wow I really like this idea. I am very active on sc2, not really casual. But I've always loved loot and gear in most MMO's and FPS, like achieving a name for your self, a trophy or a sign of progress. I thought when blizzard was considering turning sc2 into free-to-play they would be selling portraits and decals, but I like this more, its not as hard as winning a 1000 matches for my favorite portrait but also still makes me want to work towards something.
!!!! Please add rewards such as new backgrounds when you log into the game, new unit voices for in-game units that you control, or different models for a unit in the game.
Only having decals and portraits for an entire XP+ system may not suffice or be worth it if the rewards do not scale appropriately. Whether this requires more then 20 ranks only blizzard will know for certain. Some of the highest ranks should unlock more then 1 thing at the same time to accurately indicate the significance and prestige of such high ranks.

Would you also say that less than 0.5% percent of the potentiel players care about a leveling system? Because that is utter bullshit..
It is quite possible that most of the people on TeamLiquid doesn't give a shit about a level system, but as a matter of fact it is not more than a few weeks ago that i heard my younger brother and his friends discuss how they did not like that the only reward in Starcraft is getting promoted, which for casual can be pretty hard. But i guess that nobody cares about what teenage boys aged 14-16 thinks about a certain game, because in Starcraft 2 we only care about +18 y/o

Holy moly you guys.
The proposed XP/Leveling system is not skill-based in any way. It does not supplant the ladder system. It is not the same as War3. It's for earning cosmetic items only and therefore not functionally different from the current "earn this portrait at X wins".
The only difference between the WoL unlock system and the HotS one is that you earn XP just by playing the game, rather than making winning a requirement. We also have no idea how things are going to be weighted. Either it's going to change the way some people play the game because they want to maximize earned XP per game (for cosmetic gains only, plus there's a cap anyway), or it won't and people will just end up grinding out XP anyway over many games just like they do with the current WoL reward system. I don't see "XP influencing player behavior" as something that is likely to happen, particularly in the higher leagues and especially when we don't know the formulae.
This is a fine idea and it will have no effect on pretty much anyone who is a habitual player.

But the incentive of the rewards is too small. Just portraits and decals are not that rewarding. Paragon level gives u gf and mf which are two most important stats in d3. In lol, u get new skins and new heroes by playing more. II don't think portraits and decals are that much an incentive for casuals.

I dont like it. But its harmless.

I like that they have fallen back to the WCIII days with experience. I hope that you can still get portraits and stuff from how many wins you have on top of this

this is a good thing. i dont care if its not enough, its a step in the right direction

A small step in the right direction.

I don't think it will give anyone an incentive to play that much more, but it's not a bad idea nonetheless

Please read before replying. Man oh man. Have to agree the XP is a nice start, but till now you can't do anything with it, in LoL you can get new Heros get new abilities and make your Heros in general stronger with boosts, but in sc2 no one will try to get XP because of a portrait or a decal. Maybe they could add new colours and skins for the units you can get with the XP, also you should have like a "bank", where you can save the points and you can decide on your own how you spend these points.

I don't mind... at least now I can tell the difference between a silver ally who sucks and a silver ally that can at least control a small-medium sized army well... if that would ever come in handy in arcade monobattles -_-

Cool thing to attract more casuals. I hope its not too late.
I still cant get how they fell from the awesomeness of wc3 bnet to this crap (needing to get an expansion , 2 years in to introduce BASIC stuff (for casuals and non casuals). Well they started to f up after 1.14 now that I think of it.
yeah im mad @ blizz.

like the idea, but we need more than portraits, some skins would be nice, announcer voices, hud skins, stuff like that
|
Heh, I thought this was a joke when I saw the thread title But if it is only cosmetic changes I think it might be OK. Nowadays you (unfortunately) need this kind of element to motivate people apparently. That's probably why CoD is so popular.

I'd like to spend exp on name changes.

This is definitely a reallly, really good thing for the game. This alone will get a lot more people playing the game.

Seems like a solid idea to appeal to some of the playerbase, especially considering that winning is not necessary and that the exp can be earned from customs or by just playing instead of winning. This might encourage people to play more without any real negative drawbacks as you can only go up in a sense.
I am not that interested in such perks, but won' t complain about this as it doesn' t make the game worse in any way. So thumbs up.
