What the... That was a wierd ending all the way!

I don't get why Moyes always looks defeated. When Sunderland scored in overtime he wasn't even angry. I know that they had basically lost there and then but that doesn't matter in sports. You always fight until the time is out, and that goes for a manager as well.

I think he is feeling a horrific cocktail of disillusionment and pressure at the moment. Plus he seems to be getting some awful luck of late lol.

I can totally agree that messi > 1 random surgeon, but that's not a fair comparison. I'm pretty certain the 3000th best football player also makes more than the 3000th best surgeon.

I just think it would be sweet if players made way less because then there would be no justification for ticket prices etc constantly increasing, and the people you'd see at the stadium every matchday would be the ones who cared the most about being there, not the ones who can afford to be there. And then teams like united barcelona all the big giants who could fill a couple stadiums for big games could have like, apart from season card holders, hold lotteries for the rest of their spots, el bulli style, and we would all be better off. And then, mid-tier teams could actually elevate themselves by having long term smart solutions involving brilliant coaches and game plans and youth development, instead of the only viable option for turning a team into a top tier team being to let some jackass with way too much money which he prolly got through semi-illegal ways in the first place buy the team and further inflate the market

I think it's fairer to compare athletes to other public figures such as entertainers, or ones who are equally important to big businesses such as CEOs. In those cases athletes are not really overpaid, especially considering the average length of their careers. Even a brain surgeon can keep practicing till he's 60 probably.

So like, isn't Mata a #10 and only a #10? Moyes would have to change the entire formation to fit him in with Rooney, and if not then Kagawa will never play another game. Mata is obviously class but I'm not sure if he solves anything.

and yes yes I understand supply and demand and in general I think that's a fair system, I just don't think it actually works out with global entertainment actors because they end up with a way bigger slice than what I personally feel is "just". And I think that sucks. But oh well.

That's capitalism I guess. I'm pretty certain football's biggest contracts are still smaller than baseball's. And GMs in baseball have a lot more quantitative evidence to base their decisions. There's even a stat that tells you exactly how much a player should be paid not considering supply and demand. I imagine if football had that then the contracts would be even bigger since football players have generally greater individual impact on wins/losses. The sport is too big for a salary cap nor would it benefit from one I think.

Even if the salaries are similar, the total value of the contracts are definitely lower, because contracts can't last longer than five years, due to the EU. In baseball, it's not uncommon to see 6, 7, even 10 year contracts.

The soccernet article makes a lot of sense. United doesn't have the midfielders to play a 4-3-1-2, there's a bunch of wingers who would be useless in a formation without wingers, if Januzai goes back to a #10 role he'd be stuck behind Mata, it's risky to change a system in the middle of the season for just one player. Mata isn't the type of player to track back and defend when playing out wide. Imo this makes move makes no sense but I am still excited to see Mata play.
