I think some kind of European spot should still be the minimum target for a club with United's resources. Most of the big 6 are probably too far ahead and Newcastle is still strong if they can sort out/recover from the internal stuff with Isak and others. Landing somewhere around positions 6-8 seems where I'd put United in the league.

We'll see how Amorim has recovered during the summer. He understandably seemed mentally exhausted towards the end of the last season.

Spurs with Eze are actually a bit of a scary prospect.

If I could pretend that the last 10 years didn't happen and was just looking at squads and coaches I would have Man United challenging for the top 2/3

Unfortunately I can't, and the curse of United doesn't feel like its going anywhere soon imo.

yeah thats kinda what i was getting at too.
i agree that uniteds expected placement is all due to perception based off their shit performances, but if you looked at that squad in a vacuum expecting a 6-8th placement is criminal.

i think if i was in uniteds board or i was amorim, i would 100% be telling that squad that the expectation would be to challenge for top 4. you can chalk last season up to a whole bunch of excuses but now that amorim has gotten a full pre season, the bad eggs have been removed from the squad and bought 2 of the best prem attackers last season, a failure to be competitive with the top 4 would be an utter disaster imo. narrowly missing out and placing 5-6 i could live with, but barely getting something like 7-8th by the scruff of our neck would justify amorim losing his job for me.

Each of Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko are good individually but as a package don't make sense. I feel like they are going to get in each other's way. Plus where does Fernandes go if Cunha plays?

- Cunha very red card prone
- Goalkeeper situation is still a disaster
- Defence still poor
- Midfield still weak
- Toxic culture that snowballs quickly as soon as anything goes wrong

They'll be better than last year, but I reckon about 10th.

yeah even after seeing the pre season matches im not fully convinced about amorims tactics. i agree that the way the team sets up just doesnt seem optimal for the players at our disposal, including the new signings. that said, the sheer calibre of players we have means that barring any obvious lack of professionalism by the players in their application, poor results is going to be 100% on amorim.

like i said, he doesnt really have too many excuses to fall back on now. cunha and mbeumo are presumably "his" players, onana is still a tragedy but frankly onana isnt going to be the reason we end up wherever we do. honestly if we had ole managing this squad in typical united fashion 4231, united would be competing for top 4. predicting 10th place is absolutely wild, but if it looks like youre going to be right by christmas and were down in solid mid table by then, i think amorims going to be gone.

i will say i think if we bring in either a good dm or a gk i would be a lot more confident about our chances. seems like fernandes is going to be one of our centre mids and we need a partner for him who has legs.

A two man central midfield with Fernandes in it is going to get eaten alive. Neither Ugarte or Casemiro can carry the defensive burden on their own.

Antony, Sancho, Mount and Casemiro are still over a million pound wages a week between them. Gotta clear at least one of them before anyone else can come in.

I think it goes a bit under the radar, the league is pretty competitive these days most teams have some real quality players, and the standards of coaching are now pretty high.

Unless you’ve an absurd squad, gone are the days where the team doesn’t really click, or takes a while to, but a few individuals bail you out.

Most the league has a player or two like that now at least, and most of the league have good coaches.

United may have a decent season, but Amorim’s going to have to get them playing cohesively. If he doesn’t, there are too many good coaches who’ll exploit his system failing. And United’s front trio, or Bruno, sure excellent players. But not scarily so.

The crux of my point is you can get away with being a bit dysfunctional, from sheer individual quality. But United’s competition for upper table generally aren’t dysfunctional, and lots of other teams have equivalent, or better individual quality.

I hope it starts to bear fruit, I quite like Amorim and memes aside I think a strong United only benefits the English game for me as a neutral.

I just don’t think there’s a middle ground. If his system works and starts to bear fruit, they’ll do well. If it doesn’t, they won’t. They’ve got some good players, but not good enough to carry a dysfunctional team versus competition that’ll be very cohesive and settled in many instances.

pretty much all his errors came from his last 2 seasons. the thing is all his errors combined in 12 years was less than onanas in 2 years so...absolutely no contest.

anyway this game pretty much confirms that we need a gk and a mid. ugarte is awful, casemiro is class in possession but doesnt have the legs and fernandes is too afraid to get involved more as a cm because wed be too exposed in counters. the positives were we were the better team for sure and the performance was better than last season, although even last season we generally showed some competitiveness against bigger sides.

We would've drawn if we played Heaton.

Much better performance than I was expecting. Play like that all season and we will definitely place better than last year.

But playing well consistently has been the problem for a while.

One day Chris Wood is going to get the respect he deserves from the football world.

His record is only just behind Salah, Isak and Haaland over the last couple of years.

And still there's always a level of "aww didn't he do well" about how people talk about it.

The guy is an absolute beast. 34 years old and only getting better and better.

Any thoughts on Patrick Dorgu? He looked pretty damn good on that one shot that bounced off the outside of the post vs Arsenal. Really decisive looking stuff.

i think hes developed well over just the last 6 months even. maybe it was just him getting adjusted to the pl but i think hes very solid. has good energy, good feet and goes into the right positions.
other than cunha though i think yesterdays stand out performer was yoro. hes only 19 but he seems to be insanely good
