I posted this on blizz forums also-
Rather than force the player to hold down ALT to display health bars or change the settings to have them on all the time, I think they should make ALT an on/off switch i.e. pressing turns health bars on or off.
There are a lot of times health bars are useful but sometimes they're just downright disruptive (not to mention they're aesthetically very displeasing).
Holding down alt when you need to micro just makes your job more difficult and I don't really see any point to it. There's no downside to making it an on/off switch.
|
there is an option like taht already in game, go to options -> game play options -> always show health bars ( i think its like that)
Cumps
|
That's not what he means, TArujo. He wants it to be a switch instead of a hold. The option you're referring to he already referred to where it keeps health bars on indefinitely (unless you hold alt?).
I completely agree with this change. Hitting ALT for example would be a lot easier than holding it down while microing.
|

|
Either make it an option (check box) where you can set alt to be what it is now, or have it toggle health bars
or have it be a completely separate button. In HoN, alt is the same as SC2, but <'> toggles health bars
|
Agreed.
Since I can't even see buildings burning, I'd like the HP bars in the first 5 minutes of the game (before they get cluttered, etc.) - going through settings takes too long in a fast paced RTS =(
|
they really need to make the hp bars smaller and remove the grids. i would love to have them on for microing purposes, but they're so ugly :S
|
Hmm... I've never really needed anything like that in WC3. Could someone please also check if [ and ] buttons, for your/enemy health bars only, are present in SC2?
|
I really want this idea. The health bars are extremely useful to use roaches properly with burrow, but for the most of the rest of the game, they are extremely disruptive. Having 50 zerglings with health bars is utterly pointless. Having marine blobs covered with health bars just makes it harder to see their unit makeup.
|
i have health bar on the units i select only, i totally recomend that cause its like sc1 and when i wanna see enemy army hp i hold in alt

Having units selected is not always useful. For example with roaches, if you have them all selected, you can't just burrow one. You'd have to select them all, wait, select one, burrow, select them all again. With bars on all the time, you just select burrow, select burrow. But I don't want them on all the time.

It would be awesome to have an option to
a) show HP bars for units only ( all time ) b) shows HP bars for units all time and buildings on press ;o

The only time you need HP bars on units is in-battle.
|
That would be a nice feature. It would be more convenient than either switching it on/off in the options are holding down alt.
|
It would be awesome if you could customize which units show health bars.
For example: there is absolutely no reason to need to see health bars on your interceptors... they're just distracting.
|
Health bars should only show for units that are damaged. No point in showing the health bar of a unit at 100%. It is just unnecessary clutter.
|
Would be very logical to add this feature.

What about removing health bars from the game? just like in bw o_o

I think it'd be pretty rad to have a toggle as well as some sort of auto-show thing.
I like having selected on but I think having something that shows the health bar of units taking damage and having it fade after not taking damage for some time. Or something along those lines.
|
its already in the game, alt button like what lynx said.
|
I fully agree with OP here. In early game I want all the health bars on, especially in ZvZ skirmish of roaches. But later on because the bars are so big and high contrast they are a huge clutter and distraction.
I also want a toggle for the unit halos. I don't want to see a lighter halo around where my cursor is hovering, I only wanna see a halo around units that are actually selected. This extra highlight halo is just annoying, confusing, and cluttering.

good idea, and should be easy to add. default could easily be caps lock key

YOU MEAN THE BILLY MAYS KEY?
|
hold alt to see the healthbars, release do hide them... what's the problem with that ? if u don't like it, don't use them, if u like them, use it.
A good idea would be to make the bar smaller when you zoom in, in a some sort of BarSize x Zoom ratio. or just to make a little bit smaller. Anyway i don't see a problem with them.

reading comprehension guys. he wants a way to toggle health bars on and off so that he doesnt have to hold alt to see them, but he doesnt want health bars on all the time because that'd be annoying

This. Some of you guys don't understand what the word TOGGLE means. The OP wants something that acts like the CAPSLOCK key. Don't be dumb. ALT and CAPSLOCK have completely different behaviors. Learn the difference between those two keys, and you might understand his post.

When your watching replays there is actually a toggle (h key). So it's obviously already been done and it just depends whether they want it for actual games or not.

I was going to suggest this too. think this would be a better feature. Even if it was switch, it would still clutter up the screen when used. This would make it usable even in large battles, and even with interceptors.
|
Another thing that would help would just be to make the health bars a bit less obnoxious in the first place.
|
well, no toggle in the release version either.
digging through the threads around here, i thought it wouldnt be that bad to revive this thread and to releave this thread (id=137277) from non topic posts.
it seems, that many players dislike the health bar system as it is. imho, adding more options should fix this. i agree with the op and want to extend the idea to the following:
- get rid of the dropdown menus - unit health bar options should contain these checkboxes: ** on by default (conveniance checkbox for game startup) ** toggle instead of hold (as suggested by op) ** show selected (** show damaged?) - same thing separately for building health bars - additionally, a slider for health bar transparency would simplify the problem a lot.
with this set of options, players as well as commentators can adjust the health bars for a good compromise between visual and informational needs.
note that this would also avoid the need of an extra key for observers/commentators (H)
what do you think of that?^^

This sounds like a good Idea! thx

They're looking into this. They hadn't thought of the toggle, but said they'd look at it: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=132653
Guest-275: There is only Always, Selected, and Normal for Unit life bars. Will there ever be an option where Alt acts as an on/off switch for unit life bars instead of having to hold it constantly to see life bars outside of the units you've selected?
DustinB:: We can certainly look into that.
|
They should just offer multiple health bar options the current ones are too fat imo
|
i have problems with the "always on" option myself. as i am a bit color blind, i mostly depend on contrast to see wich units are on the field. with all these high contrast health bars its impossible for me to see the units :-/
(btw i also have problems to find the red nuke dot on green or high contrast surfaces... quite annoying o_O)
|
i completely agree with the thread starter: that would be the perfect solution. sometimes i want them to be permanent, sometimes i want them to be gone, so a switch-like key would be perfect (cba to go to the menu to change it when a key combination is easier and faster =) )
|
Ye, I agree, would help out alot.

Idea: option to only show health for units who don't already have full health.

I actually like the basis for this idea; can we change that to Show hp bars for units who have recently taken damage? That way a health bar pops up when your unit is getting shot? I often have a tough time figuring out what exactly is getting shot at in bigger fights.
|
I think there actually might be a button for this? It's something like backslash or backspace, something in that area.

there are 2 additional keys for the health bar. one shows only enemy health bars and the other shows only allied ones. but the alt key and these 2 are all just hold-to-see and no toggle ^^
