They already announced that stuff a long time ago.

Maybe, but if you're the person who is not participating in those things, you will win more games because of it than lose.

I don't care about winning if it isn't legitimate. We're talking about ladder here, I want my opponent to be playing to win, not playing to earn exp.

I have also thought that that would be an incentive to help players, for example, if I'm rank 5 Terran but want to try Protoss I won't lose ladder places for trying a race I'm not good at playing.

This system works in cod or bf3 cause you are unlocking gear through leveling but in SC2 theres nothing to unlock beside portraits and decals, or maybe they want us to earn our units now? ;

he will be playing to win he will still be in a ladder ranked match.. so he would lose points if he doesnt win..

FIN It's the same thing as getting wins to get portraits, you just dont have to win. It wont be any different, why do you think it's so much fun. It will be A WHOLE LOT GRINDIER than the one where you could get a lot of fast wins, this system comes from wow it will feel like a job to do a game/games each day to get the daily bonus.
Grind to get what exactly? It's all cosmetics, compared to WoW where you actually needed the gear to do any good.
I think you are overreacting... it really ain't that big of a deal.

I think it's a nice addition to the game, as it atleast gives some sort of incentive for the more casual players to keep playing and being interested in the game.
|
When I saw the thread title I thought they were talking about in game leveling of some kind...
To be honest, I don't see anything wrong with this. As long as they don't imbalance the game or reduce the skill ceiling to cater for casuals, they can add all they want to make casuals play more.
|
Seems like good idea. It should attract players more. Today I want to get 500xp Would be nice, if 1v1 was the best way to xp. Because it's the hardest to get to and continue due to ladder anxiety and similar things.
|
I think it could be a good thing, it clearly works with LoL and something similar worked with WC3. It really didn't remind me of Call of Duty when I read it so I don't completely get why people are bringing that up.
The only problem I see with it is what can you offer that is meaningful in RTS games? We have portraits, so there is one cool reward. But something like skins, I don't know if that really works in RTS, for a casual player it would probably cause a lot of confusion as to what unit does what, stuff like that. Some more elaborate skins might cause a lot of visual clutter too which you don't really want in a fast paced competitive game. You can't really give any sort of upgrades or anything that would give someone an advantage in-game, that just defeats the purpose of RTS. So what else can you offer other than portraits? That's the challenge.
I think one cool thing would be ladder race colors. Maybe I don't want to be red or blue, I want to be purple. So let me be purple! Its something small and you'd have to account for the fact that two people might pick the same color, but I think it is desirable for some people at least. I kinda forgot about the decal things too, I guess offering more interesting decals would be fun and harmless, so that's an option. I'm sure we could come up with more things but its definitely a challenge. Rewards need to be meaningful, but at the same time they can't affect actual gameplay.
To be honest, I think making the leveling system work in conjunction with the league system would be best if the object is to cater more to the casual player (not sure if this is a good or bad objective though). I know that some of my friends would rather play a game like LoL over SC2 because in LoL, no matter how good you are if you keep at it long enough you will hit level 30 and be the "highest rank". A lot of people use this as justification to tell themselves that they are above average. If you tell someone in LoL they are bad they might say "But im level 30 with 900 wins, you're the one who sucks you only have 250 wins". In reality, the number of wins (without considering losses) and your level means nothing in terms of your skill, it just means you've played more. But you can't see other players' losses, so people use these types of things to measure themselves.
SC2 isn't so nice. If you are bronze you are at the bottom, if you are grandmasters you are at the top. SC2 is pretty blunt about how good you are and that turns off a lot of people, because 99% of people are going to place into bronze if they have never played starcraft before (or at least another similar RTS). The only way to see yourself making progress is by actually making progress and ranking up, not just playing a lot and gaining levels. So I think this type of system (used in League of Legends, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, etc.) is way more attracting to the casual gamer than a cut throat league system that is rather honest about how good you actually are.

You get a Portrait reward when you level!!! That's stepping it up AT LEAST :D

Why... the... hell... are ... people who don't give a shit about this, actually here whining? If you don't care either way then the change is not for you. I will enjoy this. As will many others and it MAY just help retain a few players which is what people seemed to want.
Why are they wasting time on this? Maybe because a game is a complete package and they dont just cater to all the supposed masters and GMs posting on TL. -_-

There will be people who don't care about ladder points. There's a thousand ways this can change the way people play for the worse. Maybe I send my banelings at a terrans workers instead of just crushing his planetary with them, because I want the worker kills. Or maybe a terran goes hellions to kill mass lings instead of marauders to snipe buildings. You guys are ok with this? You or your opponent doing dumb shit to farm points? The point is you'll never know if it's on purpose, it will just be in the back of your mind, like maybe you would have lost if he wasn't playing for exp. Or if I lose my third to a protoss timing attack, maybe I just leave the game instead of trying to hold off his next wave just to screw him out of points.

I guess Destiny can stop crying now.

This is only cool if you lose xp when you lose games imo. If not the "mass games dudes" will simply be on top.
Warcraft 3's leveling system's charm (pre 1.14) was that only the best players managed to reach the highest levels (45-50).
Edit: This all seems irrelevant though as it apparently isn't similar to WC3's leveling system at all.
|
Hm... i feel this will instigate more people to play only to win, rather than for the fun of it, which in turn adds more pressure. More than we already complain there is.
It's a good thing they're trying new things but still... i feel this is a step in half the right, half the wrong direction.
They already complain they have few resources, perhaps they should focus first on what the community has been asking like costumizable game rooms and watching pro players instead of gimmicks to force people to play by ways of psychological hooking.
|
Good addition to the game. Not much more to say than that.

This isn't for the best players though. This is aimed more at the casual players.
And it'll work. Casual players love grindy shit. Love it. Even though they don't seem to think so when they hear about a grind, they end up doing it anyway and generally having fun with it.
