Well my last post was timed poorly. They just announced Magnussen as their driver for the year.

edit: Oops, it's a multi-year contract, not just this year.

Apparently KMag kept a good relationship with Haas the last year or so, which made this easier for them all.

Merc have shown up with a new car. This time ft. or well, sans sidepods.

Quick analysis from not an aero engineer.

Downwash from the mirror mount (aka upper side impact structure) forces air down into what used to be the sidepod area, and pushes the front tire wake outwards and away from the rear tires. What it does beyond that, I have no fucking idea.

Well here's a short summary of that and what that design change accomplishes. Im still not sure if this is within regulations or not though.

It's been interesting watching all of the F1 tech people be completely puzzled by the Mercedes and, to a lesser extend, the Williams since they're both doing very bizarre things with their sidepod area. Rather than deleting their sidepod altogether like Mercedes did, Williams turned their sidepods into a tunnel that they can control the airflow out of. The one engineer I listened to talk about them suggested that these two designs could have big drawbacks but if controlled correctly could also be incredibly powerful. Knowing Mercedes, they've probably got a pretty good understanding of how to utilize this design.

This guy is one of the most knowledgeable aero experts that exists. He worked for Mercedes F1 up until 2020, and now as a freelancer consultant. If you want to know what's going on with any of the cars on the grid (and more), he has a video about it. Here he's explaining wtf is up with the Merc, and in detail at that. The shape is a result of messing with the rules in a very clever way. Whether it will work or not remains to be seen tho. There's definitively some potentially huge drawbacks with this design as well

I find it weirdly funny that Mercedes seem to be genuinely claiming that they're struggling with their car (which, to be fair, hasn't looked very stable on track so far and has had big problems with bouncing/"porpoising") and won't be competing for wins at first but nobody will believe them because they did the same thing almost every other year. It seems like they might actually have issues with their car this year but because they exaggerated their problems every other year it's just assumed they're lying.

People dont believe anything they say, because literally everything they say is always filled with lies and bullshit, distortion. They are a lot like russians, they accuse others of their own behaviour. Oh Hamilton is such a fair and clean driver, really I wonder what Albon thinks of that after having been robbed of 2 podiums. Verstappen is so dangerous, after they literally ram him of the road twice in a row. And yeah last year, we are so weak, our car is slow, after testing, and then win 3 of the 4 first races.

Whatever let them be 1 second faster than everyone else with everyone else being close to each other so we can watch some fun/close racing without them in view.

I'm trying to remember which season it was (I think 2016?) where in a race the leading Merc was like 10 seconds ahead of the other and the other was also like 10+ seconds ahead of third place, so they just didn't show the Mercedes cars for the extreme majority of the race and talked about the race from third place downwards. At the end they were like "oh by the way Hamilton won" and the in-lap was the most they'd shown of his car the whole race. It was pretty amusing.

I dont care about the Mercs sandbagging anymore , I saw Charles best lap was with a 290Kmh top speed and I am now pumped for qualy , is it likely the Mercs are the fastest car come Saturday , sure , if I would be betting I would put my money on them , but I cant help myself to get excited about Ferrari this year , the one worry is if the Merc concept is really that much better then the rest , then its game over , because the reason they are able to do this concept is a radical cooling system that uses Aero tech which is very expensive to develop , and they developed it before the cap cost , now it would be impossible to catch up on that tech.
Crossing fingers its not Merc 1/2 , I had enough Merc domination , lets have some competition at the front , last year was AMAZING to watch even without Ferrari , HYPPPPPPPE

Yep those were fun times, 2015-2017 period. Some young guns fighting in the midfield, Ferrari - Red Bull and other teambattles and a Mercedes that no one cared about.

So far I think only Red Bull and Ferrari are looking solid that have most of their reliability issues fixed, but the others seem to still have problems here and there. I know Mercedes has been dishonest about past problems, but I think this year they are not exaggerating. I could be wrong of course, but this time it looks like that might be the case. Im happy that Ferrari is joining Red Bull and Mercedes in the fight for the top (or so it seems), but it saddens me that McLaren might take a few months (going by what Lando is saying) to fix their issue with the breaks. I was hoping for a 4 way battle for 1st place, but a 3 way one doesn't seem so bad either. I have a gut feeling this season is going to be even more exciting that the last one.

I mean having "Hulkenback" is a silver lining but muh Seb tho!? Imagine btw that all other drivers get it as well and we have to start the first race with a full replacement roster (not actually possible). And Ricciardo :o)

Haha the new race director (well, one of the two) put out the notes for the weekend's event. Replacing Masi's 3 paragraphs on track limits from last year is a single sentence stating that the track limits are defined as the white lines in accordance with the rule book. The entire statement is “In accordance with the provisions of Article 33.3, the white lines define the track edges.”

It didn't need to be complicated. I don't know why Masi always felt the need to overcomplicate nearly everything.

Qualifying will be interesting tomorrow. Mercedes looked pretty rough today. They have definitely not got the bouncing stuff under control at all compared to the other teams. Ferrari and Red Bull both looked far better in the onboard video I saw. Alfa Romeo looks surprisingly strong while McLaren look pretty rough. Danny Ric just cannot catch a break right now. He missed most of FP2 with a water leak. The Alpha Tauri is apparently quite sensitive to temperature and was much worse in FP2, which isn't good given that FP2 was representative of race conditions. Haas look as though they may actually be in it this year.
