Getting the headlines today is the concept of “orange” cards that would send players, essentially, to the equivalent of hockey’s penalty box. Worse than a yellow but better than a red, the card is an interesting idea but there’s a larger idea here: could the campaigns to replace Sepp Blatter produce a better football? Champagne is just one man up for the job and wants to see a proper, televised debate between all candidates. With ideas like his, in all honesty I can’t wait to see what else is proffered. I can totally agree that messi > 1 random surgeon, but that's not a fair comparison. I'm pretty certain the 3000th best football player also makes more than the 3000th best surgeon. Probably, but the median average for surgeons is much higher, then again they're job at a median level is way more valuable and significantly harder to become competent at. Still, its an apples to oranges comparison, sure if entertainers make more than life savers and healers you could find something wrong from some moral high horse. but entertainers reach more people than surgeons do. Are football wages silly ? Absolutely, but from a personal and sustainability perspective and really nothing more than opinion coming from me or anyone else. Should they make less ? Not for me to say. The reality is a player is worth what someone is willing to pay for him. The one with the dough decides their worth not us. One can only have faith that the people dishing it out arent complete morons.

The big downside I guess is that ticket prices seem to be really high.

Transfer News Chelsea are planning a renewed attempt to sign Wayne Rooney in the summer in the belief that his expiring contract will enable them to get him on the cheap. Arsenal will make a last-ditch push to buy Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler now rather than risk getting caught up in a summer bidding war. Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone is willing to pay Chelsea £20million for goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is in his third season on loan at the Spanish side. Jose Mourinho wants to land Real Sociedad striker Antoine Griezmann after flogging Juan Mata to Manchester United. Chelsea have offered Basel £11 million to try to stop Mohamed Salah's move to Liverpool. Jackson Martinez has been linked with Arsenal but he is set to sign a new contract at Porto next week. West Ham are considering loan moves for Catania forward Maxi Lopez and Roma striker Marco Borriello. Liverpool and AC Milan are interested in a summer deal for Porto forward Juan Iturbe, who is currently on loan at Verona. Barcelona want to agree a new deal within a week for Martin Montoya, who has been linked with Liverpool. Paris Saint Germain want Miralem Pjanic and could offer Javier Pastore plus cash to Roma in exchange. Borussia Dortmund are not in for £6million-rated Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia. Newcastle will have to "pay what Real Madrid paid for Gareth Bale" to get Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella this month, claims the French club's president. Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is a £3.5million target for AC Milan.

Sacrificing your academic and social life as well as your youth for a return of 60k per year is relatively dumb. Sacrificing it for the small chance to be a superstar and earn millions makes more sense and seems fairer. I think the payoff is right.

Bartomeu should be his successor until June and the new elections. To all those who doubted that Neymar costed a lot more than what they said... :D

A Spanish judge agreed on Wednesday to hear a lawsuit brought by a Barcelona club member against president Sandro Rosell regarding the cost of the transfer for Brazil striker Neymar. On Monday, Rosell insisted the total cost of 57 million euros (then $74-million) to bring Neymar from Brazilian club Santos announced at the player’s presentation last June was correct. Cases alleges the amount paid by the Spanish champions was higher. Cases told El Pais newspaper on Monday “the lawsuit is against Rosell, not against Barca.” “We don’t think that somebody kept the money,” Cases said. “We only want to know how they account for the expenditures, because it isn’t clear.” Barcelona is owned by its more than 160,000 members, who elect a president and governing board. Barcelona earned 483 million euros ($643-million) in revenue in 2011-12, second only to fierce rival Real Madrid, according to accountancy firm Deloitte. Source

There is a ton of risk in trying to be a football player and only a small percentage of those who try end up actually making it. Those who make it then have a relatively short career. Sacrificing your academic and social life as well as your youth for a return of 60k per year is relatively dumb. If you try to be a football player and fail you will know by the time you're what, 21? Still plenty of time to make another career of yourself - I have a good friend who is a surgeon who decided to become one at 22.

And even 60k a year might be worth it if you realise that the median wage in NL is 33.5k. And we're a country with quite high wages. It's not like you're unable to do any other work after you retired either.
