Warcraft 3's leveling system's charm (pre 1.14) was that only the best players managed to reach the highest levels (45-50).
Edit: This all seems irrelevant though as it apparently isn't similar to WC3's leveling system at all.
The WC3 ladder level system works like the ladder league system, ie, you win, you grow in level/promote to a higher league, you lose, you will likely drop in level/demote to a lower league, while the level system in HotS works more like LoL or DotA2, it's just for rewards.
This will be great for casuals. They love leveling up even if it doesn't lead to much. Just seeing that +XP number after every game is enough of a carrot for them.
Imo a strange idea to have alongside the current ladder system, but definitely a good one. This will keep the casual players playing, and that is really going to keep the scene alive.
I know it is unsightly to have a "CoD" ish look to the game but frankly speaking, modern multiplayer games are pushing towards that trend. Besides, the core game remains the same. I'd love to play with top hats on my marines or something for reaching a high level. Of course we'd need to be able to turn off skins if necessary

It also alleviates ladder anxiety by making it so you always get something, instead of +points if you win or -points if you lose, which puts a lot of pressure on the player.
I think this is completely pointless and shifts the idea of the game. The game is about winning and not about farming killing units to get more points. I will be abused, complained about and get boring after a few weeks. Carrot on a stick does not motivate anyone for long.
I am a casual player and if I don't feel like playing a competitive game, I play something else.

hello, it was in original Bnet.
Seeing that just got me nostalgic about how cool old Bnet was. I remember automated tournaments and stuff that me and my friends would enter even though we sucked. That was so much fun.

That's what leagues and points are for. The XP system is for dedicated people who play the game a lot no matter what their league.

I hate comments like this. Does it hurt to have this implemented? Can they satisfy everyone? Probably not, but considering the small size of the SC2 development team, the amount of work these guys are doing is remarkable. They did screw up quite a few things in SC2, but it's not like they said ''fuck it, here's the game that we wanted you to play, now play it''. They are obviously listening and trying to make things better, comments like this aren't helping anyone, in fact they are annoying.
I personally find this addition awesome.
The problem is that this is a bandage, rather than a solution. If this feature was part of the product upon release, it would have been great; it would have done exactly what it would have been meant to do. At this point, however, this is a waste of development time; it does not serve a purpose.
Main thing is, portrait farming will annoy the other people less. And it is also a sort of skill indication at the start. Maybe the OP should use the search function more actively the next time though. That being said it is a revamp of the achievement system, nothing wrong with it if it gets improved. Laughable that people complain about something like this, unless of course they were planning on farming pictures the old school way of being lame leavers and 0 point bronzies.

StarCraft is a digital game: you win or you lose, there is nothing inbetween (draws are really rare and don't mean anyone has won). Implementing farming xp for portraits will be an attempt to mix two games into each other, which I don't think has ever been a success. Let's say I really like fantasy rpgs and you really like jump&run games. There are only two gaming companies in the world: one makes rpgs and one makes jump&run games. We are both happy. Now the one company wants to expand it's customers by adding jump&run elements into rpgs and the other does vice versa. We are both left with bad games and go out and play in the sun, go out with friends and spend time with our families. Do you really want to live in such a world?
I love the new features they added with the XP, i think getting rewards like decals and portraits is now more suitable than bombing 20 games to win 10 in a row for a new pic
You guys are glorious. Hardly any casuals here purporting to be able to speak about what would entice casuals. If the game was already frustrating and not fun, why the hell would xp points bring me back into the game?
If it feels like I'm still not getting the game and getting stomped, why would grinding games for xp points make the experience more palatable? Is my 'character' getting stronger? If I couldn't even be bothered to play enough games previously to get portraits via achievements, how the hell is watching an xp bar more of an incentive?
