This just in:

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere. I had a quick glance through the SC2 forums but thought it better to risk double-posting.
|
it applies to all users of affected cards that use the stock fan profile regardless of game
edit: nm read what was actually quoted and Blizzard covered that

Happened to me. Not happy clearly, but my new, faster, stronger graphics card arrives in 11 hours.
|
This destroyed my GTX 280. RMA will take about a week. Since my mobo has no onboard video thats about 7 days on my phone for even internet.

Yeah, I've been seeing stories like this popping up on several different forums, with other similar experiences.
Definitely a warning that everyone should pay attention to.

I sympathise, It toasted my 8800 GTS, and RMA is going to take about 2 weeks, and I cannot live without at least a PC to type on for 2 days, let alone not being able to access all my uni work, hence why i bought a shiny new ATiasus card, since my 8800 was getting on a bit anyway, but I thought I could last another 6 months before I upgraded.
oh well.

It's not like it's that hard to go into rivatuner or MSI afterburner and turn the fan up to stop it from overheating... it's not like the driver physically makes the GPU hotter, it just fucks with the fan profiles (and sc2 has 100% gpu usage on menus)

Yeah, but you would only really do that AFTER you knew about this, which, in many people's cases (as you can see if you read the previous posts) is already too late.
|
toasted my gtx 280..... and I bought it used so no warranty....had to buy a gtx 260. Happy with the new card but still
|
Wow. Wonder how many people are gonna be effected by this.
|
If Nvidia drivers blow up your card, why do you stay with Nvidia?
|
Don't throw out the toasted card, I'm sure either nvidia will be forced to give some compensation to people who this happened to, or there will be a class-action lawsuit or SOMETHING. Seems like quite a huge fuckup for them not to have to answer for it somehow.
|
Oh man, NVidia seriously need to up their game lately.
|
I'm shocked by the sheer number of reports I'm hearing of dead cards. It literally looks like they just didn't do any QA before they shipped those drivers. It seems to have just affected pretty much every card they make. That boggles my mind. I almost installed that crap on my own computer, and it was only my own laziness that saved me.
|
I installed it as well but luckily I installed the older drivers to fix aspect ratio for starcraft.
|
ugh fucking sucks for the people who lost their cards because of this...
Nvidia trying to shit out drivers now that ATi Catalyst is gaining steam
|
Brand new, same day I got my Gigabyte GTX260OC...
I thought my ram or video card was busted... because what are the chances it was the driver? Well... ya...
happy ending is card survived, and I am back to the last driver. 196.21 Not with out a good bit of yelling at my monitor, tho.

You act like it's soooooo hard to predict the future. If you're too lazy to absently gaze into your crystal ball you deserve a fried video card imho

blew my gtx 260.... small price we pay for beta. Anyway, please spread the words around to prevent further damage.

If you're actually serious you are an idiot

:D i burned my 8800 gts 320mb and they don't have another laying around so maybe i'll get a 9800gtx or something as they usually send something comparable haha this is why i buy nvidia for the good rma when an old card that should die does. but for the week i guess i could play off my laptop
|
Shit! This is really awful. I hope all the people with their burned cards can get their manufacturers of those cards to repair it. Always been a loyal fan of Nvidia since the Geforce 1 era. Now i am considering ATI to be on my next PC when SC2 actually goes gold.
|
Holy shit! I'm glad I checked out TL before logging onto SC2. You have my gratitude.

That is terrible for nVidia, don't they quality test their drivers? How can they miss something like that?

The same way MicroSoft missed 65000 bugs in Windows when they released it...
|
same happened to my 8600 gt -.- t_T
|
Sorry if im asking a plain retarded qn, but here goes: how do u check for ur nvidia version? Just go into control panel and see it?
|
Um I installed these drivers yesterday, and my computer crashed (or rather wouldnt start again after I turned it off after install)...
although I read on some forum that just changing power socket (in the wall) for your power cable could solve this... so I did, and it actually worked.
Should I still revert to my old drivers? The problem for me was that with those drivers I couldnt play SC2, the game crashed every time I tried to start it. As it is now, it actually works fine.

same happened to a friend of mine who plays WOW and has a beta key to SCII. He decided to give my friend who plays only SC his beta key lol. I wonder if I should show this to him...
|
Another reason to buy ATI cards.

If you're running Vista:
press F1 > type "video card" > click "Video cards: frequently asked questions" > click "Click to open Display Settings." > click "Advanced Settings..." > click "Adapter" > click "Properties" > click "Driver"
You'll see "Driver Version". I think that's it.
