College kind of sucks for grooming football talent though, they don't play professionally until 22 most of the time and the US youth/college level puts so much emphasis on physical ability that they undervalue football intelligence. Something that the German/Spanish level have done really well. Yeah, I hate that university sports are such a big part of American culture. All of our sports need academies, or at least something like the minor leagues in baseball. @ Pande: Sorry, I don't really know. I don't follow college football, and I don't pay much attention to MLS either. @ Above: I hope you don't wear shoes, or own a cell phone.

After 90 days without pay, according to the regulations of the International Federation, a player is free to break his contract. But Abdeslam’s troubles had not ended for all that. When FIFA passed on his request to the Federation, which then passed it on to the club, while the player was trying by every means to open the doors of dialogue with his club, while he had not received the smallest amount of money since returning to the club, it was a phone call that left him as groggy as a boxer in his corner after escaping a knock out. ‘To work in Qatar, it is necessary to be sponsored by a Qatari. I was sponsored by a member of my first club, Lekhwiya. It was that person, obviously, who called to tell me I would get my exit visa on one condition only: that I withdraw my complaint to FIFA!’ No pay - check Unable to leave - check what else is required?

We already knew that Qatar was a terrible country (pretty much the same as with the Olympic Games in Beijing), but they still gave them the World Cup... Let's do terrible things, not respect human rights and be rewarded with big marketing events that will promote our country so we can earn even more money so we can do things even worse because we become more powerful...

While I agree with the sentiment, I don't think the World Cup is going to bring Qatar much money. In fact, like many other middle eastern projects, it may just been a huge money sink instead.

Arab busineses have a pretty scummy culture in general but this guy just got shafted because he got stuck in a bad deal where he got strong armed. Everyone who knows anything about visiting arab countries and working there should have a pretty good idea of what a bitch it is to have some sort of legal status if you arent an arab. One of my best friends dad ran their entire ministry of interior dev program (no one enters or leaves the country without him knowing about it) and after 40 years the day he retired he was told to get out, coz not arab. But really I wouldnt sit on my high horse without an understanding of the culture and mod op .. your dealing with read an ...article on a rando website and then cry slavery. That would be a dis service to people who actually do suffer from it. And I can find you plenty of cases of those.. They dont actually generate any value as a country for the most part. They just recycle petrodollars.
