Yupp. That's it for Mercedes. Won the WCC and guaranteed one of their drivers as the Champion. Bottas is the only one left who can technically catch up to Hamilton, but that would include Bottas having to pick up 64 more points than Hamilton over 4 races. Hamilton would have to DNF 3 of those races for there to be a realistic chance.

Just watching it now, Ferrari getting away with it again in my eyes. I agree with Max in his interview, he got completely cleaned out by Leclerc and Vettel jumped the start, both penalties for me.

Other people have gotten away with jump starting as well. As long as the car is still within the box, and is stationary when the lights turn off, it doesn't matter if he moced a few centimeters just before. So that is entierly within previous judgements.

Leclerc tho clearly cleaned out Max. There is a bit of a difference between elbows out and wiping another car off the track, and Leclerc did the latter for sure.
But he didn't get away with it. He was given a 5 second penalty for wiping max off, and another 10 for not pitting while parts of his car was loose. He dropped to 7th.

Yes, the FIA said Vettel's car hadn't tripped the sensor that typically is used to indicate the penalty, and he hadn't moved out of his grid slot, so he didn't gain an advantage from what he did (which should be pretty clear to see I think given he lost a spot).

For Max vs. Charles, Charles admitted after that the collision was completely his fault and apologized for what happened. He also apologized for his front wing hitting Hamilton's and Norris' cars, since he wasn't aware his wing was falling apart too. He may have taken out Hamilton's front wing but the bigger damage was that chunks of his wing got lodged in Norris' brake duct, which was why his performance started getting much worse. He couldn't keep his one front brake cool. It didn't help that Albon kinda bopped him off the road either.

Wow, that ending to qualifying. Glad to see Ver shaking things up, but that punt from Bottas looked painful. His heavy breathing afterwards sounded excruciating.

God damnit. Such a stupid thing to do when you know your opponents are behind you and have to slow down as well. That first place was squarely secured when Bottas crashed.

Well, at least he didn't attempt to hide it.

Yeah, that was incredibly stupid of Verstappen and it's good he got a grid penalty for it. When it comes to yellow flags, and especially double waved yellows, there is no excuse for not slowing down, especially if you see a car in the wall like Bottas's car was.

I'm glad Bottas is okay. He sounded kinda shaken, especially with the heavy breathing. I didn't realize, but the shock from high speed impacts can actually hurt your lungs specifically a great deal, and in severe cases in a potentially deadly way. Juan Manuel Correa, the F2 driver who survived the crash that killed Anthione Hubert, was hit or miss in ICU for several days and on an ECMO machine because of lung damage. They had to delay his leg surgeries after he started developing problems with his lungs from the shock of the crash, which apparently caused acute respiratory distress syndrome. His lungs started to essentially fill with fluid from what I remember.

Correa actually stood for the first time a couple days ago. He posted a video of it. It was clearly quite difficult, but he did it non-the-less. Given the state of his right leg, it's amazing to see him stand at all. His lower right leg basically has to be rebuilt and he lost parts of his foot.

Jeez , Ferrari.... what the hell was that , the 2 stops for Lec was wrong , and letting Vet getting undercut by Lewis was even worst , I would think Vet wouldve hold on with the Hard tires if he pitted just after Lewis.

The two stop strategy was terrible this race as it turns out. Apparently Mercedes was planning on doing it too, but decided to gamble on one stop since degradation on the hards wasn't as bad as expected. Both Leclerc and Albon's races were ruined by the two stop. Both possibly could have been on the podium had they done one stop since Albon was essentially matching Vettel. Leclerc did seem like he was the slower of the two Ferraris. Can't complain about Hamilton winning this one though. Considering his gamble on tires and the fact half his floor on one side was shredded, he did pretty well. I'd imagine he'll win the title next weekend, but who knows.

I want that silly car podium ceremony thing but with Kimi. It'd be 1000x funnier. He'd just stand there deadpanning as the car rose out of the ground.

its so annoying. Ferrari did have a good car this year, but the difference in team strategy and driver's ability to maximize result is gigantic. Hamilton is one of a kind, really

Frustrating race for me as a Leclerc fanboy haha.

It's good too see how evenly matched the 3 teams were today, bodes well for 2020. Another day where Ferrari seems to be the fastest package but falls short and Mercedes overperforms.

Just echoing the usual narrative, Ferrari with a poor strategy, stopping like 20 laps earlier with Hamilton for very little benefit, but Leclerc definitely didn't drive that second stint perfectly either. I know it's difficult to model tire wear, but damn, they're like +/-50% all the time, wish there wasn't so much emphasis on it, but I guess it adds some uncertainty in a way not too many other things are able too. Of course the dream is to get driver skill to matter more, but when they are so evenly matched to begin with, having the driver make a bigger difference is tough.

Especially in a race like this, lift and coast is just so important, pushing for a few laps fries your tires so much, no easy solution as long as tires are the primary reason for pitting. Pushing hard only uses a bit more gas, so that'd be one argument for refuelling, cars could be pushed more. Another option would be something artificial like forcing pit stops for certain tires after x laps. Driving becomes a lot easier when the optimal strategy is driving at 80% the whole race, minus an overtake that you have a lap or two to do, and if you don't, your tires are done, brakes overheated, etc.

Yeah, Ferrari's strategy has been garbage for years now. I seem to remember a few years back in Australia there was a red flag (I think 2016 with the red flag from Alonso's crash if I remember right) and this was before the red flag rule about not changing tires was added. Every other team switched from softs or supersofts to mediums so they could one-stop the race once it resumed. Ferrari, who were leading, put on a new set of supersofts, which meant they needed to pit again, and they ended up throwing away what would have been their only win of the season. It was the most obvious strategy call and they still missed it. To this day they still do dumb stuff like that a lot more than they should.

Juan Manuel Correa walked yesterday! There's a video of it on his Instagram. That's nuts! Two months ago he was in an induced coma with a coin flip chance of surviving, and his right leg was essentially completely destroyed. It's crazy how fast he's improving. I read up a bit more on his surgery and they avoided having to remove part of his foot, which they thought they may have to do. Last I read they didn't think it was possible to save it completely.

edit: From what I remember, the 2021 tire spec is designed to make them much less temperature sensitive and have a much bigger operating window so the drivers can push more. They sound to be much more similar to the tires from the pre-Pirelli days. In 2010 they didn't have nearly the tire issues they do now with regards to overheating, so hopefully that will solve the issues like those we saw with the past race where people couldn't push without risking overheating.

Concept car looks brilliant, but from the text it seems like there will be lots and lots more rules, instead of fewer. Just limit the total team cost, engine size, weight and dimensions (in a manner of speaking), and let them build the fastest car.

From the F1 page:

It’s also proposed that the wheel rims will be fitted with a rotating LED display panel, to provide information to spectators, while a bodywork display panel is also proposed for the same reason

And also:

There will also be the introduction of certain standardised parts (such as fuel pumps), parts that must have a prescribed design (such as wheel covers)

That was a weird race. Hamilton won the championship, which I kinda expected. Bottas drove quite well. Ferrari were absolutely nowhere. That rumour about them having to stop doing trickery with fuel flow appears true based on how slow they suddenly are (it's a lot like 2015 where a similar thing happened. Vettel was crazy fast in Malaysia, Kimi was super fast in Bahrain. Then there was a rule clarification and they were nowhere after that).

Albon did crazy well to get back to 5th given he had to 3-stop. From my rough estimate, he did something like 20 overtakes. It's not like Gasly where Gasly was slow and would randomly get stuck behind Toro Rossos or Racing Points. After that third stop, I figured there was no way Albon would get back to 5th since there were only 10-15 laps left, but then he did so in like 6 laps or something like that, roughly a person per lap. I can't see him being demoted back to Toro Rosso at this point. Marko already said Albon, Gasly, and Kvyat were all signed for next year, but they just hadn't decided where each would go. Pretty crazy for a guy who didn't find out he was F1 until February, and hadn't driven an F1 car before.

Yeah, kinda like the 2009 wheel covers.

edit: Huh, the reason Albon had that bizarre strategy was because they found that one of his sets of hard tires had a crack in a tire after he did an install lap on them so they couldn't use the set at all. That's why he had to go for mediums after his first lap sandwich incident rather than hards, which would have saved him a pitstop.
