They had something similar with WC3 that was tonnes of fun. You could lose levels as well as gain them though if I recall...

I really don't like that this will affect how some people choose to play the game. I like the idea of leveling and unlocking stuff, but I really don't think anything you do in game should affect it. As much as I don't like cheese, people shouldn't be discouraged from cheesing by outside factors, or encouraged to macro for that matter. Are you serious? :D Just "gg" and leave the game if you're on one base and suspect that your opponent has taken the whole map. Also, people who will adjust their playstyle to gain more XP or whatever will be doing what casual gamers do - having fun. If you have a problem with that, get into Master/GM. Yea I'm very serious. Not everyone GG's when they've clearly lost a game. Not only that, this system is easy to farm exp off each other. We can just agree to mine out the map and slaughter eachother's armies. Or I can stream snipe a friend and he can let me kill his multiple times. Or people will leave games immediately when they think they've lost just to deny the other person exp for killing his units/buildings. If someone proxy 2 raxed me and I thought I was going to lose, could leave before he killed any units just to screw him out of points. God there's so many reasons that this is a bad idea. I could go on. I don't think you speak for all casual gamers when you say they just play for fun. I consider myself casual, and for me, fun is winning on my own without outside influences. If my opponent wants to 4 gate me, I wish he would instead of going for 8 gates for the possibility of more exp. Maybe, but if you're the person who is not participating in those things, you will win more games because of it than lose. I don't care about winning if it isn't legitimate. We're talking about ladder here, I want my opponent to be playing to win, not playing to earn exp. he will be playing to win he will still be in a ladder ranked match.. so he would lose points if he doesnt win.. There will be people who don't care about ladder points. There's a thousand ways this can change the way people play for the worse. Maybe I send my banelings at a terrans workers instead of just crushing his planetary with them, because I want the worker kills. Or maybe a terran goes hellions to kill mass lings instead of marauders to snipe buildings. You guys are ok with this? You or your opponent doing dumb shit to farm points? The point is you'll never know if it's on purpose, it will just be in the back of your mind, like maybe you would have lost if he wasn't playing for exp. Or if I lose my third to a protoss timing attack, maybe I just leave the game instead of trying to hold off his next wave just to screw him out of points. I'm sure only bronze league wouldn't care about ladder points in the first place. Plus, you can also get XP by playing Blizz's custom map so it would not effect the ladder as most care about their points. Like why would they risk of losing their precious points when you can play customs that have no effect on your ladder rank? Well just for the sake of argument, maybe for the first season nobody will care about ladder points. Farm exp, get to level 20, and you're set, it doesn't say anything about losing exp for any reason. You can fix your ladder rank after that, or next season after the reset. Edit: I see where it talks about customs now.
I have already mentioned it. Many people won't play ladder in the first place if they do not care about losing their points. So, you don't need to worry about people not trying to win first season as they will all go play customs with their friends or other farmer you've met on the channel to boost. Well because it's much much easier to do so

I don't think many casuals will stoop to contacting farmers to boost their account. We'll have to agree to disagree, or else the argument will go around in circles.
It's easy to avoid the previous issue entirely. Can you tell me the downside of earning exp just based on your opponent's rank instead of in game units killed/produced?

This is good as I think the portraits and achievements did keep people playing. Remember the initial buzz over the "StarCraft Master" portrait? This combined with the new stats is a good step towards addressing what Destiny wrote about. They just need to do something about maps/gameplay imo.

I hate comments like this. Does it hurt to have this implemented? Can they satisfy everyone? Probably not, but considering the small size of the SC2 development team, the amount of work these guys are doing is remarkable. They did screw up quite a few things in SC2, but it's not like they said ''fuck it, here's the game that we wanted you to play, now play it''. They are obviously listening and trying to make things better, comments like this aren't helping anyone, in fact they are annoying.
I personally find this addition awesome.

This would be cool with bgh/fastest as official game modes that give xp as well. Comp stomp is already in the game as coop vs ai and that should also give xp.
Think league and its bot games, dominion, and aram, all of which give xp and ip. Sc2 should be like that too, and maybe feature a new custom game each week that gives extra xp

Actually there are people with a lot of general RTS experience who had formerly made it into diamond and masters in 2010 and 2011 and subsequently ditched the game in favor of something else that I would still refer to as 'casuals'. This is the type of person that got all the achievements and gradually got sick of 1v1 when standard build orders started to form and fun strats like one base thor rush were no longer viable. This person isn't interested in playing standard macro even if they have an idea of how to do it. Team play isn't an option because early cheese is too strong. To get this person back to SC2 would require a pretty significant overhaul of the units and playstyle.

Not to be mean or anything but I feel some people need a reality check. If you aren't being paid to play the game and are without sponsorship, you are a casual. You might enjoy the playing 1v1s but that doesn't make you a professional, lol.
|
I like this. Undeniably it gives people another reason to keep playing. An incentive cannot be bad, especially since it doens't actually change the game play.
I want to see a more subdivided masters league. I made masters in season 1 and didn't really feel an incentive to try to get better as I wasn't trying to play in tournaments/ try for professionalism and felt too far away from GM to even try for it. Many of my friends also basically stopped playing 1v1 ladder the day they made masters.

Really, this, it's just a fun little thing, I don't know why so many people get all tryhard "gotta improve mah game", it's this attitude that really makes the ladder unfun most of the time. The game is stale and they need some spice, this will help. Geez I had a guy rage at me the other day, saying "you will never go pro." Dude, we are in mid masters for crying out loud, are you serious.

Finally they bring this back. Good thinking. Battle net still needs more adjustments, though. And who actually can think polishing up their game is a bad idea? You must be out of your mind.

That's how I see it.
They are copying their best version of battle.net. I.E. the version that WC3 had, not LOL. I do think that their match making as far as matching people very close in skill is a little better in SC2 though.

I am casual gamer. I dont play the game often (several hours in the week). I am still in master and I would like the team spend his time to improve design of the game (for all races), balance units etc.

WooHoOoOOO good news . more reason to play
|
Are people really so dense to think this is a negative thing? Do you want this game to succeed and be around for years to come? Then cater to the casuals and make shit pretty and give them a reason to play. It may not be the PERFECT way to do it yet (this is beta after all) but it's a HUGE step in the right direction.
|
I really feel like they should take this a step further and add custom unit models to the leveling system. Now that's REAL incentive, I know it would have made me want to play a lot was I was casual and even now it would be cool.
Pretty good addition anyway though, it felt like you hardly ever got new portraits or decals in WoL.

Yeah, after playing some DOTA2, I have to say that as far as matchmaking goes, SC2 is a lot better (admittedly 1v1 is easier than 5v5, I'd imagine).
I do like this leveling system, but I do wish they let me name my custom games especially if you can level using them as well. Even if there is an unranked ladder, sometimes you want to test some other maps that aren't on the ladder with people of your skill level. Any idea if they mentioned this?
