Of course, if they win I'll be happy but I just don't see that happening. Their defense is okay this tournament but the offensive play is just awful. Sure, Kovalchuk, Ovechkin and Malkin may be top tier NHL players, but I just don't see it here. The only one making good plays is Datsyuk.
It's pretty hilarious too, since for some reason, the NHL players of the other teams are playing really well. I don't understand what's going on with the Russian team at all. I mean, losing against USA with that top tier offensive is just flat out embarrassing. Every single playing in the Russian lineup is a star and what do we see? Nothing. Measly 1-0 victory against Slovakia who are playing awfully this tournament and loss vs USA, who we are simply supposed to win against.
They have to shape up, or I fear we are going to suffer a horrible defeat at the hands of Finland, who aren't bad (unlike the teams we've faced before) and have a record of defeating Russia in important tournaments.
You REALLY overestimate Russia.

National teams sometimes "retire" the #s of great players.
Jari Kurri's #17 is retired by Finland. Vladislav Tretiak's #20 is retired by Russia even though he played for the USSR.
there are more #s that can't be used... those are 2 quick examples.

since 1972, the only "best on best" that Russia/USSR has won is the 1981 "Canada Cup". they came close in 1987 and 1998 though. but their only real "win" in "best on best" is 1981
The Soviet Union had a long record of big wins against non professional opponents which causes many to over-estimate them.

On team Canada that isn't the case for some players, just weird I guess.

I don't know all their numbers off by heart in the NHL but I'd wager that the guys who have different number on the National teams use that number because someone on there club team that's been in the league longer is wearing the number they want.

Perry is one that comes to mind, I believe he is wearing 24 in the olympics but I think he wears 10 on the ducks.

sometimes player has a favorite number which is free to take in national team and is already taken in the NHL team. And sometimes the opposite.

Patrick Sharp is older then Perry so Sharp gets the #10.
Jamie Benn wears 14 on the stars but Kunitz is older so Benn has 22. Probably a few more examples but I am too lazy to look for more haha

You think Crosby has been playing well? What about Nicklas Bäckström or Patrick Kane (other then when playing with Pavelski).
Anyway, it seems like Ekman-Larsson will be replaced by Edler, as the defense partner with Erik Karlsson. Edler and Karlsson together. I'm proper scared for our defense now.

Hahaha Go Slovenia!!! Pin those Swedes in their zone!

Only zone time Slovenia has had was with them on the ice. Twice now with those two on the ice Slovenia is able to establish zone time and get some chances

Uhhhg that goal has joe louis arena written all over it. Bounce shot off the boards to the other side of the net and Steen has a 6x4 net to put the puck into
|
If we continue to defend and then score our chances we might even have a chance.
Go go Slovenia.

Go go Slovenia. Well, I think it's midnight. I think the Slovenians need to wear line green helmets when they have the blue jerseys on.
Sweden is too calm, too cool and execute everything to near perfection. I do not envy their opponents.

Bloody country I live in. Can't watch the game nor listen to it on radio

They are, but I'm a bit spoilt. Usually national television handle Olympics, and then I could have streamed it at work. I ain't paying the private company for that service. The national radio is supposed to broadcast but their internet broadcast is down
Edit: 5-0 to Sweden in the end. Sweden goes to semi.

The Olympics went commercial this year so not everyone has got the required channels. Not cool. Like in the previous games the Swedes looked comfortable but not impressive. Really looking forward to the next game against Finland or Russia. Oh boy.

I think Finland wins today. Finland is more rested and Rask will keep them almost scoreless. Finland wins 3-1.
|
Should be a good game to come. I think I want the most entertaining semi against Sweden so whoever can do that with Finland and Russia hopefully goes through
Although now that I think about it, a rematch of the Torino 2006 games between Finland and Sweden with the accompanied riots would be good, too.
