Eliminate refined carbohydrates and all liquid calories.

Eat 'til you are satisfied -- not 'til you are full. Eat slow so you fill up faster.

I think the calories are more in the olive oil than in the lemon juice.
That's the 2nd time in a week I've seen someone sig a quote from this GD and I have never witnessed a sig quote happen in my TL history ever before. -Najda

Refined carbohydrates = processed foods with lots of carbs + liquid kcals = soda, candy, bread, cereal, pasta, juices, etc.

Eat til satisified not til full is pretty clear I guess

Make sure you cook it thoroughly! It is known to be a goitrogen in large amounts.

How much is 'large amounts' and how serious is it? I usually eat a third of a cauliflower (raw) and you can't really cook something like strawberries.

Not very. I'd be more concerned about the raw cauliflower, but if you're healthy and get enough iodine it's probably not an issue.

If you're eating cauliflower raw everyday and start to notice weird thyroid symptoms (can vary wildly), that might be it. Also you might want to consider using iodized salt or supplementing iodine if you don't eat a lot of processed foods, which are high in salt/iodine.

Broccoli and cauliflower contain natural aromatase inhibitors. Aromatase is the enzyme responsible for converting (aromatising) testosterone into estrogen. Mushrooms are also a healthy source of aromatase inhibitors, although you may want to cook them before eating.

There's a debate on whether soy acts as a weak agonist for estrogen receptors and thus it inhibits the effect of endogenous estradiol or it increases the overall exposure of the body to estrogen, hence increasing the effects of estrogen.

Strawberries are also goitrogens, meaning they can inhibit thyroid function, further inhibiting your ability to lose fat. Soy is also a goitrogen. Coconut oil, on the other hand, enhances thyroid function.

Good points affinity. I would definitely stay away from soy for those and other reasons (GMO, etc. etc.).

So i'm in a little bit of a bind. i'm looking to eat healthier but i don't have a lot of options. i'm in the military and i live in a barracks, so the chow hall supplies me food. i do not have to eat there, but whether i eat there or not i am charged for the food. the reason i don't eat there is because there is literally like a 1 in 15 chance i'll get food poisoning if i eat there. i've gotten it like 5 times in the last half a year, and i rarely eat there. the food there is pretty shitty anyways. since i live in the barracks, i don't have access to any sort of kitchen, with the exception of the microwave and fridge i have in my room. so... any recommendations on what i could eat? i also want to keep it cheap since i'm poor.

Will your unit spaz out if you buy an electric hot plate or a single electric stove type burner from the PX? I used to keep one of those in my room, so I could make eggs or whatever else easy. Buy one cheap pan, one cheap pot, and you can cook just about anything with a little ingenuity. Make sure your direct NCO won't flip about it first, since they're responsible for inspections and the like. Last thing you want is to get in trouble for violating some archaic, draconian reg that nobody knew was on the books.

Also, if you're in the bricks, I know they take your BAS right back out of your check, but you should also have no bills, unless they're self inflicted, or you're under family sep pay circumstances, which would also help offset the cost some.

Hey guys. As an asian, I eat a lot of rice and I know its a bunch of carbs. Anyone know a good substitute for rice as I tend to eat it for lunch and dinner everyday. I need to cut down on the calories and I know I'm getting way too many from my intake of rice.

Also, can anyone give me a good estimate of how many grams of protein are in chicken leg quarters like the ones in the recipe on this link: http://www.sauceandsensibility.com/?p=1500

Probably not the best, a lot of Paleo stuff says not to, but it's so easy for calories I'm not sure I would give it up.

Try eating less rice with the meal? Like smaller portions. Simplest solution really, you're not going to find something that is similar to rice that isn't a carbohydrate. It is hard to eat some stuff without the rice though TT

Hi guys
I've been swimming and doing some cardio to lose weight. I just read here now that its better to start weightlifting than do cardio. Any good ways of doing effective stregth training? Like situps / pushups / squats? I won't have heavy weights avalibale from next month. So I'll give it a good try with heavy weights first. Also I'm afraid to start out to heavy so that I get injured. Any good tips/procations on how to stay effective yet not get injured? Thanks

Check out www.stronglifts.com , follow the program, start with the barbell and work up from there. This is good if you don't have any weightlifting experience. If you get the chance you can post videos of your form if you want critique. Best way to make improvements without risking injury.

Also, in before wall from Daigomi :D just teasing I love your posts!

Losing weight is primarily about nutrition. Stay on that calorie deficit.

Exercise of course helps creating a deficit. It doesn't matter much if you do lifting or cardio or both; as long as you stay on a calorie deficit you will lose weight. Lifting has the nice side effect of building muscle. In the end you should do what kind of exercise you like most, and focus on nutrition for weight loss.

What kind of cardio have you been doing? What exercise / intensity / frequency, etc?

I used swim about 500m - 1000m and sometimes more about 3-4 times week. Didnt have a spesific repetition. Though lately I've started swimming qucker 100m as many as I can with small breaks. I used to eat less and count calories, though the problem was that I gained that weight quite fast when i started eating unhealthy and exericing less. Muscles help to keep the kalorie need high right, so if I gain a solid amount of muscle, even if I start eating more than normal I wont gain loads? from the start of february until mid april I lost 7 kg, and then gained it quite fast. I'm trying to find a good and effective way to loose weight and maintain it. I'm sick of gaining it again. Nutrition isnt a problem. I usually eat wholegrain breads, cheese, meat, chicken, eggs sallads, almonds etc try focus on protein and fat and low carb.
