It's not so easy for everyone.

Actually yes. Sometimes as long as two days in a row.
Bulking has always been a very difficult process for me. On the other hand, I've never even had to try to cut, only to cut slowly.

It actually is easy for everyone. You just don't know how or refuse to execute it. Start eating 1.5-2 lbs of meat every day with a heaping 200g of carbs in rice or potatoes and top it off with a pint or more of ice cream (make it 500g if you don't other meals). You will gain weight. I actually consider ice cream to be a super-anabolic dessert. Love eating it and it leads to huge gains.
It's that simple. It's not so easy? Are you doing the above? If not, you aren't doing it correctly.

Like I said, if I'm not forcing myself to eat, I'll forget to do it entirely.
Typically my meals are something like 6 eggs + 10 breakfast sausages + 1 cup hashbrowns for breakfast, a subway sub with double meat for lunch, and several servings of soup (.75-1.25 lbs of meat, 1.5 cup potatoes, various other veggies, beans, sometimes pasta) for dinner. Protein bar and/or nuts throughout the day. Lots and lots of milk. Occasional peanut butter and jelly sandwich (~3tbsp peanut butter) before bed.
I find ice cream disgusting.
It's not that I don't know how to bulk. Even "down" at ~183 as I am right now, I've still made over 50 lbs of 90% lean progress. It's just that it's been a very "two steps forward, one and a half steps back" deal for me, and it's an incredibly difficult and frustrating process to spend all day every day doing something that I don't like - stuffing my face with food until I feel sick. I broke 200 for the first time in my life two weeks ago, I'm down 15 lbs since. Oh well, next goal is 205 and hope I only "rebound" to 187.

What don't you like about ice cream? Do you like honey? The key to bulking is to find something dessert-like that you love to eat and then stuffing your face with it after the gym and after you already feel so full you can't eat anymore because you just ate 1.5 lbs of chicken or 1 and a half racks of ribs.
Side note: I don't like eggs for bulking. Eggs are too filling and not enough calories. I also just don't like the taste. It's hard to eat 6 of them every single morning. I prefer meat all day.

That's the problem though. I don't like eating. I'm not going to find something that I love to eat, just things that I dislike less. 90% of the time that I'm putting food into my mouth, I'm forcing myself to do it. The other 10%, I haven't eaten in days.
I don't really need any help with this though. I know exactly what I "should" be doing. I know all the things I'm supposed to do. And I do it. I force myself to do it. For weeks and months. I put on 10 or 15 or 20 pounds. And then I get sick, or I get busy, or I fall into this weird state where I'm otherwise ok, but just a single bite of food is enough to make me vomit for a week or two, and I lose 75ish% of that weight. And then I start again.
And that's how I went from 135 lbs to what I am now. at 6'4. Over four years. And I'm really ok with that.

Are you anhedonic or something?

Had to google that.
I just don't like eating. But this is usually the response I get if I bring that up, so... that's why I don't bring it up.

Ok, well I have a different issue when it comes to eating more. I am a (basically) full-time student. I am either forced to bring a sandwich every day or just eat the food at school which has about 1/3 of the calories that I need. I am not allowed to bring in drinks to the school, I can't really eat breakfast (I leave for school pretty early and the breakfast options have no calories or are just worse for me than not eating) and by the time I get home if I eat a snack then I'm just hindering myself for dinner (many nights I don't get home til 4:30 or later, and I usually try to eat dinner by 6:30).
In the morning I have a problem where I'm slightly nauseous until at least 30-45 minutes after I wake up and shower, and I very often just don't have time to make food in the morning. I get up at 5:30, usually finish showering, shaving, etc. by 6:00 and usually have to do homework or study for at least 30 minutes. This isn't counting the time that I have to get dressed, brush my teeth, or do random stuff around the house. If I was allowed to eat during class it would be different, but I'm barely allowed to drink water (got a water pass due to chronic migraines) and even then I'm supposed to limit myself to only what's necessary.

I probably shouldn't have said anything about my weight as I've a) not been trying b) I'm lucky to get two workouts in a week at the gym. Haven't been able to do anything heavy with the legs in a year but I've still maintained my weight even though my legs are definitely skinnier than they were. Plus buying all that food is expensive and also if you make food for other people they have to be ok with boring but bulking food. I'm sure you can find stuff but you have to work around a lot of factors.
Like you said, you just need to execute. We were commiserating but a kick in the pants is good

Fuck I love eating. The past few months I've been drinking too much and not really caring about what I ate. I went from ~175 to 195 pretty fast. I guess I'm getting older, because I'm finding it harder to drop this weight... down to about 184 this morning.
I swear to God I could gain 50 pounds in a month without problem if it wasn't so bad for my health.

Are you in high school? I honestly wouldn't worry about bulking until you are on your own in college and can eat unlimited quantities of dining hall food.
One option is to increase your intake of protein shakes. They go down easy if you are nauseous and you can take one after school but before dinner, because whey spikes your insulin and you will still be voracious 2 hours later when you eat a real meal.

I feel the same way about food as you. I try to enjoy it and find foods that I like but beyond the first couple bites, there is zero enjoyment. Luckily my meal sizes at the moment are still manageable (3kcal/day over 4 or 5 meals) so I don't have to force much down, though I'm assuming my tolerance for how much I can eat will increase as I put on weight. Eating is such a burden, I really wish there was a way to skip it. It doesn't help that I don't have much money to spend on food either so there is very little variety.

Try using more spices to add flavour to your food (think curry or jerk chicken). It's a pretty affordable way to add variety to your cooking

Havent done shit like this forever and i'm realizing my left side/arm is significantly stronger than my right for some reason ~~ I'm assuming it's from compensating for my fucked up right back/shoulder.

Everyone in my family is a "foodie" and I could give less of a shit lol. Eating is work for me. Nothing is going to change that either, all the women in my family are really good cooks and one is even a trained chef.
Funny thing is, a lot of the time my family will be like "BenKen will eat anything! He'll finish this..." because yes, I will. I would also eat the same thing 10x a week if I didn't live with my GF . Finishing a meal is about the same to me as doing mobility work. Eating is just something that I do to try and improve, not something that I look forward to or get excited about.

I understand eating simply as a chore, simply shoveling nutrients in your mouth. I do it many times a week. But I don't understand not ever enjoying eating. Don't you guys use sauces? Don't you guys like to eat desserts or savory snacks? Are you just generally depressed and anhedonic? Not enjoying food seems like a maladaptive trait. What are you guys actually eating? I hate eating plain chicken breasts too, that's why I don't just eat plain chicken breasts.
What if you guys fast for 12-16 hours before you eat? Doesn't being hungry make food taste good?

Why can't you just accept that not everyone is the same? Just like some people have trouble NOT eating only fat food and too much of it, there are people that are the opposite.
|
I can accept that everyone is not the same. I would be asking people who only eat "fat food and too much of it" slightly different questions. But people aren't just born eating "only fat food and too much of it" are they? It's heavily influenced by environment and also malleable through behavioral changes.
I just find it odd that so many people claim to not enjoy eating anything at all. It's possible that a lot of people are born this way and nothing can change that. It's also possible that a lot of those people don't really care that they don't enjoy food. But it seems likely that something could be done to enhance the experience if the root cause or circumstances were explored.
