I was unaware there was state funding money involved with the German football clubs so that’s something interesting I might try and read about. I also thought German clubs where not allowed deficit spending but some of you are talking about clubs having heavy debts. Am I wrong about that rule or is it quite new and the clubs have historic debt they still have to service? I guess it also could possibly come from things like building stadiums and infrastructure. I also like the suggestion that Dortmund aren’t a major European club just because they play in yellow. I guess that explains Norwich’s lack of European titles. German clubs are allowed to take on debt if they can show to the FA that the debt will not cause financial problems. There aren't really teams with huge amounts of debt in Germany as far as I know. BVB is one of the largest debtors and they are only at 12% debt to value according to Forbes, which would be considered very little in any other business. There is no state funding involved in professional football clubs.

There is no state funding involved in professional football clubs. Thank you for clearing up the debt situation a little bit. But if the debts are all quite low in my mind debt can’t be that much of a factor in determining why Munchen are that more wealthy than the rest of the league. I also didn't think it sound right that there would be state money going to into private football clubs. But I was confused by this comment: On November 02 2014 20:59 Dingodile wrote: BvB is already behind at first step. Germany has 16 states, every state give money to cities (see it as "attendance fee") within that state. In the 1.Bundesliga Dortmund is located in (state) Nordhrein-Westfalen with Köln, Schalke, Leverkusen, Gladbach. Few years ago with more teams like Duisburg, Düsseldorf etc. State Bayern has Bayern, Augsburg and Nürnberg this year (actually a bad year for FC Bayern Muenchen this time if we talk about money). If we say every state pays 100M€ every year (FC Bayern gets 100/3, BvB only 100/5 this year). Few states have exception like Bremen, Hamburg and Berlin (state=city). Perhaps he was just implying that as a percentage of the local area Munchen have less competition for the punters than other clubs in the Bundesliga. But that would need to take into consideration that the Ruhr has a much larger population.
