Bird rights only mean something to us, the fans, in that it means the team can re-sign that player and go over the salary cap.
The franchise-designated player or w/e the name is that can be given to players who make one of the all-nba teams to a player they drafted is new along with some other things.
Among these is why PG-13 has/had(?) a dilemma. He wants to say in IND if he makes one of these teams. But if he doesn't, which is more likely given the talent at his position this season, then that opens up more possibilities w/o giving up that guaranteed $$.
These are the fun CBA things that we will see the outcome of over the next few seasons. Cousins was the first domino for sure.

does any one know why Tucker lost his starting job in Phoenix?

I also wonder if it will open up sign and trades, like the Pacers sign pg-13 to that massive deal then trade him... True, very interested now to hear/see how sign-and-trades would work for those players or even if/how they are allowed to be traded.
And ya if the changes don't make the majority of stars stay, then it definitely did not do its intended job seeing as this was put in specifically b/c of Kevin Durant.

I don't see how that change would solve the Durant problem. Star players aren't stupid. They know that accepting more money means less money for their supporting cast. More money available isn't going to sway a star who left for other reasons. Especially if said star left an OKC team that has self-induced money problems.

Part of the reasoning to do it during these next few years and in this CBA is b/c of the rise in the salary-cap max though. If the salary cap doesn't rise as much as expected over the next w/e amount of years, then ya I could see it still being a problem like that.

I'm pretty sure the huge jump in the salary cap was because of the new tv contract. Now that we are in the middle of that tv contract, the salary cap won't rise that much anymore. In fact, I've seen some projections that actually have it dropping in the next few years.
Then there's the likely scenario that future tv contracts won't be as rich, which will further lower the salary cap. The current CBA was signed before the impact of cord cutting really hit media companies hard. Disney, for example, has had its earnings pressured by ESPN's declining performance. I doubt that these companies would bid so much for tv rights when their revenue is declining.

I honestly don't know why these guys aren't selling internet only sports packages. There's a ton of people, especially young men, who don't want cable but would watch sports on their computers. It's not like the internet providers aren't also the cable providers in most cases.

everyone? LOL. no they are not. another team owned by Rogers Communications: the 2015 Blue Jays sold the farm to "win now". Interesting the engineer of all those trades was gone shortly after the 2015 season was over. The Brooklyn Nets traded away a lot of picks for a "win now" with their new Russian billionaire owner guy.

Rogers offers internet, TV, Cable, cell service , they own 42.5% of the Raptors etc etc etc. I think the Rogers Sportsnet internet only sports package is ~$24/month USD. http://www.canadianbusiness.com/innovation/rogers-gambles-on-a-standalone-digital-streaming-sports-channel/

The Knicks and Yankees ( esp. pre-cashman) sell off the future for the short term a lot as well. I think the Knicks had zero draft picks in 2016. You said "everyone" and that's clearly false so let's just leave it at that. Its a common theme throughout pro sports including the NBA and the Atlantic division where 2 of the teams in the division have abandoned long term vision for short term gain.
Demarre Carroll five minute major for elbowing; time of the penalty 9:37 of the 2nd quarter. i really like how the referees handed out all those technicals to gain back control of the game... it was getting chippy.

James Young's 5 points tonight points to the clairvoyant 5 year plan that the MLSE is implementing.

very few handshakes and lots of pissed off looks after the Raptors//Celtics game tonight. I love it. Let me quote Bob Cole: "folks, these 2 teams don't like each other"
BTW: regarding the Canadian internet only sports package.. its $20/USD a month. One bad thing is that when you watch it.. its about 70 seconds behind the actual live game. So you can't be surfing the ESPN web site while watching the "live games" on "SportsNet NOW". Overall, i really like "Sportsnet NOW", but that 70 second delay really sucks balls.

since before the start of the season the yapping back and forth between the Raps and Celts has been going on. More yapping after last night's game. Here is Thomas : “It was intentional. Did you see it? Yeah, that’s not a basketball play by any means. Guys who aren’t factors in games do that. It is what it is. You can’t do nothing in this league anymore,” Thomas said. “It’s not like back in the day where you can put your hands up and fight a guy. You can’t do that. But that was not a basketball play whatsoever and that’s not cool that he did that. So that’s what happened after.”
umm ya, as if Thomas would fight Carroll.

The George Steinbrenner era was really bad. He just spent his way out of his mistakes. I used them to point out the theme of selling out the future for the present is a timeless tactic in pro sports. The other poster was claiming it rarely or never occurs.
