The Raptors developmental framework was in place before Nurse took over as head coach. The fact a Raptors coach has won COY two out of the last three years demonstrates this is more of an organization wide thing than Casey and/or NUrse being the best coach in the league. Casey won the award primarily for being the head coach of a team that drastically changed their playstyle on offense (a change that was forced on him by Ujiri). An offense that Nurse designed and implemented. It could easily be argued that the year Casey won COTY he did on the back of Nurse's work on offense. With Casey gone, it's also allowed Nurse to implement his defensive ideas and has made Toronto one of the best defending teams in the league as well. They've won games they had no business winning because of some of his defensive decisions. I never saw Casey pull rabbits out of his hat the way I've seen from Nurse the last 2 years. Ya, the execs provide the players but they gave Casey players too and all that got us was swept by the Lebrons year after year (or the Wizards, lol).

Big difference between Gasol and JV. Nurse is a good coach. He is probably one of the top 10 coaches in the NBA. You do notice that Lowry and VanVleet are permitted to adlib almost all game long right? Nurse and Casey both deserve credit for giving them that freedom. However, they earned that freedom by being brilliant decision makers. The Raptors half court offense.. over which a coach can have more influence .. is the worst part of the team's over all game. With Bizmack Biyombo as their starting center , a 35 year old Luis Scola at PF, and Derozan at SG ... Casey managed to get the Raptors to the ECF and play 6 games against the 2016 champion cavaliers. Casey is a good coach.. I'd say Nurse is a bit better.

I know the final scores were also influenced by injury, but those huge early game runs are just generally unheard of in playoff games. Sure, a 25-5 run happens, but not the first 15 points (right?) of the game. Its like when the Bulls held the Jazz to 22 pts in the second half. Its not supposed to be a real thing.

A lot of people had been saying the product was good, which I kept disagreeing with, and this is why. People were not playing good defense at all, it was like mini all star games. Now sometimes we see a team able to play defense coordinated and in shape (this is likely a large part of the bad defense, its almost impossible to be in NBA shape without playing NBA games) they end up going on like 20-2 runs. I know the final scores were also influenced by injury, but those huge early game runs are just generally unheard of in playoff games. Both the Blazers and Mavs profile as teams with strong offenses with weak defenses. The Blazers were almost eliminated by a depleted Nets team. It took a heroic effort by Dame to get them to the playoffs. The Lakers aren't good offensively but even bad offenses can go off when the other team doesn't defend. The Blazers and Mavs are vulnerable to other teams going on huge runs because of their poor defense. The Clippers made something like 11 straight shots during their run the other night. One of the announcers made a good point early on in the bubble. Defenses were behind at the start of the bubble because of the lack of conditioning and coordination. Offenses were ahead because the players couldn't practice anything but shooting for 4 months. Not to mention all those players who only shoot well in an empty gym but couldn't hit anything in a packed arena. Well, now they have an empty gym to shoot in.

And for some of them, maybe after seeing yet another person get gunned down by cops, they just don't see basketball as the priority now.
