League of Legends has it.. only with lol it is a real pain for new competitive players having to 'farm' up to lvl30 so they can play the real game.

However, I think you guys underestimate things like win of the day bonuses if they will exist. Those things attract casuals like crazy.

Being a semi-competitive person I will of course say that it is important to me that leveling does not affect the gameplay much as it does with some mmo's, but other than that I think it's cool! I just want starcraft to become the best game it can be! I HATE that. The 30-level system in LoL makes it too casual-friendly in my opinion. Even if I want to just play a few games w/ friends to see where we'd be rated, it's a pain in the dick, especially after level 20, to play all the games you need to get those last 10 levels. This is actually an improvement on that system. Level 1 or 60 (20x3?), you're still playing the same game with all the same features.

1) Bitch and whine about everything that you want in the game but that does not exist. 2) When features are not added, proceed to complain that Blizzard is a terrible company that never listens. 3) Blizzard adds feature. 4a) Either complain that the feature that was added is not the feature you want. 4b) If it was the feature that you wanted, complain that all of the features you wanted were not added. 5) Rationalize bitching by stating that feature x was in bw or exists in other competitive game. 6) Go back to 1.

It does not supplant the ladder system. It is not the same as War3. It's for earning cosmetic items only and therefore not functionally different from the current "earn this portrait at X wins". The only difference between the WoL unlock system and the HotS one is that you earn XP just by playing the game, rather than making winning a requirement. We also have no idea how things are going to be weighted. Either it's going to change the way some people play the game because they want to maximize earned XP per game (for cosmetic gains only, plus there's a cap anyway), or it won't and people will just end up grinding out XP anyway over many games just like they do with the current WoL reward system. I don't see "XP influencing player behavior" as something that is likely to happen, particularly in the higher leagues and especially when we don't know the formulae. This is a fine idea and it will have no effect on pretty much anyone who is a habitual player. Please read before replying. Man oh man. I mean they did say that it's based off building and killing things and higher level players build and kill more stuff because their macro is better on the average, but I don't think they'd have any artificial gains for people who are higher league. It just wouldn't make any sense.

The number of games you would need to play by portrait farming with worker rushes would be much much higher than the current amount of games. I personally would love to see the system also unlock special unit portraits. In game UI portraits in the bottom right side would be sick to unlock
