He performed so well in Europe, but looked like absolute shit in the WC when he needed to really carry his team because of the lack of quality around him. Ronaldo was injured in the WC.

Oh, and to Steveling: I don't want to take anything away from Buffon. But Neuer also shows these kind of saves, he just doesn't get that many opportunites because he plays in such a great team. But every time he is needed, he delivers. Recent examples: These are just 2 examples from the last games while you showed a Buffon all-time video, so please don't compare. I just wanted to emphasize that Neuer is indeed a great goalkeeper and very consistent.

The CL comes around every year and you can just throw money at the problem and gobble up as much great talent as you can find. You can't do that with a WC that comes around once every 4 years. That's a questionable statement. At least in CL anyone can throw money for a chance to win it, and towards the end the competition is really tight. In WC if your team isn't called Germany, Brazil or Italy you can't win. I disagree with both statements. Throwing money at the problem doesnt win you CL's. It just so happens that people with money are right up there. At that level throwing money around is not much of a differentiatior. As for the worldcup. Thats pretty straightforward. It is difficult by virtue of scarcity. Nothing more.

Instead we beat the stacked Bayern team on penalties with our worst team in their own backyard. Money doesn't work in Champions League due to the teams in it are all in their due to being a decent side, organized and have at a first 11 of world class nature. Also we were above average English team ![]()

Our best squads in their prime got beaten by very unlucky circumstances. Barcelona, slip due to shite pitch in Russia and of course the "ghost goal". Those 3 times could have all ended in Chelsea winning or getting to the final. Instead we beat the stacked Bayern team on penalties with our worst team in their own backyard. So Madrid was (officially) only above average for 20 years instead of 50 as I thought. No idea how to know for the first 30 years, but they actually did win a lot of Spain Copas.

Hardaker, who viewed the notion of European competition with the disdain Margaret Thatcher displayed for the European Parliament, bullied Chelsea chairman and Football League president Joe Mears into withdrawing from the original European Cup competition won by Real Madrid. Source I can't believe I'm defending Chelsea here, but the criticism is unwarranted. They won the League Cup once, the FA Cup twice, the Cup Winners' Cup once, and the UEFA Super Cup in the late 90s. And they got to the quarterfinals of the CL the one time they competed in it. And they had some amazing players like Gianfranco Zola.

I'm sry, how can you say that chelsea was a big club and then list these "achievements" to back up that claim. It actually proves the opposite.
