Because people at the top of the divisions below platinum look like they have many more ELO points then anybody else. I'm really starting to not get divisons ![]() It's like, I see people in Gold Division with 1400 pts which would put you near the top of the platinum division I'm in. What the hell is their purpose? If it's just to make people think "oh I'm ranked #10!!" then that's fucking retarded - I want to see where I'm ranked overall and I want to be able to see who is at the top -_- Is there a need for some seasons to pass before the system becomes accurate? I just don't get it ;p

I just don't get it ;p I don't have a beta key, so I'm only drawing on what I've watched of streams/screen shots/blizz con, but as far as the 1400 ELO in Gold League being higher than platinum league leaders thing goes, I think that the ELO rating is not an absolute ELO of the entire BNet population, but rather an ELO for those within their respective leagues. Since there are more plays in Gold League, it is to be expected that the highest rated players have higher ELOs than those in a smaller league, for example Platinum. Similarly, if I am not mistaken, all players start out at 1000 ELO, regardless of what league they start in, but that of course does not mean that they are rated as equals. From this analysis, I would then postulate that the purpose of the leagues is to separate players into group of similar skill level for ladder play (as one would assume), and that the ten placement games you play are probably much more accurate at placing players than many people are currently assuming, causing very few players to need to me moved between leagues. (In ideal condition it would pinpoint your skill to within .1% of the total population of players. This is more likely in practice closer to 1% or 2%, but with five leagues, you just have to be within 20% to get into the right league.) + Show Spoiler + Note that if any of the assumptions I make are wrong then what I'm saying makes no sense. I'm basing this on limited beta information, info from blizz con and my knowledge of statistics and competitive ranking systems. So if you play ladder games with people in different leagues or you don't start at 1000 ELO or whatever, tell me that I'm a stupid noob with no beta key and I should shut up. If this is the case, I apologize in advance. ![]()

I just don't get it ;p What I don't get is how Dayvie is ~95-5 and only at 1200. There seem to be weird things going on with the rating between different divisions. Maybe there's that weird rating loss stuff going on? Like the game tries to move him up to "pro" but that league doesn't exist so he just gets a point reset? =/

I just don't get it ;p The point of divisions (atleast theoretically) are a couple of things. First, so it gives people a reachable goal. Obviously if you're competing against 10000 other people, its pointless to try to be one of the top people, but if you're simply competing against 50, more than possible. Blizzard has stated they would have end season tournaments where the top 8 or so of each division and the person who won that would go on to compete the other winners of the other divisions. Second, its so people don't have to mass games to be in one of the top spots which is what happens in wc3 ladder. Those are two points I remember blizzard saying when they were discussing this, perhaps there are more, we'll see how it works out.

If you get moved up a division, it should be because some algorithm thought -hey this guy is playing above his skill division, we should move him so it doesn't unbalance gold or silver or whatever and make it unfair for the rest of the people-. Whether or not its actually working properly, eh I guess thats up for speculation.

That's fine, now give me a total rank as well - I mean, I'm already playing with people from outside my divison so there's nothing stopping them from having an overall ranking as well.
