But again being middle tier in an 80,000 seater stadium and seeing the players feel so close it pretty sick. I remember our first season we had it and it was Man utd vs Birmingham opening day and big Owen came off the bench to play the last 10 minutes and me and my brother were like haha GO ON OWEN LAD!! xD funny times. Haven't been up since then which was like 2009? or something? But again very impressive.
Haha I bet.
But you are making me jealous haha. Seeing players up close along with the size of the stadiums is something that I really need to experience in England. Here in the Netherlands most stadiums are just a bit too small and of the two well sized stadiums, at Feyenoord at least there is a trench between the pitch and the crowd. (Not sure about the Amsterdam Arena as Feyenoord fans aren't allowed in the stadium, but google tells me that they don't have a trench so it should be better).

They did have a trench and still do at some points in the stadium but the last couple of years they filled them up with more seats

No it's not just because of football attendance and TV viewership increasing. A lot of the inflation also comes from rich people buying a club and pumping a massive amount of money in the club like City, PSG and Monaco. These clubs had to pay silly amounts of money to get good players and just like in the normal economy when you're rapidly increasing the money supply you'll get a ton of inflation.

And it's oh so easy to take the moral (and very annoying) high ground here by arguing semantics like a fucking troll. It's like comparing one surgeon to if Leonardo da Vinci should have existed or not. Lionel Messi (or C. Ronaldo for all I care) brings joy to millions of people around the world, making the world a better place, bringing people together with his skills. Joy and happiness is the best medicine for any human being. I think Lionel Messi has a 1000fold (or any other big number) bigger influence on the state of health/happiness in the world than one surgeon does. I'm not even sure why I even have to explain it to someone as short-sighted as you. Especially the comment on 'if you have never been in a situation where it mattered'. How would you know? Get off the damn high horse and shut the fuck up. I think its kinda sad that the health and happiness of people worldwide is in the hands of guys being paid millions. Its kinda like the situation with Novak Djokovic in my country. The media have raised him to demi-god status 'Djokovic, fearless leader of the Serbs'. It's apparently the top news story in the country if he buys a new pair of socks, or his fiancee takes a tram instead of a limousine because 'Nole cares about the little people'. The guys a great tennis player, and yes he represents our country well, maybe even a few people think that we might not be a tribal people that skin their enemies alive, eat their insides and wear their skins afterwards because of him. Good for him/us. But I know my view of Argentina will stay the same no matter how many Messi's pop up.
But the media here have turned him into a fictional character, when the great patriot Nole wins, you, the little man sitting in front of his tv have also won. Suddenly, your life isn't so bad - your minimum wage isn't so minimum, your electricity company isn't raping you with tariffs, children on the street aren't stabbing each other with knives, the police aren't bigger criminals than the criminals themselves. You won't die before you reach your pension, your children have a future, your son isn't doing drugs and your daughter isn't whoring herself out to the first criminal she see's for three cocktails. If Nole is a winner, you are a winner because Nole is a Serb and guess what? You are a Serb too.
But you see, when Djokovic wins a grand slam, he won it... not you. I can't express enough how wrong it is for your happiness to depend on something like sports, for you to not end up like that guy in Nigeria that killed himself because Utd lost two games in a row. That bin man that plays for a 4th league club deserves more respect from you than Messi because at least he picks up the trash in front of your house.

I obviously don't think a random David Miller from Man C or whatever his first name is is more important than a surgeon.
And just to add to that, I dont know about Europe, from my part of the world (in asia) surplus of surgeons who if given the oppurtunity would probably put everyone in most countries out of business, They are that good, its the only way to be successful because medicine in really the only sector that has high standards in alot of the subcontinent in terms of training.
They already taking over the USA lulz, If europeans let anyone but europeans become doctors in their countries you would have plenty of surgeons.

That is a very selfish and demeaning outlook on people who work hard and succeed. At the end of the day role models and success inspire people to do better, or do you get inspired to take out your fucking trash by the bin man everyday ?
Didnt think so. I would kill to have Nole be from my country, ingrates like you dont deserve people like that.
No one was suggesting that peoples happiness "depends" on sports personalities doing well. But why cant that be a positive to the overall level of happiness period ? And why cant sharing in their failures and success albiet vicariously be a good thing ?
Killing yourself because United lost isnt someone who was happy in the first place, that is an illness, an obsession. No one condones that and too much of any sort of attachment is a bad thing sure but a trashman > Nole ? Come the fuck on.

No, of course Djokovic worked hard to succeed. He pissed blood for years and trained every day to get where he is a deserves everything he has gotten. Its the people that can't run 100m without falling over, who would give up after the first 3 points thinking Novak's success is somehow their success that bugs me.

Salaries and general accounting in sports/entertainment is a very broad subject. I blame capitalism, .

Come on, don't judge people based on their success/salary.

A big reason for the lack of doctors in the Netherlands is that they only let an X amount of people study medicine. A lot of people who want to are just told to fuck off basically and go do something else.

I really need to try and go to some Toronto FC games now, since they might actually be good. Hopefully I can go when they play the Red Bulls, so I can see Henry :3
It's also my dream to go on a pilgrimage and see Arsenal play at the Emirates at least once in my lifetime.

Don't get me wrong, Messi does exceptional things, and he is worth his money for his sponsors and club, but he is not the bringer of world peace and happiness, that's just as silly. People will always find idols.

It wouldn't matter if there was no Messi, as long as skill differences between the players are evident. The influence of billionaires buying clubs is only increasing those salaries, which isn't a problem in itself (it's creating unfair competition though, that's why Vitesse sucks, Pande! ).

I'm sure there are surgeons that make millions a year, just like there are footballers that make 10k a year. Lets just say a surgeon and a footballer doge paying taxes, one of them won't even get a little square in a newspaper, the other will have 50 facebook pages #freegenericfootballer.

AFAIK CRonaldo gets 18M per year right now, free of taxes. And since he has been in Spain for over... 4? years, the taxes are about 50%. So Madrid pays about 36M a year.
And Barça keep insisting the best player must earn as the best...
Edit: This is in € of course. Not pounds.
