We won from time to time a few cups or showed good results, but it was never impressive. We did watch to other countrys and saw their starplayers and their huge transfer fees. For me, I realized we were 2nd class in football.
In the year 2000 after a horrible Euro for Germany (out in the groupstage), the german football association (DFB) and the clubs forced an total system change with better Infrastructure, resulting in a better coaching and player education. Because we didn't have had the money for stars our young talents had the chance to compete in the Bundesliga and grow as players.
It's nearly impossible to say how important this Champions League Final for Germany is. There were many downs and not many ups in the last 15years. It feels like the german football did build this sucess with it's own hands. And it's sexy to watch. Yes. I used to dislike German football too but since 2006 they have become really fun to watch, but unfortunately so many people still remember "old" Germany and still hate them to this day. Not only in football :D But yeah, I agree. For many years Germany was this team that was good at headers, tackles, long distance shots and set-pieces. The players were disciplined and physically strong but the play was never technically inspiring. Somehow we always did quite well at World Championships with it but you could easily see that this would not go on for much longer. 1994 and 1998 we were crushed in the quarter finals by mid-tier opponents who just had a better team in that tournament. 2002 we reached the finals but that was pure luck of the draw. The DFB did many things right 13 years ago. In 2000 it was decided that the DFB and all clubs will pump a lot of money into youth support and infrastructure. Now we reap the rewards with players like Neuer, Khedira, Goetze, Reus, Mueller, Draxler, Gündogan, Özil and many others. Agree with almost everything above except 2002. That team was actually pretty good but no one seemed to realize it before the tournament. I for one thought they would do well. It was a great mixture of experience and young rising talent. A Ballack in his prime was the heart of it all. A lot of the players were simply on top form that year. Remember that many of them were Levekusen players who reached the CL finals that same year. .... Ballack was the only player with any flair on that team what youth ? Almost the entire actively playing was nearly 30. Of the top of my head.. uhh Klose and Frings would be mid 20's and Ballack early 20s. Everyone else was a warhorse on that team and they ground it out. Scraping past Paraguay, USA and SK not exactly stellar opposition :p So you forgot Bernd Schneider? But other than him and the ones you mentioned I agree that the team was nothing special. Also Klose was just starting his career and he got much better with age. and you forgot about metzelder which was an incredible young talent at that time

Yeah and also I never said youth. I said rising young talent. It was definitely rising talent, maybe not that young. And as for the opposition they faced, it's not Germany's fault Argentina, France and Italy (Italy at least made out of their group) went down so early. Spain too, though they weren't considered a real threat back then.
The present day Germany is obviously a lot better, no question. But that team didn't get the respect it deserved back in 2002 is all I'm saying.
Edit. look at Brazil's road to the championship: Belgium, England and Turkey! Now that's a pretty mediocre bunch of teams. Do they not deserve the cup?

Pandemona, Please don't put Benfica in Green
I'm still in shock with last saturday's game... So I don't think i'll enjoy this game as much as i could. I hope the players have recovered emotionally.

uhh ok. so where is the talent going to rise for a bunch of 30 year olds who retired a few years later.
the majority of the squad didnt make it to the next euros iirc.
O noes I forgot Medzelder. I guess I shouldve done my homework .. you could add another 2 players and it still doesnt really make it a mix.

ffs read the whole post and the ones before that. Ballack, Klose, Metzelder, Frings were rising to prominence. All Early/Mid twenties. Then there were the warhorses, many of whom had played really strong seasons. It's already been said several times that the team wasn't young on average. Quoting only parts that fit your argument is actually bannable on most forums. This is really off topic, sorry.

so is backseat moderating. Look that team wasnt particularly impressive on paper, theres a reason they performed better than expected.
Does it make them a great team ? No, the quality of play in their games was mediocrish at best. It doesnt take anything away from what they achieved but the team was not impressive to watch in anyway
Just like you wouldnt call the greek team that won the euros an impressive team. Hell Turkey played better football than they did that world cup.]

On a more serious note, I want Cardozo to have the game of his life today.

Yea said it was an under rated team. It wasnt, it was a mediocre team that did better than expected because even relatively poor teams can out perform.
If you wanted to stop you wouldve stopped.
