![]() Avatar is a band from Gothenburg, Sweden. They are also Starcraft fans This is what I wrote in the other thread: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.press2play.tv/spel/03/avatar-tva-av-vara-latar-handlar-om-starcraft In this interview 2 of the band members say in swedish that they are huge Starcraft buffs and will play SC2 directly when it comes out. They also mention that they did one SC song on their previous record and a SC2 song on their new record. Haha, the interviewer lady asks them: "So what are the Starcraft-songs about?" The guy to the right answers: Zerg. The only "team" (keke) you can play, and be. The guy to the right goes: "protoss". The guy to the left (singer) grabs the mic again and says: "Thank god I'm writing the lyrics then." They conclude by saying that the songs are a tribute to all the fellow Starcraft nerds out there.

It's interesting to see how others interpret lyrics. I spent awhile looking around trying to find the lyrics for the song since a lot of people in the YouTube comments were asking for it. I thought it would have been on darklyrics.com, but sadly their most recent album (the s/t) isn't up yet. I've listened to this song a lot the last few days, so I guess I'll give my opinion on what the lyrics are as well. Who knows, maybe we'll eventually figure them out, haha. (instead of rewriting the whole thing, I decided to just bold what I've changed in your lyrics) Hear them marching But not under roof of law We fall in line and We march as one I answer God The God of war And by the night I was ready Now we're breathing, we breath as one we don't speak but, we share a thought we share a hunger we share a hate And in the end, we will share death So far we travel through your nightmares The Swarm will live and die for her The Queen Of Blades Now we see her The wings that carry us [...] She is the answer She is the call She is the scent we'll follow Getting stronger With scent between the stars, This human fear, OH rotting stink(?) She knows their kind She knows their path And on this path is our victory So far we travel through your nightmares The Swarm will live and die for her the Queen Of Blades Hear us marching So many hooves and claws We fall in line and We march as one We answer God The God of war And by the night we were ready Call on the stars The swarm has been reborn One million roars risen But it hurts No more shame (these next 3 lines I believe he says 'No machine, oh no machine, no machine ... but you could very well be correct too, that's just what I hear) I'll know no shame No more shame With my (?) Um 3 of those 4 bands you mentioned are metalcore bands (or used to be anyways) Please don't ever put Amon Amarth in the same category as All that remains again please lol But I kind of don't like Avatar really either. This song is kind of cool because it's about Starcraft but otherwise the production is weak the shrieking at the beginning without music is horrible, and they flirt alot with the mainstream, making them quite trendy. Spotify in Sweden had a huge promo campaign with Avatar and every 10 minutes you would hear a Avatar commercial.

It's really no different from bands like In Flames, just with a little more cheesy chorus, less power chords (less any kind of chord really) and as much as I hate to admit it, more technically advanced playing. The only thing more difficult about In Flames is the strange tunings they insist on playing in, the same goes for Dark Tranquillity. People who categorize it further than that are just being snobby purists for the sheer sake of it - anyone with musical background can see that. Um, no there's a big difference. Those bands come from a hardcore background and then started playing a hybrid known as metalcore. It's not the "same thing" as melodic death metal.

Three out of four of those bands aren't close to being melodeath, and the fourth is questionable. And coincidentally, four out of those four bands are frankly rather bad, though I do enjoy a few of their songs :/.

Believing that that had anything to do with Gothenburg metal just shows how uninformed and wrong you are. Haha. Next you're going to be telling me that it sounds nothing like early At The Gates, which, is the only true Gothenburg band. Genres develop. This is just typical (from my 1 minute listen) heavily gay modern Gothenburg. Maybe they developed into a less gay style after my short listening span forced me to close the window. EDIT: I wouldn't want to not provide factual wikipedia evidence: Deleted Avatar wikipedia article Avatar is a melodic death metal band from Sweden, founded in 2001. More interesting is that they're actually from Gothenburg. Wikipedia on Melodic Death: Melodic death metal (also referred to as melodeath) is a subgenre of death metal which combines the melody of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) with the intensity of death metal. The genre is also known as Gothenburg metal, a reference to the city in Sweden where it originated. Originally the genre combined the harmony style and groove melodies of heavy metal with the harsh thrashing sound and vocals of death metal. Later the genre evolved due to many different influences, a notable evolution in the genre being the addition of keyboards. Melodic death metal contains more melodic guitar riffs, melodic solos, and acoustic guitar work than traditional death metal. EDIT #2: I realize you might not understand my point. Let me clarify: 1.) Avatar is a melodic death metal band 2.) Melodic death is also referred to as Gothenburg. By the common sense axiom, it holds that Avatar is Gothenburg. QED
