As much as I love RDM and he is a hero of mine, I also like Rafa. Along with Martinez they are both nice guys and I enjoy when they turn up in the Sky TV show that discusses the Spanish league.

You don't have the horror of him being your last line of defence, you give him some licence to attack (which he takes anyway even if in CB position...oh the horror), and you add some physical size which you lose if you put Azpi on the right -> Ivan in CB and leave Luiz out. I agree with Luiz playing in the middle aswell. His skill set is so much more valuable there.

I think Mou's a legend but if he has a weakness it's his tactical side. He is more of a motivator and leader than a tactician. I think his tactics get figured out quicker than some other top managers. One shouldn't be confused though: Mou puts such a large amount of time into studying the opposition players and learning their personal weaknesses and strengths, his 'man tactical awareness' is incredible, but I think his overall strategic awareness is fairly weak. He is great at focusing on components and making them as good as they can be but I'm not convinced he can, for example, invent new tactical solutions to general problems.

I dont know if thats a weakness. I think I've said this before and this is pretty much what your saying. He doesnt have any tactics as such. When he plays weaker opposition he knows his team is better than he tends to leave them with a pretty basic game plan of go play better and win. Stronger opposition he takes on a game by game basis. His ability isnt strategic brilliance, its execution. He drills his teams to play the way they need to play that he believes will have the best chance of winning. He doesnt bring any "new" strategy or style to the table. He just picks the best one for the situation. Not all teams take well to that especially star filled teams because alot of the time the methods are incredibly pragmatic even cynical. Their is a fair bit of science involved in that method though and getting teams to take his methods in stride and then do it well, especially talented teams takes alot of managerial ability. Motivation and mind games aside. My main issue is that once he achieves a certain level he thinks hes done his job and thats that. Hes like an energy drink. When the crash starts coming he starts making those oft quoted contradictions. "The loss is on me because I am the coach, but the players are sucking." or something to that effect. Ofcourse Im paraphrasing but you get the point. Still winning is winning however you do it.

Then he gets transferred to Liverpool and they make a documentary about him and his season with the Reds. And it immediately emerges that he's just a standard UK manager...down to earth, almost straightforward...not some cultured tactician that people might have believed lol. And he's having a rough time with Liverpool. THe team has a bunch of 'good' players but it really doesn't click and there are some HORRIBLE weak links, plus a lack of people who can 'put the team on their back'. Most of the time if Suarez has a bad day, Liverpool has a bad day. Guardiola has never been tested outside Barcelona either. There are very few managers who have repeated impressive things at more than one club. Van Gaal is the only one who comes to my mind at once.

Mourinho, Hitzfeld, Rehhagel, Benitez - all of them were very successful at more than one club
