I'm trying to get very good at this game so I am overhauling my hotkey setup. Previously I used WASD but now I am trying to decide whether to use Middle Mouse/Drag scroll, Edge scroll, or even stick with WASD
Drag Scroll - change from Middle Mouse to D (under left hand middle finger): Pro: don't have to move mouse to the edge of the screen, so much easier. Con: Mouse ends up being physically displaced and you have to readjust its position. Also, have to use 1 key for scrolling.
Edge Scroll Pro: don't have to use any keys, so you can have an extra camera or CG hotkey. Con: I find it very difficult to use. Forces your mouse to jump to the edge to scroll, but you end up overshooting, and have to pull your mouse back to the middle, which wastes time.
WASD, or even better, ASDF (vi editor style): Pro: camera movement is independent of the mouse, allowing for much easier movement. Con: forces use of 4 keys which could have been camera hotkeys.
Are their any pros who use drag or keyboard scroll? I'm probably going to go with edge scrolling for now, since that's what most pros use. What sensitivity should I use?

But if you key scroll, doesn't that mean you lock 4 keys, that can be used for commands, such as production and abilites?

hi,
My experience on mouse binding: I change middle mouse to center camera on selection. Scroll up to cam 1, scroll down to left click. Previous to warp gate and before next botton to nexus.
Now: my mouse a razer 60€ is almost dead after 6 months of intensive play. next and previous botton are dead and middle mouse almost. So now i have a hard time to change my use to another key.
Advice: don't over use your mouse bouton or chose rare action like idle workers or something else. Otherwise you will change your mouse every 6 month those bouttons are not design to be used that much.
The very good thing is scroll down for camera. But it needs a third software so i am not sure it is very legal. My advice: choose hotkeys as best as possible in long term of use not because there are easy to reach.

You could always use something like autohotkey to make D actually be middle mouse button. That way your mouse will not be displaced. Blizzard has commented several times on these kinds of changes and as long as there is no conditioning to them (ie pressing 1 button only does 1 action) they do not consider it againts ToS. This goes for WoW, Starcraft and all their other games. Note however that tournaments would not allow something like this, so you could only use it from home.

I actually have trouble binding mousewheel up / down to anything. How do you guys do that? (I'd like to put the camera swings to the left / right there. For scroll im using edge cause I need the keys for production / camera / control groups.

What I do on my blackwidow, is rebind my capslock to middle-mouse or equivalent. I assign a combination to it that corresponds with the move camera.

pm me if you want the tird party software for mouse blinding

Most pros just use edge scroll, camera hotkeys, and the mini map. I vaguely remember from watching Gumiho's stream that his mouse scroll speed was set below 50%. I think Stephano's is around 30%. These guys make heavy use of camera hotkeys, and their mouse speed is so low that they can click a spot on the mini-map with extreme precision. Isn't there already enough going on for your left hand, such as camera hotkeys, control groups, shift+control+tab usage, and all the command/ability keys? WASD would be too much on top of that.

lucifron uses the drag scroll method with mousewheel click
edit: rebinding it to a different key might be a cool idea. never thought of that. I use it to set my camera hotkeys at the start, but later in the game I find it very annoying to click the wheel. I am thinking of using spacebar for it. the standard function of spacebar becomes useless later in the game anyway, because too much stuff is happening at once.

For years I have had my side mouse mouse bound as my drag scroll.
It is simply amazing.
Being able to press a button with my mouse hand thumb and then control the camera feels so RIGHT.

I've never paid that much attention to these details when professionals are playing from of Point of view style. Don't you think between the combination of all your hotkeyed units and base structures and camera locations that you wouldn't need to scroll much at all? I essentially don't do anything other than click the minimap and use cameras + doubletapping hotkeys.
I use the core, so that may be different than most.
I would strongly recommend the core if you're rewiring your hotkeys to get better.
Search "the core" in the search bar on TL, should lead you to the thread.
