Well not surprised that La Liga is siding Barcelona on this one, imagine losing your top player to the PL, would make the La Liga even less competitive viewership wise.

Yeah La Liga without Ronaldo and Messi is not the same for sure, still is good just not the same!

[Martinez] Lionel Messi has asked the club twice for a friendly exit and wants an agreement with Barcelona. He doesn’t want to face a lawsuit against the club he loves.

This is just sad :/
Not a way for a club to treat their legend like that

Yeah it's fucked up at this point, I'm sure Messi would want to negotiate the release clause and City would agree to pay a fee of like 100m which allows Barca to get some cash + free his wages for a rebuild. It's really sad his Barca career is ending like that but if he wants to make full use of his final years let him be man.

I absolutely understand what Barca is doing. If they give into Messi's claim that this contract clause is in effect, they get nothing. So they need to fight this.
But I would be very surprised if they reject offers with somewhere between 100-200kk

Barca is doing the right thing trying to rebuild, IMO they need to ditch as many of their current players as possible and start totally from default, they have a budget and brains to be a champions league winner in 1-3 years And compete with madrid for la Liga. The greatest risk to them is only doing it halfway. Whether Messi leaves or stays the only person should be safe is de jong. Busquets rakitic suarez alba are near worthless in any future plan. Vidal umtiti ter stegen are borderline to leave or stay but in a rebuild It’s best to keep only young talent like umtiti. Griezman and coutinho were massive overpays and nobody wants to buy them, funny that barca could’ve won the CL this year possibly if they hadn’t let coutinho leave playing for their enemy Bayern exposing their huge gaping hole at attacking midfield/ forward.

What? Umtiti is always injured and one of those that should be out. Same as Vidal (not because of injuries but wage + performances).

Ter Stegen is a staple for that team, how on earth is he borderline. The others yes, could be cleared. You need someone to lead the kids so not all of the team can be out as some experience and leadership is needed.

Umtiti comment really triggered me xD

Ter Stegen? He has been the best of the team alongside Messi for several seasons. Why would he leave?

Umtiti is finished as a top level player. He has refused surgery since before world cup despite needing it.

Ter Stegen for me until that Bayern game was by far the best keeper in the world, BY FAR, and consistently he has and probs should be considered the best keeper in the world too, guy is insane! He got baited into that contract extension it seemed though xD could have done with him at Chelsea lol

By far the best is a bit of a stretch with Allison, Oblak and Neuer around, but easily top 5 either way.

I second this. Ter Stegen has like at least 10 good years ahead of him.

Yeah that man is smoking. Salvageable: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Lenglet, Todibo, Alba (to teach the next one they sign, not for long-term), Dembélé, Griezmann, Coutinho, Braithwaite (as a sub), De Jong, Puig, Fati. Griezmann and Coutinho would not be on my list if Messi stayed, but if he's out I can see them fitting although I'd prefer a pure 9 and another pure winger (Trincao the next star?).

That leaves at least 1 MF (Pjanic could do a season or 2 I guess) + 2 CB + 1 LB + 1 striker to buy. If they get money from Messi, they can get a good 9 and some young players. In a year when the new direction comes in, they'll only have to fill a couple of spots. It's not THAT terrible of a situation. Until the direction makes it worse somehow.

It is precisely a terrible situation because the direction has made it worse. And it will keep getting worse.

Hmm I find it disgusting what they are doing, first they ask players to take paycut, and using the press against them. Then the players agree to have league extended,. Messi included, and then using this extension as a loopwhole to void out of contract the Lets Messi leave after season. Hope Barca and la liga gets whiped in courts for this behavoir. So unclassy it hurts, the sponsor should leave in protest

Eh, just one more year. Once I accepted that they wouldn't resigned and the season would be trash, things don't feel that bad anymore haha. If they kickstart the rebuilding before they f*** off, it's not a bad thing. I don't think they want to harm the club, they're just incompetent. They're also not really damaging the club's image with all that Messi drama because everyone knows it's because of them and socios are against it. Or at least that's how I perceive it. Bad thing would be if they sell players that are valuable for the future of the team, but I haven't seen such rumors yet. Fingers crossed.

This is becoming the Gettysburg/Waterloo of legal battles.

Barcelona believe the only way Lionel Messi can legally leave for free is if he commits to not playing football next season, sources have told ESPN.

Barca's interpretation of a much-debated clause in Messi's deal is that he could quit the club but would have to forgo his salary for a season and could not sign for a new club until next summer, when his existing terms are due to expire anyway.

Messi, 33, is attempting to exercise a clause in the contract he signed in 2017 that allows him to leave for free at the end of each season. Sources at Barca have told ESPN that the deadline for activating the clause in order to sign for another side expired in June.

Messi's legal team continue to argue that he has already unilaterally rescinded his contract with the club. For that reason, the forward didn't turn up for the start of preseason Sunday, as it would have compromised that claim. Barca returned to preseason training Monday without the club captain.

Meanwhile, reports in Spain over the weekend claimed Messi's €700 million buyout clause is no longer active, causing further confusion.

Barca insist that is not the case and La Liga agreed with them on Sunday, saying they have had access to the contract. In a short statement, the league said Messi's deal is still active and they would not facilitate his registration for another club without the clause being paid.

According to several legal experts consulted by ESPN, the clause in Messi's contract can be interpreted in a variety of ways. If he and the club cannot come to an understanding, the difference in opinion could yet lead to a landmark court case.

Despite the standoff, sources have told ESPN that Barca's offer for Messi to extend his contract at Camp Nou by an additional two years remains on the table.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu wants to sit down with Messi's father and agent, Jorge, when he lands in Spain this week to sign a deal that would link the player to the club until 2023.

Sources would not reveal the exact terms of the deal to ESPN but did confirm the salary would be similar to what Messi earns, close to €100m gross annually.

However, the club are not optimistic of Messi signing the deal, given his desire to leave the club, with Manchester City still the favourites to sign the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Meanwhile, sources told ESPN that Barca plan to reply to Messi's latest burofax, which arrived last week explaining he would not attend preseason, by asking him to reconsider his position on wanting to quit the club as they fight to keep their record goal scorer.
