Leclerc also was on a used engine due to FP3 issue and seb had suspension damage so it's somewhat hard to judge where they were.

Vettels car was obviously broken from the beginning. Leclerc was driving in an old engine and only spec 2. Both had no grip at all which changed for Leclerc after the pitstop showing it was a tyre problem.

They might have been cheating. They might not have. But this was probably the least indicative race of all time to come to the conclusion that they were cheating.

Yes, you are correct. Binotto, a while after, explained Ferrari's weekend and what had happened, and that perspective certainly made the claims about them abusing a rule seem off. Firstly and most importantly, they set their cars up to be higher downforce so they could match Mercedes in the corners rather than sacrifice cornering speeds for faster straight-line speed like they had at previous races. Like you said, he mentioned Leclerc was on an engine from before the summer break that was an older spec which put him at a power disadvantage at a high speed track like COTA. He also pointed out that Vettel was on pace with Bottas in qualifying, and that Vettel himself admitted that he took a couple corners easy since he assumed his second lap would be faster and just did a safe banker lap, and could have been 3-4 tenths of a second faster had he wanted to. Binotto also mentioned that Ferrari didn't do any adjustments to their engines in accordance to this new technical directive. Also like you mentioned, Leclerc pointed that he had issues with tire temperature during the race, and he just straight up couldn't get his first set to work nicely at all and had to switch up his strategy to get off that set of tires early.

In the past, I would have put more weight into the complaint about Ferrari's engine, but they are very much a different team under Binotto. He's a much more straightforward person and I can't see him encouraging his team to do anything like this. Ferrari had an engine advantage last year too that seemed to continue into this year, and teams claimed they were cheating with their battery system but the FIA said that Ferrari's system was completely legal.

As more was coming out about what Red Bull was claiming, it started to look more and more unrealistic. One of the claims was supposedly that Ferrari were somehow electronically interfering with their fuel sensor, which allowed them to temporarily put more fuel through on straights. One would think the FIA could pick that up pretty easily.

Please stop with the random nonsense tire % indicators. They're just pure bullshit, and adds nothing to the excitement.

Vettel had no need to do that. Why would Merc pit? No time to restart!

Edit: Quite an end to the race, Gasly seems happy haha. Great drive from Sainz, could be on podium soon.

Half the grid under investigation at the end here.. The only real secure positions are first and second. Everything else could get shuffled massively.

crazy race. Crazy. Gasly had a fantastic weekend, completely deserved P2. Max was super strong.
The most annoying thing was 6-lap long safety car when Bottas stopped with NO debris right next to the tow-truck and 2-lap long safety car when 3 cars crashed/broke with lots of debris on the track. No logic whatsoever.

What the fuck was with the Sky commentary on that Albon/Hamilton crash? Even Hamilton admitted fault for it but the Croft and Brundle immediately blamed Albon and justified Hamilton crashing into Albon by saying that Albon left the door open. That's the opposite of how it should be. If Hamilton has space as they implied, then he should have no excuse for hitting Albon. It was an incredibly sloppy overtake attempt and even Hamilton knew it, as he said when he started his podium interview.

It was a fun race, but man do I wish we could have the BBC/Channel 4 people instead of Brundle and Croft. They're the worst, especially Croft. He yelled for like 4 laps straight at the start. The yelling doesn't make the race any better. It's just irritating.

The logic is sound: Entertainment.

For the first safety car, there was a lot of lapped cars who had to get unlapped and reach the back of the queue, before they could restart. That added 2 rounds alone.

The second safety car was released in semi-unsafe conditions so we could get an exciting end to the race. If that had been in the middle of the race, we would have seen 2 more laps of safety car there as well.

Hamilton was at fault, but Albon put Hamilton there by opening the door wide open. So even if Hamilton gets a penalty, Albon is still to blame for letting him into that position in the first place. It's like if you leave your home door unlocked at night. Yes, the thief is still to blame for stealing your shit, but you should have locked that door in the first place.

I don't mind Brundle and Croft at all. They're excited, which is fine. I don't blame you if that doesn't suite you, but it's just a style of commentary which many others appreciate. It's not that long ago since someone on this forum got irritated at Tastosis for being "too loud and obnoxious". Sure, it might not suite you, but it's popular for a reason.

That said, they do tend to do mistakes here and there, which is human I guess, but annoying nevertheless. Mistaking Max and Albon in the middle of this race for instance. And last race they made like 5 positional mistakes in the opening lap alone.

I can understand liking them. My issue is mostly with Croft. Brundle's fine and he did great with other commentators like Murray and James Allen. Croft gets exhausting to listen to because he feels the need to hype literally everything all the time and never let there be a moment of quiet. He also doesn't just make the odd mistake. If you actually listen to what he says, he makes a lot of mistakes. He frequently misidentifies cars despite them being far easier to identify in the past thanks to the new numbering regulations and he is often wrong when it comes to collisions and the like. Also, he always goes for the most controversial take possible on everything even when it's abundantly clear that he's wrong. It's TMZ-level stuff and it's irritating.

You can be a hype commentator without having to shout non-stop. James Allen and Ben Edwards both were excellent at that. They got excited for genuinely exciting moments but were able to turn it down a notch when need be for the slower portions of the race. Croft's need to instead fill any dead time in the race with stupid hypotheticals rather than actually commenting on the race as it is also has the effect of making it so the viewer misses out on a lot of things happening. If rather than spending 10 minutes speculating on the strategies of the top 6, he instead focused on the midfield, it'd be far more entertaining. As it is, the Sky people, and the F1 show directors in general, essentially ignore the midfield unless the camera shows anything from it. Like Sainz had an insane race today but we barely heard about it, and barely saw anything from it. He overtook a ton of people and we only saw a couple of shots of him at most.

im not an idiot and could also create this explanation, which is correct. However, i challenge the premise, that SAFETY car's presence on the track should be directed by entertainment factor.

Hamilton awarded a 5 sec penalty, pushing him down to 7th, and Sains to third. No word yet on the people who used DRS under yellow flag, or if anything about Vettel and Leclerc, tho the latter is kinda pointless since they both DNFed.

Vettel only needs 2 more points for a race ban. In that regard its probably lucky that it was Charles he hit.
