Race today was pretty fun, though not what I had expected. Given the races so far I expected a fairly normal road course...but was confronted with a pretty legit XC type course. First and last 600m or so were on flat pavement, but the rest was up and down hills on a trail. Pretty churned up dirt, hilly, and with a good bit of snow and ice...even had two stream crossings (which is a bit chilly on a 25 degree morn ). The hills weren't really insane, at least by Colorado standards, but noticeable. Let's just say I had alot of fun with that change in variety and constantly having to be aware and thinking.

The time wasn't fast (I think mid to high 20's...still no results though ) but I'm very pleased with the race. I was a little conservative at the beginning 1k, but ratcheted it down and really ran tough the rest of the way, avoiding the fade I tend to exhibit in the 3rd and 4th k of the race. Still left a little in the tank, and need to remember I can start full on kicking sooner than 60m from the finish...but overall I'm very pleased with the way I ran.

Good improvement too, as I ran probably 30s slower on a basically flat course 5 weeks ago. Confident I can go sub 20 under good conditions. Guess my next race/goal is the trail 2M Nielson challenge in early January. Optimistically hoping for 12:30, which could be a stretch as the course doesn't run especially fast. I can run a road 5k at a marginally faster pace than I can hold for the 2M

I think it's Asics Gel Frantic or something of the like. Nothing special, just something you can pick up for $50 a Kohl's. It's a little more lightweight than what I wear for most training runs.

This Crossrace sounds like a lot of fun particularly if you don't have any pressure to perform. I'd like to try one, too but there aren't any in my area afaik.

I have some problems with my hip joint since last week. It's hard to describe even in my native language. It started to be an issue last tuesday, my left foot and leg felt kinda weak without having any pain the longer I ran. I finished the run anyways and didn't have any issues right after the run but had this pain in the hip joint the next morning.
So I forced myself to rest for four days and tried to run again yesterday at a really slow pace. Everything felt fine but again at the end of the run my leg felt tired without real pain. When I woke up today I had the same pain like last week. It got better through the day but it sucks anyways.
It's most likely an effect of too much training. I picked up the weekly mileage four weeks ago (it's not more than before my halfmarathon in october though) and I ran a lot faster than usually because it felt so easy running at a faster pace suddenly and was a lot of fun. I guess the increase of distance and pace at the same time was too much for my hip or whatever is causing this.
I have to make an appointment with an orthopedist and be really careful with running until I get one (which could be in three months). Fuck.

I agree with the "fuck" part. Hip injuries are a real bitch. Not only are they incredibly difficult to diagnose (all kinds of things refer pain to different areas (i.e. a back issue can cause pain in the hip). Hopefully you are lucky, and it is just a sprain or tendinitis in one of the groin or hip flexor muscles. The other possibilities are generally....shitty. Like 6, 9, 12+ months out with surgery possibly required.

All I can say is be really, really careful. I'm living proof of that. I'm pretty sure if I would have just stayed totally off for a few months I'd be back, instead I'm 13 months out...and healing at a glacial pace (at least it DOES seem to be getting better).

Anything else you can tell us about the pain (where does it hurt, does it seem to come from "inside" the hip joint", can you trigger the pain with any specific movements, etc) is helpful into getting some idea of what might be the culprit.

Another nice workout today of 8x600 going 2:15 for the 600s, and 2min jog recovery between. Last one in maybe 2:10. Nice turnover/light VO2 max stuff without being particularly difficult.

Sorry for not responding for so long. I kinda forgot about it.

Ok, the pain got triggered when I started a forward/upward movement. It started right at the moment when I put pressure on the leg and I felt in inside the joint. I also felt the joint snapping a little. I can't quite remember it actually as the issue slowly faded away over the day and I didn't run the whole week.
I did run jog yesterday however. It was a short and easy 6k with my friend. I don't have any hip issues now and the run was really smooth. But at some point at around 25 minutes I felt a sudden pain in my left knee, in my ankle and my foot. I immediately slowed down even more and the pain faded away again.
What I know now is that I have some issue with my left leg. I just don't know what the issue is as I have symptoms everywhere. For now I'm planning to rest a lot and maybe go for short and easy runs twice a week.

Nice cruisin 3.5M tempo today in 23:45 today, so just under 6:50 pace on a nice rolly trail. Fitness is definitely on it's way back, as that was really relaxed. Certainly could have cruised another 2-3+ miles like that without getting near the territory of "working hard".

Going to work hard on hip strengthening and rehab stuff for the next month or so, and if I keep tolerating 2x runs per week, am going to try to work back up to 25-30 mpw. My concern is that I definitely still feel trigger that deep ache with a certain movement, and still feel a little of that sensation after some runs...though while running it feels totally fine. It is a possibility that I've gotten so used to looking for it I just have a phantom pain, or think of normal sensations as abornmal.

Everyone dead here lately

Had a nice session today of 10x400 w/2:00 jog recoveries. Went 88,86, 86, 85, 85, 83, 84, 83, 82, 69. Just a nice workout for gettin some turnover without being too stressful.

I moved and decided that being fat again is easier than running. I need to get back into it soon, after losing the 60 lbs and getting back into it I'm back up 20 lbs again

I'll get back into it eventually, it's just too easy to slip in the holiday season. Nice work on staying dedicated though. Great workout.

Ok, I know it's just a running thread, but I'll say this much.

I attempted and finished my first Ironman 4 months ago in Louisville. I didn't set any records on the marathon (hah!), but I finished, and I've been ecstatic about it ever since. It hardly feels like 4 months have passed. My body and mind have never revolted together for so long before.

It's been hard to train since then. I've only had the will to run a few miles here and there. I haven't swam a lap or biked a mile at all. I really wanted to hit the running hard this Christmas season since I work at a University and I get a lot of vacation time but instead, I've been moaning on the couch for days with the flu. Oh well.

There's a 5k mud run coming up in March and while I'm usually not too into those, since I'm more competitive with running than I am "just have fun," I'm designing the course so I'm definitely going to run it :p

Oh, and btw, my shoe of choice lately, that I've done an 8-mile mud run in (Super Spartan), almost all my training of 100s of miles, and the entirety of the marathon portion of the Ironman, is the Saucony Shay xc2. It's my dream shoe. If they go on sale again for 30 bucks, I'm going to buy a half dozen. I was crazy surprised how long they last. I've got to be around 600 or so miles on this pair that I'm still wearing. But you'll need good form. If you drag your feet, no shoe will last you that long. Just make sure that if you take a gamble on these that you don't get the spike version. They're intended for track and small feet. I'm super flat-footed and weigh about 165-175 depending on the season though so they're fairly forgiving.

Cheers

Thats rough man, 20 pounds is a decent bit. You were making some pretty sick progress though, and it's not like fitness vanishes overnight. Once you lose the weight again you'll be right back in the game

Thanks! Been nailing it so far this holiday season, down about 10 pounds in the last month and a half. Pretty much just said on holidays I can eat as much as I want (even if that is 2000+ surplus kcal), and then the day after eating roughly neutral. Rest of the time has been clean eating.

Really awesome stuff man! An ironman is no joke, and is definitely an accomplishment just to finish one. It's one of those things that while I know with training I could do one fine, the thought of running a frickin MARATHON after biking 112 miles and swimming for an hour+ is just like...hell no, no way!

So you are RDing, or at least designing the course of your own mud run? Pretty cool stuff. If you want it to have a competitive feel, just set it up like a good tough, muddy XC course, without going into the realm of gimmicks.

I'm the worst when it comes to shoes...I don't really replace them. Usually get about 1500-2000 miles on em before they start literally falling apart. Probably not the best habit, but never really had any injuries (well aside from this BS hip/groin stuff) so just kept doing it

@ berated-: Just get out there and run. The first few runs will be awful but you're going to back into your previous shape in no time.
You moved recently? Time to explore your neighbourhood via running. Find a nice 5k or 10k race in the next three months and prepare for it if you need longterm motivation.

There's a nice 10k race at New Year's Eve. I'd really like to participate but I gained 2kg over christmas and I think I lost my PR shape thanks to my hip issues. I don't want to risk a more serious injury either. My hip is fine again but I'm not running more than 30k at an easy pace per week at the moment. I'd totally run a sub 45:00 without the hip "injury".

Anyone here has chondromalascia patella? I've been diagnosed with it and it's getting very uncomfortable in the last few weeks. Any stretching or exercises that I can do that will help with it?

I think generally it's just rest, and then once the pain is gone gradual reintroduction of running while focusing on hip and leg strengthening.

Hey, thanks for the encouragement.

I'm not RD'ing, just designing. It's supposed to be a fairly big event. It wasn't my idea, though, and it'll be more than just a cross country-esque course. It will have all kinds of crazy obstacles... which is why it's costing so much to build, hah. I'm going to keep it classy though. No dumb electrodes like 'tough mudder' or ice baths like 'warrior dash.' Ok, maybe an ice bath, haven't decided yet.

So, it will only be a 5k, but I don't expect anyone to cross the line within 35 mins.

About shoes, well, I'm the worst about logging my training. I usually know by how it's going as to what I need to do the next week. I don't follow a plan and I coach myself so I pay attention to my improvement and injuries more than anything. That said, I usually have no idea how many miles I have on my shoes. I just have to guess. I usually make them last multiple seasons though. They look pretty rough when I'm done with 'em. hah

Good call. I guess they haven't had major issues, but I just think it's a really dumb idea to mix running and electricity together. That's asking for a serious heart issue.

So, it will only be a 5k, but I don't expect anyone to cross the line within 35 mins.

What, are you gonna have obstacles that take like 5 minuter per obstacle to do?

Barring something like that, I don't care what you do to the course you aren't going to slow runners down by more than 30-60s a mile...so the good runners should still be knocking out 18 or better.

This is exactly me. I have the same thoughts.

On the positive note, I am officially beginning my comeback. I've survived the occasional run and race without problems. General plan is very gradual return. Probably about 15 mpw this month, increasing by maybe 10 each month.

If I get to 40 or so by late May and am still pain free, I evaluate the gameplan from there.

Very exciting...even if my fitness is way off what it was.
