It’s been a while! From what I recall of Tommy Tuch’s employment of it, but especially Conte’s, it was more about absorption and counter-punching than Amorim’s approach.
Amorim also uses two 10s who drift wide, rather than wingers who can drift in.
Which I think means his system needs a high press to function, otherwise the midfield 2 and the 2 10s get isolated from each other and can’t interchange in dangerous areas.
If you can’t squash the pitch and reliably win the ball back high, it’s going to be tough. But you kind of need to do that in this system.
Ignoring the personal fall-out for a second, but part of why Rashford was booted out was also him not really fitting Amorim’s system. Whereas a Conte or Tommy Tuchs he’d absolutely fit in to stretch play, give a threat on the counter and give width. Werner’s Chelsea numbers weren’t great but he absolutely did that very well.
