FFP is tied to turnover and revenue, plus the case brought against City was regarding past transgressions. Sure wasn’t the case eventually thrown out because FFP’s remit expires after 5 years by UEFA’s own rules?
We’re seeing both sides of FFP’s inadequacy here, both the failure to rein in the kind of excess that pushes being competitive outside of possibility for clubs not backed by billionaires or states or investment groups, but also that FFP struggles to have much power over the established elite and it becomes a closed shop.
Ironically enough people are pissy over ‘what about FFP?’ for the same reasons City themselves stated, that it doesn’t really apply to clubs established with big turnovers etc.
I mean I think it bloody sucks too, but City have had a few years building brand City and being successful on the pitch so perhaps this is sufficient for them now to afford a player like Messi.

FFP is suspended this summer, so messi deal isn't involved at all.

Players having holidays in Ibiza or other crowded tourist places was a great idea in the first place.

The workout on FFP is they split the cost over the whole business so Man City only will pay "part of it" and will probs lump the rest onto New York who do not care about FFP per se. So it is shrewd but good business alone from their part.

Yeah this, i don't know why players thought it would be a good idea to all go together on holiday like normal to Ibizia/Greece etc they all went to the same spot and comeback with Corona....how coincidental!
That is stupid, but what is more stupid is the UEFA Nations League games going ahead where players are travelling around Europe trying to stay away from Corona days before the new season begins! The whole thing is crazy, the complete opposite of what had to be done to get the season back up and running safely.

Yeah maybe just ditching this round of Nation's League games wouldn't have been a bad idea. I know scheduling complications. But it's just not worth it is it.

My guess is the national associations are somewhat dependent on income from international matches, I know the DFB is.

What kind of income is to be expected from a friendly game with no audience? I'd guess they probably lose money with these kinds of games. Renting stadium, paying Refs, traveling, ... all for some meager tv money?

There is TV money, but also sponsorships are tied to representation.
If you don't play, you don't show your Adidas jerseys, you don't show your board ads, you do not have a press conference in front of your discounter logo, you can not be shown arriving in your Mercedes bus, etc.
There is more to it than the few bucks they are getting from the ARD for it.

Good point! Because I really can't imagine ARD paying a lot. I know a lot of die hard football fans and absolutely none of them will watch this tonight

Commie party probably mad at the UK or something.
Every business wroth anything answers to them so they probably told them to hold payment.
Just aswell. It hurts the PL's bottom line (a fair bit) but yeah, fuck those guys.

wasn't there a big commotion on how they refused to broadcast the arsenal game because ozil said some shit about persecuted muslims in the country? probably has something to do with that.

I dont think its a stand so much as they were told to fuck off, so they just said fuck you back because it was a lose lose so they keeping their dignity was the optimal choice.
If there was any chance of weaseling the money out they wouldve gone for it.
Even progress leagues like the NBA bow to China money if its on the table.

I wonder how much those deals with China are worth. Living there, I can tell that for the end user it's super cheap. I can pay maybe 30€ and get the whole season of the PL, or maybe 60-70€ for most leagues for a year. For the final 8 of the CL, I paid 1€ per game. UFC is also dirt cheap, something like 25€ per year and you have access to every fight live, with the English commentary, and including all PPVs (which are worth $79 per!!!, in the US).
I guess that with so many potential users, they would still get a lot of money, but the money/user ratio is wayyy lower than anywhere else. I love that here. The only problem is having to wake up at 3am to watch CL football haha

Probably the bigger thing is establishing good foothold on Chinese market long term. It's pretty rough winning fans over once they've started supporting different teams from different leagues.
