Anyone know a calorie calculator of sorts so that I can figure out how many calories I can eat and still lose weight? I know that I need a minimum of around 1600 calories for my body to function (I'm a small guy). I jog a relaxing 14 - 18 miles at 12min/mile a week and do sprinting right after each session. Before the cardio I do the standard array of weight lifting for different groups of muscles with rest days and all.

The reason I ask is because before I was eating around 1600 cal a day with a really bad workout routine and losing weight at a very slow rate. Now I go to the gym and lift A LOT more weights and still do my cardio, so I find myself feeling pretty hungry with 1500 - 1600 calories of food going into the night... I just don't know how many calories I'm losing when do weight lifting and recovering so I don't know exactly how many more calories I can eat and feel comfortable @_@

It's not so much as the amount of calories you take in, but rather the quality of those calories. It's better to make 2k on good food than make 1600 on bad food. And honestly doing weightlifting with a 1600 calorie diet sounds like a good way to kill yourself to me. In short, don't really pay attention to the amount of calories, just make sure you eat alot of good food that supports your training schedule. Starving yourself is not a good way to lose weight. And sorry but I don't know of any calorie calculator personally.

Hmm... I don't know about this advice. I've been under the impression that quantity is more important than quality when it comes to losing weight to a certain point. As in, 1800 "shitty" calories will help you lose more than 2000 "quality" calories (you seem to be implying the opposite)

I am saying the opposite, and when it comes to the fastest way of losing weight eating less comes down to being faster. (in almost all cases). But then again, it's not really a good thing to near starve yourself while working out. So while you might lose weight a little slower with a more 'good' calorie diet, you'll end up being much healthier. I guess it just comes down to what your goals are.

I guess you've got a good point there about being healthier. I've fixed my eating habits a long time ago (eating chicken lots of veggies, sacrificed rice although I'm Asian...) so the nutrients is not much of an issue anymore its just the amount that I'm eating. I just really hate my belly and chest fat which is why I wanted to eat less... but going hungry sucks. But if 1800 or 2000 calories will be ok to have daily (which sounds like 1 protein shake) then that should make life easier.

I'm pretty sure I burn around 400 calories in a workout (just a safe modest estimate), and a litte after. I just wish I had a more specific number so I don't feel guilty when I go for that extra snack to make myself feel not hungry. Jeez I sound like I have an eating problem lol.

Just follow the diet and training schedule you have now and see how it works out. If you arent losing weight or not fast enough, rather than cutting calories, just up your training. Thats the best advice i can give you, im no professional though. Also make sure your diet supports your exercise, generally eat carbs before training, and a good amount of protein. Cant give you any concise numbers on that though, im not really the best person to give advice on that. Anyways good luck with your weight loss endeavours, keep us posted.

First make sure you don't cheat. I know I am inclined to do that. I really have to go to bed early or I end up eating something. So then I ly in my bed hungry and can't fall to sleep. It isn't easy.

If you cyclinge 60 km twice a week that will burn tons of additional calories but not strain you a lot. Maybe you have to work up to the fitness this required first. Also, it takes a lot of time to do this. But with nice weather it is nice to do.
A good workout will burn 500 kcal an hour. (that number does seem a bit high, especially if you aren't very tall/have a smaller body) Of course more moderate cycling won't. But you can see you can easily burn more than 1000 kcal when cycling long distances. Of course the higher the pace or climbing hills and thus having a higher heart rate will burn more. But the cheat is that you can cycle all day at low HR without having to have any fitness conditioning to do this. Sure you will have sore mucles the next few days for a few times but that's ok.

Eating less works. But if you eat 1000 kcal a day too much, it is hard to just cut out that 1000 kcal and be fine. It may be easier to cut back to 500 kcal surplus. Then your workout does 400 kcal or so. But then you still have 100 kcal surplus if you work out every day, which you probably don't. So if you can burn 1000 kcal additional calories by cycling for hours, that works very well.
If you don't like cycling at all it's a bit of a problem. Also, maybe someone who never really cycled distances they may struggle a lot more than I think they will. So maybe I am wrong that people without any prior cycling and just go and be fine cycling for 30 or 40k at a tourist pace.

I work a job that I bring my own lunch. I can't refrigerate it, just put it in a lunchbox and be on my way. I'd like to do something more paleo than a sandwich. I generally bring fruit/almonds/carrots or something like that as well, but I can't feel good about eating white bread. Any suggestions?

Answering your question, I use this calculator IF Calculator
Obviously you don't need to be on any intermittent fasting schedule to use it.

Find your maintenance. Go from there. if you need anymore help/have more questions, just (preferably) post here again or PM me and I can try and help you out more

You could bring a few different things, as long as you don't mind them being cold. I just cooked an entire pork loin the other day. Cut it up, put it in the lunch box and be on your way. This would probably work for a lot of things... from stew, to chicken, to really any meat.

You can use this recipe to make a paleo...salad? I don't really know what it is. it does include cheese though, so if you aren't cool with that, then I have no idea what to replace it with. It'll still taste good on it's own.

Anyways;
Carrots. Cut these up, put them in a pan. Place lid over pan.
Broccoli. Cut these things up too. Place them in pan a little bit after the carrots.
Peppers. I mean the hot kind. Cut a half of one and place into the pan when it is almost done.
Spinach. That's right mofo. Spinach. Put it in the pan near the end, when the carrots and broccoli are ALMOST too tender.
Cheese. Put about 3-4 slices of cheese in the pan. Right after the spinach. Wait until it semi melts, turn off the heat, and put into a bowl/container. It'll continue to melt from the heat.

Obviously, after every ingredient you put in, you want the lid to go back on. You can add some water so stuff doesn't get burnt, but I never found it necessary. It is also possible to add whatever ingredient you want, really. I found it best with spinach compared to say, lettuce. But to each his own. This stuff really rocks, I cook it all the time.

All right, thanks. That actually sounds pretty good. I don't think a salad would be the best idea, because it's not the biggest lunchbox and it's a pretty demanding job so I need a decent bit of food. But that's still a great recipe for any other time, and I'm sure the pork loin, etc would work great.

Beef jerky came to mind. Which reminded me of backpacking food.

http://www.paleoplan.com/2011/03-23/backpacking-paleo/ This was the first thing that came up but that might help your search as no refrigeration is a prereq for backpacking food

That's really good too. I'm kind of leery of using protein bars but they're really easy, maybe I'll just try that with some fruit/nuts/jerky.

I've heard cayenne spice and others are supposed to. I'm not a pro at this stuff but this is what I could find on Google Scholar:
http://www.ajcn.org/content/84/1/63.short
http://chemse.oxfordjournals.org/content/37/2/103.abstract

And jackpot: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16580033

I'm only going off abstracts so dive in if you want more details
