I assume there will be a feature for disabling viewing of other's skins at some point, (for readability) but maybe they'll do a good enough job with them that they'll feel they won't need to add it. I don't see it any way to disable viewing the skins of others in the UI currently...
Bonus feature: They renamed the menu screen background options from "Zerg" and "Terran" to "Kerrigan" and "Planets".
Edit 1: fixed bonus feature. Edit 2: Added link to Ultralisk skin video
Unfortunately I don't have any of them unlocked, and I'm not sure what the level or achievement requirement is to unlock them. If you're a higher level (as in experience points-based level) player or otherwise have the new skins unlocked, please post screencaps!
I think that this is really step in the right direction, as long as the skins aren't too "distracting". I would love to play with Swarmlings in the Multiplayer. :D

I hope they do more animations. I'd pay cash money, for example, to make Infested Terrans do the Thriller zombie dance as an idle animation.
Hahaha... that would be great.
I really like what they are doing with the skins and animations. I'm looking forward to them and hopefully even more in the future.
Well im maxed out on Zerg Level but i dont have any of the skins unlocked. The ultralisk says it needs HotS collectors edition, while the other ones dont say anything when they're unlocked.

The achievements for the skins aren't live yet, i don't think. Guess it'll get added later today/tomorrow.

Ok thanks. Also the planet background is not new with this patch, I've been using pre patch instead of the kerrigan one 'cause the animations annoyed me. But it was called "Terran" instead of "Planets".

Kerrigan is flawless. Why planets? there is only one (mar sara, isn't it?) and the hyperion

Yes, the background is now what you'd expect it to be :/.
Used it in a zvp so it didn't work out too well, lack of sleep included! But hey I built around 12 ultralisks so you can clearly see the skin. It's a light emitting skin so screenshots won't be enough!
You would pay money just for these skins ?? WTF ! Atleast i dont need to pay for them and can unlock them but its not like it changes a lot on the game. Its not awesome becaue now oyu can change skins-.- its more likely awesome that they finally implented replay viewing with friends and game restart over replay, but it seems like the community is easily impressed by a few skins.

Our hobby is, presented with a collection of colored pixels, to manipulate a mouse and keyboard such that the pixels change into a configuration more pleasing to us. We spend lots and lots of money on software that presents different sets of available pixel patterns and methods for changing them, why would this particular method of changing our pixels be so different?
So, you can't use these skins yet? Also, the portraits that you unlock . . . are pretty terrible. Wonder if those are just placeholders or the actual portraits.

The amazon beta key is a standard HOTS beta key. Only the digital premium pre-order gives out a collector's edition HOTS beta. But don't worry, your actual retail game will be full-on collectors.

I'd love it if a pro adapted one skin and stuck to it, made it popular through his brilliant play, and then that skin took off and was seen everywhere online :D Otherwise, not too interested in the feature.

I think that it is by leveling, but they are not implemented yet.
On another note, they've added Viper, Warhound and Tempest special portraits for those who reach level 30 for each race in the Beta. You also gain a Feat of Strength and these portraits are transferred to your normal HotS account.

Great, but there needs to be a personal option to turn off skins, i.e. other players will continue to see their own skin and the skins of other players on their computer screen, but I have the option to not see any skins on my computer screen.
I get why people keep saying that there should be a way to turn off the skins from a perspective. However I haven't really heard why it would be a negative besides it would confuse people, I remember quite early into Dota 2 when Valve announced that it would be F2P with only micro transactions that people were campaigning for some kind of option to turn of cosmetics from their perspective but that eventually died down.
Why should Starcraft 2 have an option to disable it from a perspective, do we automatically assume that most people cannot recognise the unit due to the skin?
And this is cool why? I'll laugh my ass off if blizzard can milk it, I never understood why having a different skin would even be worth the time selecting it...

they are not gonna milk it, no micro transaction planned for these skin. It's cool for some and just leave it at that. It doesn't take long to select the skin anyway
I think builing skins allow for higher readability so im favoring those atm - though I dont think skins for big units like thors and ultralisks and collossi do a lot of harm. I'm not too sure about the zealot and marine though.
What would be really cool is adding costum dyes as leveling up rewards so you can make your personalized unit. Imagine (speed)zerglings with yellow wings

A level up and xp system combined with these type of rewards is all part of their big plan to encourage more casual/newer players to get into the SC2 ladder.

Yes, because it reduces readability, especially for new players, or new esports watchers. Having an option would also prevent joke models. For example, at Blizzcon, Blizzard always gives out joke WoW pets, joke SC2 portraits etc, it's pretty much inevitable that they will now give out joke skins, given their history.
Also, subjectively, it doesn't look good that there are many variants of the same unit. The game would look better if it was standardized and all units of the same type look the same. The only distinction should be color, and given that color is enough to distinguish different units, there does not need to be any more customization that we are forced to see. Plus, it's an option, if you want to see skins, then sure, why not. Therefore, I see no reason not to add an option.
Funny that you brought up Dota 2, because that game actually does look like a joke. Pirate Tidehunter... WTF.

Yah me too, I was level 27 at the time of patch, and in fact right now the little number on the portrait says 27, but when winning more xp points I'm at level 10 and they are giving all the rewards I already have =/.
