From what I recall of Tommy Tuch’s employment of it, but especially Conte’s, it was more about absorption and counter-punching than Amorim’s approach.
Amorim also uses two 10s who drift wide, rather than wingers who can drift in.
Which I think means his system needs a high press to function, otherwise the midfield 2 and the 2 10s get isolated from each other and can’t interchange in dangerous areas.
If you can’t squash the pitch and reliably win the ball back high, it’s going to be tough. But you kind of need to do that in this system.
Ignoring the personal fall-out for a second, but part of why Rashford was booted out was also him not really fitting Amorim’s system. Whereas a Conte or Tommy Tuchs he’d absolutely fit in to stretch play, give a threat on the counter and give width. Werner’s Chelsea numbers weren’t great but he absolutely did that very well.

What points towards him leaving, is that last year, they hired one of the biggest coaching talents in Norway to be his assistant manager, and I had the feeling they did this to ensure they have someone who can take over the reins once Knutsen leaves while maintaining continuity, and I don't think the guy who joined is actually that interested in staying assistant manager forever.
and just overnight bodo-glimt defeats sturm graz on aggregate to make it to the league stage!

Graz beat Bodo-Glimt yesterday? Just not high enough :D

I guess Bodo-Glimt have been in European competitions quite a bit already, but I'm looking forward to seeing how they handle the games over the coldest winter months. I recall Finnish HJK playing their Europa league games in an indoor hall on a rather worn-out looking turf. That's pretty different from the usual UCL glamour.

we're down to grimsby town 2-0 with 20 minutes to go. if we lose this game i'm fucking done with this squad and manager.
edit: onana is genuinely the worst keeper to ever play for united, and that includes the likes of talbi and carroll.

He's clueless about English football.
He has to go.

Grimsby outplayed United in that first half. That's a bit embarrassing.

Taibi never lived down an early fuckup, bit before my time but I’ve heard he wasn’t that bad, just forever associated with that. Carroll wasn’t a worldbeater, but he was a dependable enough number two. Onana, he’s good for a gaffe every week seemingly, he doesn’t always do so mind. And it’s not like it’s limited to one area. He’s not just missing the odd cross and not commanding his area. He’ll let a tame shot that’s no business ending up in the net one week, another he’ll make a dreadful error with his feet.
And it’s not like he’s excelling otherwise, while dropping the odd clanger. A good Onana performance is him not making a big error, and performing to a level you expect from any Premier League keeper. Early doors when de Gea was adjusting to English football and beefing up, he wasn’t great at bossing his area for corners and set pieces, but he was always a quality shot stopper pretty much from the off, and he improved his weak areas greatly.
I feel bad for the lad, he was a decent keeper for Inter, his confidence just looks absolutely shot. And, at least at United, seemingly irreparably so.

Yeah it wasn’t some balls to the wall rearguard action and nicking a few, they were outright the better footballing side in the first half. They started to wilt come the 60th/70th minute, which is totally understandable.
Fuck sake Grimsby would have had a 3rd if VAR was in operation.
It must be tough being a United fan these days, it really must. I’m not a supporter of a rival, nor an ‘ABU’ but that’s really the worst indictment of recent years. From fear and jealousy, to being laughed at, once you get to a stage that some other rivals genuinely start pitying you, that’s really fucking damning.
Even, idk a Spurs fan, at the nadir of Angeball, yeah you’d be battered a lot but when it clicked it was entertaining stuff.
If United were at least swashbuckling but flawed, at least that’s something, but they ain’t even that

The absolute scenes man, incredible. I wonder if this is forced to make Amorim get the sack here at this point.

bring on 26-27 already.
just watched highlights and holy shit onana. ten hag still doing damage to us all the way from leverkusen

so theres a fair amount of speculation which is not unexpected at all that amorim will either resign or be sacked perhaps before the international break.
if he was to leave, who would be the top contenders to replace him?
im not sure whos out there that could take this job and be reasonably confident they could produce results. back to ole? xavi?

I imagine he'll be sacked after the Burnley game.
Especially if we don't win.
Which we won't.
|
Sacking Anorim now would be a mistake imo since there are no replacements... But he really needs to just field U21s at this point lmao. The team just disappoints him all the time

These players wouldn't get relegated in a sensible system.
They wouldn't pull up any trees, but they wouldn't get relegated.
Amorim and his system are the precise reason we'll go down because he clearly won't change it.
He's like a Football Manager player who downloads someone else's formation and then doesn't know what to do if it doesn't win them every game at a canter.

i have some sympathy for amorim after todays game though. he makes the point in his post match interview which i think is 100% fair, the formation means fuck all when youre losing to a 4th division side.
if youre playing for man utd you could literally be fielded with no instructions and the expectation is that you still demolish a 4th division team. losing to grimsby is 1000% down to the players not giving a fuck.
i criticise amorims tactics because i dont think his tactics is giving us the competitive edge against opposition where those small differences actually matter. grimsby isnt that kind of opposition and blaming amorims tactics for that isnt fair because he is correct when he says the players have shown their true colours. theyve thrown him under the bus and he publicly acknowledged it in his interview, which is why people are speculating his exit already.

If he isn't able to convince those 30 people that his system works and they should trust it, and instead they're demotivated and underperforming, that is a management issue. Amorim isn't all of management, and with the number of coaches ManU has ground through over the last years, it's probably something far more structural. But he did take the job of being those players' direct manager, and if he isn't able to manage them effectively, then he is doing a bad job.

that actually is very true, they are all earning their wages and "are proud" to wear their badge, instructions are not the fault for losing to 4th division

im saying its not fair on amorim to be the guy to take the biggest fall just because his tactics happen to be a hot topic right now. this isnt some high school football team where players are still pubescent teens that can not put in a shift if theyre not feeling up for it on the day. these are extremely highly paid professionals. theres absolutely no excuse for not putting in a shift.
honestly it doesnt matter how much you disagree with the tactics or the manager on a personal level, if youre fielded you are expected to do a job to a certain standard. that standard wasnt even close to being met in todays game. so far off it i dare say our u21 would have done better.
amorim has a lot to prove when it comes to his tactics, but were only 2 weeks in since his first pre season with the club ended. were not even in mw3 of the season and honestly only had 1 game in between this and arsenal (which we actually played well in). if his players are throwing him under the bus on a whim like this then this result is 100% on them. again, its fucking 4th division grimsby for fucks sake. how many people in this forum have actually even heard of the club before todays game?
