the Dutch speed skating coach is bang on the money with this quote. some of the other comments were way off base. Unless the NHL starts to clean up its act in a real hurry then they are in the exact same position as the NFL. Canadian parents are steering their kids away from hockey because of how dangerous it has become. to me the above quoted comment applies to the NHL just as much as the NFL.

Even trashes American Football. LOL oh man the comments are killing me. People so ass-mad. I kind of agree with what he is saying (though not necessarily about speed skating). I wish we had more focus on and more of the top athletes going towards more global sports instead of the NFL and NBA. Global competition is so much more fun than "National Championships".

I'd think there's enough athletes to go around really. I'm sure tons of the rest of the world bests athletes focus on football/soccer and whatever else they play as well. Although I suppose it's a tad different because the rest of the world presumably has more interest in global/Olympic events considering, outside of the Olympics, America has essentially zero popular interest. Anyway that coaches argument is just dumb for the most part. That's like saying maybe the dutch should stop playing soccer so Michael Phelps won't single handedly win more gold medals in the summer olympics than their entire nation.

He's a hero and partly the country's asset, so expect much more from him as an athlete and coach too!

The main point is that you can't expect to be a top competitor in a sport, if you don't care about it (outside olympics), don't invest in it, and don't have a serious competition locally/nationally - and shouldnt blame bad results on the quality of a suit. Conversely, the us is quite good at sports that they do care about, such as football and basketball ;-). The way he worded it might be a bit erm controversial ig guess...
