formation" button on grouped units, where you could make an arc out of your units and put melee's in front and long range in the back then lock the formation and be able to approach your opponents army maintaining the formation you created. It would make proper flanking very effective as well. It will also need a break formation or charge option as well. Curious to see what people think, I can't see this as being very difficult to implement seeing as lords of the realm is almost 2 decades old. It may also need some way of turning the formation 90 degrees as well. I hope this isn't to vague, but this or something similar would add a unit composition/maneuvering element to the game. It'd definitely be more realistic, as this is how real combat forces tend to engage. What do you think o wise people of teamliquid?

No, we the SC players appreciate micro and having to work towards getting the perfect concave/formation. This would make such things far too easy and take away far too much from the competitive side of the game.

Also make auto hit and run and auto focus fire, so StarCraft wont require any skill at all !

so your happy with unit blobs, well my thinking in this was that there already is auto surround and the units somewhat form a concave on there own when ranged units attack this would give you the option to take the time to properly form your army to give you an edge against someone who didn't bother. I see your point though, it not being very starcrafty.

Did you read what he said?

The lack of formation buttons gives the game a higher skill ceiling, the guy who can manage to keep his units in formation and separated is going to beat the one who can't. You want a formation button? Use your brain and your hands

oh, the possibilities..

You know you can try using more than one hotkey for your units... Micro is also a good idea =.=

Didn't we, the SC players, have magic boxes?

We don't want the game to play for us, we want to play the game.. Formations are not StarCraftish in any way, and makes the game too easy, and ruins any attempt at micro. This isn't age of empires

a quick way to make formations would be really awesome imo. c&c3 had a fast and flexible system, but of course its blasphemous to suggest sc steal interface ideas from other games.

What, I could swear everyone and their dog were moaning about how Starcraft 2 forms blobs of units. Starcraft 1 made auto-formations with magic boxes, but suddenly that would remove "skill"?
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.

StarCraft 1 never had auto-formations. You have to manually make a formation and apply the magic box. At least that one had more skill.

I'm more talking about how people in this topic seems to like blobs because it forces one to position your units properly yet in most topic about why Starcraft 2 is the worse game ever people mention the blobbing of units. Starcraft 1 had more automation in this regard than Starcraft 2.

And magic box itself required some precision to use and the casual players didn't even know it really even existed, try creating formations like you can in some other games in SC1 and keeping it in that form with magic box alone and see that its nothing compared to those.

so the multicasting, automining, unlimited selection, and auto surround would survive the same arguments people are mostly making here?

Formations were pretty useless in war3x, I imagine it would be a little more effective in sc2.. but you can really make your own formations, you just need to avoid the 1a syndrome, and move to the more, shinier, 1a 2a 3a.

Formations would make the problem with 2 big armies a-moving into eachother even worse. If you set a formation for your army beforehand, you could literally just a-move and look away and not do anything.

I guess i just get annoyed when my units seem to just do whatever the hell they want, or when i take the time to make a concave and then the opponent baits half the line and it feels like I'm fighting the opponent for control of my own army, especially when force fields are involved.I try to use hold position but that can be annoying to deal with. I'm just one of those people who likes to position my army really well and it is so gay when they just revert to blob mode especially when it's range units. or the pathing just decides to have them walk around uselessly at the back of a group. Obviously, I don't have very good control. Maybe I just need much more practice, but I've definitely seen vod's of high level gamers struggling with this sort of thing as well.

I've played lords of the realm as well, and I do agree that formations are a very good addon for it, and also in AoE, but I don't want SC to be that simplified. A lot of the skill that sc2 requires is based around being able to manipulate your formation constantly before battle, and during battle. That's something that makes the game tasteful and should be kept that way.

I would support this idea if and only if I can create a long and narrow formation that can penetrate my opponent's defenses. It would be an ideal formation because it can move in and out narrow chokes easily while the head of the formation retains the ability to attack inside the choke, thus making the assault a fruitful endeavor. Hell, I would probably just run around the map showing off my cool formation.

Although I probably woudn't do this with zerg, roaches look too much like crabs.

To be honest, I don't think a lock formation would be necessary for SC2. Besides making concaves and flanks(which with auto-surround and multiple control groups is quite easy) I don't see any real use besides running into your opponent's base with a pair of boobs attacking them.

If you're positioning your army close to the enemy you can at least lessen the glob blow in two ways: Either seperately attack move chunks of your army, or the easier way, attack move your army to the far side of the screen. Units will try to walk a line from where they stand to where you click. If you click attack close to them they'll all clump onto your mouse cursor. If you click at the edge of the screen they'll wall walk pretty much in formation until they get close to said edge.

Not optimal, but it's what some people do to move their roach line closer to the enemy so the guys in the back can fire without clumping the entire army up into a ball.
