That drive from Albon was nuts. I was watching it closely since there wasn't much going on in the second half of the race. Albon was roughly matching the McLarens in a Williams with nearly 20 lap older hard tires. I wasn't expecting him to get a point at the end but he somehow managed. P20 to P10 in what is arguably the worst or second worst car is quite a result. They did get a bit lucky with DNFs and safety cars, but given how slow the Williams car is, these types of strategies are their best chance and they made it work.

Not a great start for the season for Max. He's pretty far on the backfoot by now. He'll have to win the next 7 races to get on par with Leclerc, which, considering Leclerc's and Ferrari's pace atm, isn't going to be an easy task

Not right after u set a fastest lap Guess its Honda engines today and not Red Bull power trains ^%$#$#%$#@%$#%$$^ Masterclass pit strategy from Williams? Making Albon pit at the penultimate lap, hoping for Leclerc to finish the race before Albon can lose too much places/ time He saved 10th by 0.3 seconds Can anyone explain why Albon pitted at all, or how that all worked? Still a bit of a noob as it comes to this era of F1

Still a bit of a noob as it comes to this era of F1 There is a rule that drivers must use two or more tire compounds in any dry race. Because of this, in effect a pit stop is mandatory (since they have two use two tire compounds and you can't mix different tire compounds on your car) unless it rains at any point which causes the rule to be discarded. Further, you can't pit on the last lap to fulfill the requirement (there's a rule stating that you've only officially used a tire compound after you've left the pit lane with the tires on your car, which wouldn't be possible on the last lap since you wouldn't be racing with those tires on as you would be finishing the race in the pit lane. There's a bunch of other weird rules around pitting on the last lap but it all boils down to "you can't pit when finishing the race unless your car is broken"), which is why Albon pitted when he was finishing his second last lap rather than pitting as he was crossing the finish line at the end of his race. Basically, if you start on the hard tires, at some point in the race you have to pit and put on medium or soft tires. In Alex's case he started on the hard tires then pitted for soft tires. This fulfilled the requirement. Not fulfilling this requirement causes disqualification unless the race is red flagged and not restarted. In that situation I think it's left to the stewards' discretion for what has to be done. I'm not sure why the Sky people were talking like finishing without pitting was an option for Alex. The rules are pretty clear.

I'm still not a big fan of how the results of it influence the main race's starting order. These sprints have a tendency to erase outlier qualifying performances and we usually end up with the cars somewhat near their expected place based on car performance, which is what happened here and last year. Apparently for next year they are leaning towards getting rid of the sprint race dictating the main race's starting order, which I think is a good move. Charles and several other drivers have all said that's what they would like to see also. The way sprints are right now force drivers to be somewhat risk-averse since otherwise they can end up like Zhou and lose out on track position for starting the main race. Mercedes look completely lost. Neither Hamilton nor Russell made up any notable ground to speak of. Apparently this is the first time since Japan 2012 that both Mercedes have failed to get to Q3. With how bad the sprint went for Mercedes, they're going to have to either pull off some strategic brilliance or hope that rain or a safety car can put them in contention. On pure performance they're just not there at all.

Bit annoying commentators advocating for it so much as well. Maybe I'm imagining things it but it feels kinda forced when they do it.

edit: Hah! That aged like milk. Why mediums tho?! They do this mistake EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's still a cold and damp track, why the heck would you not put on the softs?! edit2: All mediums. Guess this is why I'm not an F1 strategist. I'm clearly wrong
